Just a topic on the Christmas chart which is so famous. Even this yr when it's quite we have a surprise NHS Choir coming from nowhere!

 

What's your fav moment?

The first one I actually remember was pretty awesome - the battle of the two Mikes (Jackson vs Flowers Pops) in 1995. Earth Song's a great #1 but the Mike Flowers version of 'Wonderwall' would have been hilarious - it managed to win in Scotland!

 

Bob the Builder stopping Westlife in 2000, ending what would have been a ridiculous run of #1s for them.

 

'Proper Chrimbo' beating The Idols in 2003, even if the #1 itself wasn't my ideal choice as The Darkness would have been amazing.

 

Rage Against the Machine getting it in 2009, not even just cus of Joe but because it's the most wonderfully bizarre Xmas #1 of the century. Plus the Pet Shop Boys just sneaking into the top 40 with It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas (in one of the only years it actually did!), that was a brilliant chart in general.

 

Controversial one maybe, but 'Surfin Bird' going top 3 in 2010 - it's actually a really fun track used brilliantly on Family Guy and it was great to finally see it go top 40 here. It ended up being played at a lot of Christmas parties I frequented that year so it provides fun memories of that freezing cold winter.

 

Bieber might add another to this list very soon!

2003 was brilliant. Lots of big new entries and a close battle at the top

 

2002. Girls Aloud vs. One True Voice. I loved their campaigns and how it was all hyped up on the telly.

 

1997. Mark Goodier teased everyone by starting to play Spice Girls at number 2, before revealing they were actually number 1

I was thinking of Dominic The Donkwy the other day, did it like sell 94k copies or something at no3 just because of Chris moyles?

Bob beating Westlife was definitely the best moment but my favourite charts were 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003. Loved those charts.

1994 was a special one for me because it was the year I got my first Walkman (with FM radio!), and my first Now tapes (I'd only been renting tapes from the library before then). They announced the #1 on TOTP at lunchtime on Christmas Day and then had the full top 40 on Radio 1 with Bruno at 4.

They don't do after 1pm on radio 1 on Xmas day now they start their recorded or repeated shows from then on!

The best for me are 1997 with Too Much and 1998 with Goodbye/Chocolate Salty Balls and 2003 which was a close top 5!

As Steve has mentioned, Bob The Builder beating Westlife to the Christmas number 1 in 2000. The chart forum at Dotmusic went into meltdown when that happened!

My favourite was 2003 with a classic top 2 with huge sales for two original songs at a time when it seemed like you didn't get big sales anymore.

Sales were so low in 2003 that pretty much every song in that year's Christmas chart top 10 sold enough to be on the year-end chart. Mad World and Darkness were in the year's top 20 and even Too Lost In You sold enough that week to become the year's 166th best-seller.

Too Lost In You did something like 40,000 to get to number 10.

Doesn't beat December 14th 1997 where all of the Top 10 made the year-end Top 40. :wub:

This year is pretty special as it's a song that people genuinely like not a lazy rubbish charity single like The Justice Collective or a lazy rubbish single from a tv show or stupid campaign like Rage Against the Machine. This hasn't happened since 2003. I think that now the reality shows have died down next year there will be some interesting attempts at a proper Christmas number 1 again.

On the opposite front here is my worst chart moment ever - so should have been a No1 :(

Yep, I love both of those and you can't argue with any of the 'non-christmas' themed #1s as they must have just been genuinely popular tracks to fend off festive sales onslaughts.
