Commentary

Easily the best tech house song of the year, 'Chunky' is super repetitive but when the song's less than 3 minutes long that's not a bad thing at all (it took me a while to get used to the 6 minute version but once the edit came it quickly rose in my chart). Love the bassline and cowbells in this particularly and the vocals are fun too.

Commentary

After I actively hated The Weeknd's "Earned It" I wasn't expecting much of his future material. But 'The Hills' is in my Hot 50 of the year so obviously I like this a lot. Great lyrics, great beat, great song.

Commentary

Mark Ronson had been gone for a long time (he was last seen in my EOY thread with 'Bang Bang Bang' back in 2010!) and though I wasn't really hyped for his comeback this song definitely made a good impression on me, and it's easy to see why this got so massive worldwide, being the biggest hit single of the year in the UK, US and probably multiple other places. It does a great job of being a 70s throwback but sounds so current, and it's full of hooks everywhere. Plus Bruno Mars doesn't actually annoy me in this song like he does in so many of his own so that itself deserves some praise.

Commentary

The second and final appearance for Y&Y in the Hot 100 is of course their biggest hit to date, 'King'. It's really dancetastic which I love from them and the production is great for a dancepop song. They really have brought something different to the table in the UK scene, who else could get the genre forum mods to spend ages deciding whether they belong in dance or indie? *.* (I was pushing for dance but now after hearing the album feel indie is the best place for them (and that is where they are)) and it's great to see them having become such a big name this year.

Commentary

Well this is a bop and a half. I do love the British accents on an otherwise very American sounding track, and K&K (fortunately for the abbreviation there's only two of them) drop some great barz. Also this has to be one of Mustard's best beats to date, and Jeremih's parts are really good too.

Commentary

Avicii is here again with the first of six entries in the top 50, all of which are #1s. Yep he has kinda dominated the year. This one sounds very different for Avicii anyway, incorporating trap and reggae influences and having a different tempo to his usual efforts. Of course he does it really well though but ultimately it's not an Avicii classic so it just misses the EOY top 40.

Commentary

Galantis are here with their only entry in the Hot 100 and also their only song that I can find who actually sings the vocals to it (thanks wikipedia :magic:). It was great seeing this become an actual smash in the UK anyway as I did like it when it was in BJSC but it really grew on me as it became popular. It's just such a big song with such a melodic and energetic chorus/drop, so of course it was gonna impact my chart.

Commentary

Here's Martin Solveig again and unfortunately he just misses the top 40. The song was an unexpected move from Solveig, seeing him turn to future house with the help of GTA. Whilst it seemed he was just hopping on the bandwagon because of the growing popularity of the sub-genre, it's done very well. Whilst the vocals aren't too special (although fun), the addictive instrumental hook really gives life to it especially when it returns from the great addition of a piano break. Just to be clear, the original mix is most recommended. The radio edit just isn't as good (not to be confused with the video edit, which is basically a shortened version of the original).

'Better' is too subjective. I love Freak Of The Week and its a more complex song than comes across. Can certainly see why King is considered better, but Freak Of The Week has been a 2015 staple for many, myself included.

 

Plenty more highlights here though! The Hills, Uptown Funk, Name & Number, Holding On, The Party, All Cried Out, Hurts, Post To Be, Hotline Bling, Somebody & I Don't Mind are all songs I rinsed this year. :wub:

'Better' is too subjective. I love Freak Of The Week and its a more complex song than comes across. Can certainly see why King is considered better, but Freak Of The Week has been a 2015 staple for many, myself included.

 

Plenty more highlights here though! The Hills, Uptown Funk, Name & Number, Holding On, The Party, All Cried Out, Hurts, Post To Be, Hotline Bling, Somebody & I Don't Mind are all songs I rinsed this year. :wub:

Commentary

99 Souls introduced us to this remix/mash-up when one of the members actually promoted the song on Buzzjack (*_*) and it was seriously amazing. And now it's an actual hit single in the UK which is amazing as for a while it felt like the song was never going to get a proper release. It's just so so good and fresh and it's great to hear Beyoncé's voice on a dance track for once as well as the 'The Boy Is Mine' throwback.

Commentary

MK does it again with great classic sounding piano house-pop which sounds like it could be a chart smasher but of course nothing happened with it. It marks the third time in a row MK has been in my EOY top 40 and the first as not being the remixer.
