U2 and Green Day reopen Dome

Virgin.net

U2 and Green Day teamed up to reopen the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans - more than a year after the stadium was hit by Hurricane Katrina.

The rock legends teamed up on a cover version of 'The Saints Are Coming' by The Skids before the American Football clash between New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons on Monday evening.

The bands were joined by New Orleans musicians and U2 guitarist The Edge played on one of Green Day's tracks in a venue that was used to house thousands of stranded people following last year's disaster.

American President George Bush tossed the match coin ahead of the game, which was comfortably won by New Orleans in front of more than 68,000 fans following a £97 million restoration of the Dome.

Green Day and U2 recorded their collaboration at London's Abbey Road Studios last week and it is set to be released as a charity single for The Edge's Music Rising charity, which is raising money for musicians affected by the hurricane.

Speaking ahead of Monday's concert, The Edge said: "If there's any statement, it's us showing up and wanting to support the city.

"It's about rebirth and the future and things coming back to normal."

Speaking about the three-day recording session with U2, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone: "It was almost a punk-rock recording in a lot of ways.

"There was a lot of talking about who was going to play what, and then we just pretty much banged it out.

"To be sitting there in the studio with U2 and talking on a creative level was something you wouldn't imagine in your wildest dreams."
