February 11, 20169 yr Author Italy?? Yep, 188 artists in my database from Italy. Quite a few of them seem to be various different combinations of the same people though!
February 11, 20169 yr A lot of dance acts from Italy. Similarly, I presume Frank Farian is responsible for a lot of the German presence.
February 11, 20169 yr Shall we allow Dee-Tah to be included on the Swedish List, as a Chilean-Born Swedish Artist?
February 11, 20169 yr Shall we allow Dee-Tah to be included on the Swedish List, as a Chilean-Born Swedish Artist? In the same way Eric Turner would probably be regarded as Swedish.
February 11, 20169 yr Author Deetah is an interesting one, I maybe should have included her as my primary point of reference is usually either where they grew up or (if known) citizenship held. Most of the Wikipedia categories she is in actually take her to be British! Eric Turner was born and raised in the US to an American family, so I've got him as American. He is resident in Sweden now though, so like a number of these cases, "you pays your money..." There are a few cases where things could be interesting, for instance if Tina Turner has another new hit (unlikely but not impossible) do we consider her now as Swiss? Sir Cliff is now a Barbadian national, born in India but I will always mark him as British. I've got Placebo there because of a Swedish member, but where does Brian Molko fit in? British or Belgian? He also spent time during his childhood in Lebanon and Liberia. Allocating someone's nationality can be a minefield even where much of the required information is known. It is even worse when a lot of the pieces of the jigsaw are hard to find, for instance most of those who made "fake" pre-release versions a couple of years ago. I don't pretend to be right every time (or even to be 100% consistent but I think I've done a reasonable job).
February 11, 20169 yr You have missed out the following from the Norwegian chart acts list. Carl Espen Born 1982. Eighth in 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. 24-05-2014 Silent storm 94 1wk
February 11, 20169 yr Yes, the Neneh Cherry duplication is an error. Thanks for pointing that out, I will fix that tonight. There's been some discussion about ranks of countries, this is what I have (with the usual caveats) 1 UK 2 USA 3 Germany 4 Italy 5 Netherlands 6 Canada 7 Austalia 8 Ireland 9 France 10 Sweden 11 Belgium 12 Denmark 13 Norway 14 Spain 15 New Zealand 16 Brazil =17 Finland & Switzerland 19 Israel 20 South Africa I thought Ireland would have been ahead of The Netherlands and Canada.
February 12, 20169 yr Forgot about The Netherlands but it's absolutely huge for dance. Impressive to see Germany top three too!
February 12, 20169 yr Is this number of acts or number of hits? I would say Ireland would be a few places higher if it was based on hits.
February 12, 20169 yr Yeah, Irish acts on the whole have more sustained careers than Dutch or Germans (with the exception of a few, those are the lands of one or two-hit wonders, mostly from the dance genre). The golden period for Ireland at the top of the UK charts was surely 1998-2000 - Corrs, Boyzone, Westlife, B*Witched, Ronan, U2 etc...I'd like to see more major Irish acts, but not many seem to crossover at the moment :(
February 12, 20169 yr Author Is this number of acts or number of hits? I would say Ireland would be a few places higher if it was based on hits. Number of acts. I would agree with you about Ireland being higher on number of hits.
February 12, 20169 yr Author OK, a few more countries added to the wish list. Going back a few pages, Russia was requested so here it is. February 12, 20169 yr Fantastic indeed at how many hits Sweden have had compared to the other Nordic countries.
February 13, 20169 yr Thanks very much for Russia (and Romania when you get to it) - I'd be interested in all the Eastern European nations but I'm guessing for the most part it'd just be the odd Eurovision entry if anything!
