'Your Love' starts the year off well for us with a top 20 position, with 25 nations voting for our entry, although for official purposes it does not count as a hit as the final was made up of only 37 entries so we just missed the top half. Our faves mostly did well though, including the entire top five having been voted for by us (with the winners in Aeroche having received 4 points – they eventually led by 26 over Hendinia who we gave 12 points to).

Only 4 entries we voted for missed the top 20, including unfortunately Thelonia's which we gave 15 points to. Former Danævii winner Gareth Emery also had good success under Altyr Muunilinst having reached 4th with 'Yesterday', unsurprisingly given 18 by the voting public considering the song spent 2 weeks at #1 in the official Danævii chart upon its release (Gareth was sadly too expensive for the DISCC to book to represent us this time around).

Thanks to the statisticians of Persephonia here's some 2019 EOY stats for Danæviia. At the start of the year we made the declaration that "we aren't expecting to be as successful this year, it often won't be chart friendly or please those outside the dancebloc" ~~we say having just entered a chart friendly song in Moko 'Your Love'~~. We were right to some extent, as we don't manage to finish in the EOY top 10 for a third consecutive year, but still finish in a respectable 11th.

JUSTICE for RIOT is SERVERD

we finished in 27th with 48 points in the first semi final of TBO XII with RIOT's track 'Overkill', getting the fifth most points overall out of all the tracks that DNQed throughout the year. So who knows maybe we will end up sending another loud and crazy song sometime this year. but not this contest as we are prepping a track which will act as the successor to Paperwhite's 'Get Away' and Leon Else's 'The City Don't Care' (ft. Oliver) to be our third main contest synthpop entry.

This time around we're going synthpop, or more specifically synthwave, with a great random recent find, and one of our most obscure entries with 1.95k YT views and 44.50k Spotify streams. The song dates from September of last year so we are still yet to send any song released in this decade. I don't expect it'll be quite as big as last contest's two synthy hits but hopefully there'll be a few fans for this anyhow, and it's got a meaty drop to it so it still fits the Danævii brand. Here's what his bandcamp page says about him and the song.

Ace Marino hails from sunny Southern California, though he has only been spotted in daylight at topless pool parties. He prefers to crawl the LA City streets after midnight, cruising Ventura blvd, drifting the curves of Mulholland or racing exotic cars on the 101. He wears sunglasses full time, sports a mullet and pursues his passion for big hair, big snares and sexy synths.

A darkened rhythm section collides with sparkling synth tones for an emotionally complex breakup track on Ace Marino’s new single, "Spaces." The song’s steady ebb and flow provides the perfect undercurrent for powerful lyrics that assess the fallout of a broken relationship, and Ace delivers it all with an impassioned vocal delivery. Without a happy ending in sight, "Spaces" may be one of the most honest and relatable tracks a person hears all year.

BJSC 123: Shapov (feat. Cal) - Chasing Shadows

For our 85th entry we're going back to a more traditional Danævii sound with this progressive trance/house entry from Russian producer Shapov, formerly of Hard Rock Sofa. We discovered him from his multiple collab singles with Armin van Buuren but we aren't so cheap as to send one of those (they're all brilliant if you're intrigued though). Instead we go for his likewise excellent most recent single 'Chasing Shadows', which had been floating around as a demo for many years but eventually got a release a few weeks back. It features Cal (not the Buzzjack poster, but an anonymous female). We hope this can send us back into the final this month, so don't forget to send a few points our way if you're in SF1.

'Chasing Shadows' becomes another Flop for us as we finish in a disappointing 35th - not even a unique position as we previously landed there with Lucas & Steve in BJSC 96. It means we are still yet to get a hit this year, and it becomes the first year since 2012 that we did not achieve a hit within the first three contests of the year (and now that I look, also the first time since then we didn't get a hit in the first two contests, this really is our flop year then). We did however finish top 10 in the semi so at least we comfortably qualified.

Next time, I think we may be bringing back a former entrant of ours again.

For our 86th entry we welcome Vassy back to the BJSC stage! She previously represented us five years ago in BJSC 75 with 'Boss', and now she's coming back for vengeance for it flopping with a catchy dance-pop tune 'Trouble'!

Vassy Karagiorgos is an Australian singer who you may also recognise from the David Guetta smash 'Bad' or the Tiësto & KSHMR hit collab 'Secrets' – although her vocal was processed to the point of non-recognition on those. She becomes the 5th Danævii lady to have been sent multiple times by us following Andreea Banica, Laura Brehm, Lika Morgan and Christina Novelli - a lovely list of names if I do say so myself.

Coming in at exactly 3 minutes [the MV is slightly longer], it is the 2nd shortest entry we have ever sent to a main contest - tying with Radio Killer's 'Don't Let The Music End' - our only shorter entry has been Basto's 'Gregory's Theme' (2:53 on Spotify - slightly shorter on YouTube) [Pep & Rash 'Rumors' shows up as being shorter on Spotify but the video version we sent was slightly longer]. Vassy is queen of the short song as 'Boss' is also one of our shortest at 3:05. I guess you can say we're making up for having sent an eleven minute track and two five-and-a-half minute tracks last year. This year it's all about short and sweet. :P

Cadelicia get our 18 for the first time, having recently got a 15 for 'So Hot' - also I believe 11 points is a personal best for East Rukahavian (and they more than deserve it for them being our all-time biggest supporters, great that we can finally return the favour somewhat) plus Hushkanukia who make our votes for the second time ever with a new PB of 8 points.

Danæviia have decided to do a soft rebrand following our last few flops with more pop-friendly entries, we're now going full niche dance bloc and to start we have "high tech minimal" German producer Boris Brejcha, one of the most popular of the sub-genre and also notable for DJing with a mask (not our first entrant to do so, as we did previously send deadmau5) - featuring a few spoken vocals from Laura Korinth. 'Gravity' was officially released last year, although teased in DJ sets even before - but it only came to my attention a few months back. It became his first Danævii hit and has spent 3 weeks at #1 in the national chart... so far. We're expecting a DNQ with this but hopefully we get a few supporters anyhow, and a better finish than what poor sassy Vassy gave us last contest would be nice. If you like what you hear then make sure to give Boris your vote. :dance:

I have to agree myself. Even if it finishes bottom 10 in the final I'm happy it's managed to get a few keen supporters. Was in two minds over whether to send it but eventually decided I love it too much to not send it.

we get another flop this month but on a brighter note it is our 2nd-best performing entry of the year so far, behind our sole top 20 hit from the start of the year, and we're happy to avoid the bottom 10. Boris & Laura give us a fourth 31st finish, with us also finishing there in contests #69, #76 and #79. We've still yet to ever finish 30th however. We did get five medal points including 3 +18s which was the most out of everything in the bottom 20, so that is another plus. Our top points went to Thelonia, who finished 10th.
