9 James Bay - Hold Back the River - 10-4-4-4-9-11-17-21-29-36-40-30-10-1-5-11-13-15-14-16-20-25-36-X-34-35-X (25 non-consecutive weeks)

I'd been anticipating James Bay's new material for a good 8 months or so by the time I heard this song. As I said already, I saw him live supporting Tom Odell in February 2014. When I first heard Hold Back the River, I really enjoyed it and it went straight to the top 10 in my chart. It was a top 20 hit in the UK at the time and I was delighted that he'd managed to do that well - never did I expect him to get even higher months later and eventually peak at an incredible high of #2! The song is an acoustic track, and part of what I love is the light and shade throughout. James' vocals are quiet and soft at the beginning, before eventually building to the incredible final chorus and outro - "lonely water, lonely water, won't you let us wander, let us hold each other". It really was a remarkable single to push as his breakthrough and it eventually achieved a well-deserved #1 spot in my weekly chart. It had a steep fall only due to four new entries appearing the following week, from Cody Simpson, Ulrik Munther, Carly Rae Jepsen and Conor Maynard. This song has, however, outlasted them all. This song remains his best for me and is well deserving of being both top 10 EOY in this chart and the official UK one

8 Troye Sivan - WILD - 35-1-1-3-2-4-6-7-14-19-24-23-28-… (13+ weeks)

When I listened to this song upon release, I didn't have sky-high expectations really. I'd listened to Troye's TRXYE EP and I liked it but didn't love it at the time, and I listened to the WILD EP hoping it'd be slightly better. The whole thing underwhelmed me at first (obviously grew on me hugely as those songs, and the album, have kinda dominated these past couple of months), but the title track really stood out. WILD feels like a breath of fresh air on the pop scene. The song is about love, and how someone just drives you wild when you think about them. It's one of his more uplifting songs for sure, and the video is a really brilliant love story. Shame it's kinda ruined in that sense in the follow-up videos (part 2, FOOLS, continues directly) The song became Troye's first #1 in my chart and started his domination of my affections, and months later it's going stronger than ever. Troye is a shining star and this really should've been his breakthrough hit but alas, it wasn't meant to be :(

7 Luke Friend - Hole in My Heart - 1-1-2-6-7-7-6-4-3-5-1-4-6-9-13-15-19-26-30-34-38-X (21 weeks)

Potentially my most anticipated song of 2015 now! Luke Friend was my favourite by a mile in The X Factor series 10 (2013), and to see him come as high as third in that was a joy, and quite unexpected actually. I'd been waiting for his first single for a long time and it finally premiered in early 2015 (after teaser track Take on the World in late 2014). I heard this song live twice before it actually premiered and the studio version definitely lived up to those live teasers. Hole in My Heart is an acoustic track which allows Luke's unique voice to shine through, and of course it shot to #1 in my chart straight away. I had hopes that it could be a chart hit but radio annoyingly ignored it, meaning it had to rely on Luke's fanbase and any promo he could get. I was eagerly anticipating each Kworb update on its release week, praying it would hold up well enough to overcome a huge streaming deficit. When it charted at #40, I was ecstatic. I knew deep down that the record label probably wanted more, but to hear Luke being played on the chart show was a big moment and I was over the moon. I think my reaction in the chart show thread was just a sea of exclamation marks :') Luke's sadly not followed this up since, but I've had the pleasure of hearing it live two more times and it really was a special moment to hear everyone singing it at Luke's first headline tour last April. I know Luke's signed to a new label now and is planning to release an album but whether that happens or not is another matter. I can live in hope I guess.

Just went to embed the YouTube video to find it's been deleted from Vevo. Ugh. Thankfully, Luke himself has re-uploaded it.

If only streaming hadn't been included in the chart then things could have been different for Luke Friend. Shame.

Indeed :( He'd have had a top 30 hit which is slightly better of course! He did remarkably well for someone with no radio support so good for him.

Thanks Mack :D

6 Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean? - 1-1-2-2-4-6-8-11-10-17-21-15-18-25-… (14+ weeks)

Justin Bieber delivered the comeback of the year with smash hit What Do You Mean? at the tail end of August last year. The song features a notably dancier sound from Justin, influenced heavily by Where Are Ü Now of course, and it's led to this being the biggest hit of his career so far, giving him his first UK #1 and a million chart-seller. In my chart, it also shot to #1, but that was more expected as Justin's had a huge hit rate in my chart, with three previous #1s (Boyfriend, Turn To You and As Long As You Love Me). It was, however, a notable improvement on the success, or general lack thereof, of the Journals era. The highest any song got was #2 in that era, with All That Matters getting the highest peaker, and All Bad peaking at a lowpoint of #40. What Do You Mean? was a song I was anticipating but due to the ropier Journals era, I was slightly sceptical about how good it would be. A leaked preview got my hype really going though and I loved the song on first listen, and it's definitely among his best!

Still to come in the top 5:

Benjamin - Young and Restless

Conrad Sewell - Hold Me Up

Iggy Azalea - Trouble (feat. Jennifer Hudson)

Justin Bieber - Sorry

One Direction - Drag Me Down

Any predictions?

What Do You Mean? missing the top 5? Flop fan

Fabulous to see Eyes Shut top 10 <3 I expected Hold Back The River to be even higher :o

WILD <33333333333v33333v3333 A lovely write up for it too, it's the song that got me into him also~ (and the rest was history )

This is going much better than I thought it would be Lol. Bring on ha top 5 ~

5 Justin Bieber - Sorry - 1-2-4-3-5-6-… (6+ weeks)

From one Justin song to another! Justin doesn't manage to gain his first EOY #1 in 2015 but two showings in the top 10 is highly impressive. I first heard Sorry the night before it was released, when it got its premiere on Capital FM. I rarely ever hear songs premiering on the radio but I decided to listen in for this song and boy, it didn't disappoint. It works well alongside What Do You Mean? but shows a different dance sound for Justin, being less subtle than the preceding single. It worked so well though and of course it shot to #1 in my chart after just 24 hours. I remember listening to it lots while I waited to see Justin pre-record his TFI Friday performance the morning after the premiere, it was on repeat basically and I loved it. Seeing Justin up close was amazing too, I'd seen him live before but I was like ONE METRE away. Craaaazy. Probably should've said this in the WDYM? commentary as that's what he performed but oh well :heehee: Everyone was shouting for him to do Sorry too but alas, it didn't happen. Lots of love for Sorry anyway and I'm so glad it's been a HUGE hit for him

4 Iggy Azalea - Trouble (feat. Jennifer Hudson) - 4-3-7-12-18-28-37-X-6-12-16-17-8-2-3-1-4-4-5-8-11-13-15-19-26-24-28-28-31-31-34-36-39-38-X (33 non-consecutive weeks)

Oops, sorry Ultra! The #1 at the mid-year stage slips to #4 come year-end, but Iggy's done remarkably well, placing a song in my EOY top 5 for three years running now! Work came 4th in 2013, Fancy topped the list in 2014 and now we have Trouble in 4th place for 2015. Trouble is summed up by one word - SASS. Jennifer Hudson's insane voice brings so much attitude to the track, it's impossible for me not to sing along. Iggy's raps are also great, and it's nice to hear a lighter more carefree song from her compared to other hits she's had as a lead artist. J-Hud really takes the lead on this song though with the infectious chorus and incredible middle 8. The song was an instant highlight for me when I listened to Iggy's Reclassified album, and it charted in my top 3 on that alone. It re-entered with the single hype and became a #1 eventually - Iggy's sixth (following Work, Change Your Life, Fancy, Problem and Black Widow, with Pretty Girls making it to seven later on). It's my second favourite Iggy track after Fancy and it's still a huge jam to this day, I'm really glad it was a UK hit too!

We're now left with an all-male top 3, which is a first for my EOY! 2012 and 2014 both had two female songs and one male song each, with 2013 being the reverse (and both male songs were Ulrik). Eagle-eyed viewers will realise that Trouble is actually the only female-led song in the top 11, and one of only four in the top 20! The other female-led songs were Wings, Doing It and Do It Again.

Sorry What Do You Mean missed the top 5

Hole In My Heart not 2 bad tbf!

I weep for your taste x

Some great songs here. Glad Sorry has done well. I liked What Do You Mean at first but upon getting Sorry I never go back to it, because I feel it's just so inferior to it.

Wild is amazing of course. I remember us listening to the album first time through the critic stream and I instantly loved it.

I also remember discussing Trouble's incredible Carpool boost as it was happening !

3 Benjamin - Young and Restless - 25-2-2-2-3-1-4-5-8-12-15-19-16-24-24-24-31-35-40-X (19 weeks)

I imagine this song will be fairly unknown to you all unless you participate in BJSC of course, but I hope some of you either read this or have a listen to the song and make a discovery! I discovered Young and Restless when browsing a blog, and I took a listen out of curiosity. I thought it was pretty great on one listen and downloaded it. This was on a Thursday, a day before I type up my chart, so it entered at #25 that Friday after just one day of impact, pretty good for an artist that was totally new to me at the time! It soared up to #2 behind Delta Goodrem's Wings the following week, and got stuck behind One Direction's Drag Me Down for the two weeks that followed. It eventually made the #1 spot it truly deserved and has been one of the biggest hits in my chart this year.

The song is uptempo and incredibly anthemic. It feels arena-ready, which is actually kinda sad because Benjamin is almost entirely unknown and most certainly won't be playing it to sold out arenas at any point. This was Benjamin's third single, following Underdogs and Unbreakable, but the first one I heard and therefore the first to impact my chart. I considered sending it to BJSC but ultimately I decided against it, sending Wølffe's Shoot You Down instead, thinking this would flop and that would smash. Wølffe ended up finishing at like #30, and this came 15th when Martyn sent it. Why did I pass? :drama: It finishes higher in my EOY than all bar one of my own BJSC entries this year, only Conrad is left.

Benjamin has shown himself to be a rising star in my books and it's a shame he's gone mostly unnoticed in the world of music (doesn't help when he's only being pushed in his home country of Finland). Young and Restless is a perfect pop song, should be right up any pop lover's street, and I'm so glad I was able to discover this song, as it continues to light up my mood every time I hear it.

Next up is my #1 artist of the year! Any guesses?
