Annoyed that 7 Years is doing well, do we REALLY need any more male singer songwriter types?

I think artists and songs like these appeal to the 'casual listeners' demographic that are more likely to buy music - albums especially. Also, it's very easy to play on stations like Radio 2 and Heart thus widening their appeal even more.

For a record company, it must be quite simple to market these artists. Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith are the best examples because they had songs that appealed to the Radio 2/Heart and the 1Xtra crowd (alongside R1/Capital) - that's a wide range of music listeners!

No, I get why they do well completely but I feel like they're completely unimaginative and all just blend into one lately. I don't mind when it's genuinely a good song, I loved 'The A Team', 'I'm Not The Only One' and 'Hold Back The River' but recent ones like 'Love Yourself', 'Wasn't Expecting That' and now '7 Years' completely lack personality and any identity imo.

I guess it's down to taste. I dislike all of the above, especially 'Wasn't Especting That' and 'Hold Back The River' and find '7 years' to be the first singer-songwritery song in while to show a bit of personality and passion. Saying that, I'm a little annoyed it's climbing so fast because I'd much prefer to see Craig David, Ellie Goulding, Zara Larsson and/or Little Mix as the ones who were sneaking into the top 10 next week.

I agree - it definitely seems like some songs are capitalising on the trend right now. Again, that's down to how easily marketable these songs are. When the 'deep house' trend was at its peak, people were saying the same things about songs like 'I Wanna Feel', 'My Love' and 'I Got U'.

I wish there was more R&B music in the charts personally, it's almost non existent lately.

You like "Hold Back The River" and hate "Love Yourself"?

Please love yourself

I can understand why it's not to everyone's taste but I'm surprised you think 7 Years lacks personality or identity. I think it's really original.
