September 29, 200618 yr nope ^ his myspace says it's an independant release on an indie label. well obviously only a mate of a mate's record label would release it for him.
September 30, 200618 yr Too bad it will flop, i know he's appeared on Loose Women performing it but he needs more promotion than that. His promotion has been atrocious. As far as I am aware, he's only managed to do The Wright Stuff and Loose Women and the odd bit of local radio. He needs to get on GMTV, which shouldn't be hard because they have a constant stream of the X Factor 2 lot doing pointless little features. in one way it would be funny of he did really well this time just to show simon cowell he should stand by people more, but i really think the whole project will be a big flop Steve is a big embarrassment to Simon and X Factor, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if pressure has been applied onto shows like GMTV not to have Steve on, and instead to plug the new X Factor like mad. I never did like Steve much, so don't care all that much whether he has a deal or not, but Simon did drop him rather pathetically after just one single and is now claiming that he didn't sell 500k albums, so tough! Interestingly, Shayne has yet to sell that many either, despite having had a lot more money spent on him and releasing his album more quickly off the back of the show.

I thought an artist only had to sell 2 or 300k to keep their contract :o
September 30, 200618 yr To be fair to Steve, and that's not easy for me, 'cos he's not an easy bloke to like, I think the parting of the ways was a joint decision. Simon wasn't really interested and only wanted to carry on pushing out covers, Steve wanted to record his own material, so it suited both sides to end the contract. I just think it's a pity that such an unlikeable guy has such a good voice ;)
September 30, 200618 yr I thought an artist only had to sell 2 or 300k to keep their contract :o Alas, I'm thinking Fighting Butterflies will sell something closer to two copies than three hundred thousand. I saw something on TV once, where it was said that only about 7% of single sales were due to quality, the rest were apparently generated because of noteriety, hype etc.
September 30, 200618 yr I thought an artist only had to sell 2 or 300k to keep their contract :o Simon once said that they would expect sales of at least 400,000/450.000 in order to make a profit. Edited September 30, 200618 yr by munchkin
September 30, 200618 yr Simon once said that they would expect sales of at least 400,000/450.000 in order to make a profit. But surely an album by an X-Factor contestant is so cheaply made that it wouldn't require that much to make a profit? :o
October 4, 200618 yr But surely an album by an X-Factor contestant is so cheaply made that it wouldn't require that much to make a profit? :o £2.50
October 4, 200618 yr But surely an album by an X-Factor contestant is so cheaply made that it wouldn't require that much to make a profit? :o It was a comment on sales in general. The £1million contract and upfront money for the winner goes back into the coffers to be used for promotion. It's the second album that really counts - the first is usually put together for whoever wins. It's why Will doesn't think of FNO as his first album because he had barely any input. It's why we were so pleased with how FC sold because it was his baby not the record label's. Edited October 4, 200618 yr by munchkin
October 4, 200618 yr But surely an album by an X-Factor contestant is so cheaply made that it wouldn't require that much to make a profit? :o I'm sure the comments by Simon were said to dismiss Steve's criticisms of him rather than giving us insight into the world of music accounting. Steve's first album was put together very cheaply and there was next to no promotion beyond what happened on X Factor and their tour, so I don't think it can have made a loss. Simon just assumed Steve's second album would make a loss. Fortunately for Simon, most people think that Steve's complaints about his unfair treatment are down to sour grapes, and they are half right. Long before he fell out with Simon Steve was falling out with large chunks of the media because he didn't think they were showing him enough respect. It was incredibly short-sighted of him to think that the gossip columns would be kind to him. They should have seen it coming, he never took criticism well during the show either.
