March 23, 20169 yr For me it fails because it's just not her. It's really awkward to see and she isn't particularly convincing! At least with her past videos they had a lot more character and a lot more of her personality in them. She doesn't need to try so hard to be sexy, coz it just looks awkward and not very appealing... the point of being "sexy" is to "appeal" and it doesn't do either, at least for me. I'd much rather she had a video where she seemed much more comfortable and confident, but I guess that's where the part about her label forcing her to do this comes into play. Sorry if this sounds so patronising or whatever, I really don't mean it to, but that's just how I see it (hopefully someone better with words can try and put my point across in a better way ). The song is still 10/10 though and I am not ashamed tbh. Amazing song.
March 23, 20169 yr Love the song, took a few listens though. The video is alright, nothing amazing but nothing bad. She does look a little out of place at times but I don't think it detracts much from the video. Wish she just did a massive nostalgia-driven late 90s/early 00s video though.
March 23, 20169 yr I'm sorry but this thread is f*cking disgusting. It's one thing to have an opinion but some of the comments are completely unnecessary. Coming for her looks? What does that have to do with the video? Disgraceful. Maybe the fact that she doesn't have this said 'star quality' is what makes her so successful. She doesn't have an entitled, superior look plastered on. She's accessible, she's not perfect. She's one of the 'thicker' pop girls and that, I believe, is the key to driving her success. On a forum where the majority of you would have claimed to be feminists, are you really going to be bitchy enough to bring down the girl who will have been forced by her label to act a little sexier, in a pop climate where sex sells and she's forced to compete with the Fifth Harmony's and Selena Gomez's flashing their perfectly svelte, toned figures?! And good on her for even trying! For the record, she spends the majority of the video covered in a full-length trench coat with a little cleavage showing. The rest is hair flicks & choreography. I just can't fathom the hate for that video. I'm not sure where this 'forced sexy' thing has come from? She looks like a popstar making a pop video.. Could it be that she was uncomfortable acting that way and that's why it's come across? Personally, I don't see it. I see a perfectly crafted pop video and it's quite refreshing to see a popstar delivering a good music video without being half naked. It'd have been different as well if this music video came from one of those artists because a) of their figure and fans on here and b) her looks have little do with the video, as you say. But really you've hit the whole nail on the head with this post
March 23, 20169 yr I think 'f***ing disgusting' is a slight overreaction, Scherz. I don't think many/any of us are saying 'she's not good looking so I simply don't like her', they just mentioned that the vibe she's going for in this video comes across and unconvincing and awkward. I don't think 'being a feminist' really comes into to this argument. Meghan can do as she likes, just as with Selena Gomez and 5H (the latter who have also been laughed at for unconvincingly trying to be sexy in their new video.) it just isn't working for Meghan in the NO video.

No, it's not. You maybe didn't say that and it may not have been said in that way, but there were comments on her looks. And you maybe want to re-read what I said because that's not the issue. The issue is that she is a 22 year old songwriter that wound up being a popstar.. And quite obviously, she's uncomfortable with showing skin and being sexy but will have been told that in order to compete she would have to 'sex it up'. So she tried. Maybe you think it's uncomfortable, maybe you don't. But to bring her down because you don't like a few songs that she's sang and to comment that she has no star quality and that she's 'tragic'?! Then what are you interested for? The music video is fine. It's her that people have the problem with. I'm not even some Meghan stan that's looking to stick up for her 'because I love her', it's just exhausting and a little uneasy to see. And if this were some male popstar that was a little thicker than the 'norm' and he put out a video like this, it wouldn't even be a problem.
March 23, 20169 yr Nobody held a gun to her head and forced her to become a popstar or to do anything she already has done. She chose to make the kind of music that would be in competition with people like Selena and 5H, so she needs to make an effort to compete, she can't just make a half arsed attempt and expect it to pull off. It's a business at the end of the day.
March 23, 20169 yr My comments on her lack of star quality wasn't exclusive to her sex appeal. It's the constantly vacant, gormless expression on her face, her clumsily doing the dance moves - she just seems half-there and it's not making me think "wow". She may be uncomfortable doing the sexier scenes but this is the same girl who sang about embracing your curves and in fact criticised other body shapes (regardless of how irony-tinged they may have been).
March 23, 20169 yr What a crock of shet - this song, this video and this post: I'm sorry but this thread is f*cking disgusting. The song and video are pop trash, forced on her by the record label. She had to change her sound because THEY said, which she admitted (albeit in PR speak). She's clearly uncomfortable in all this, both musically and visually. And yes, it kinda IS a bit different when you are a NOVELTY act, with your first novelty song based AROUND your size, and calling people 'skinny bitches'. You can't debut your whole act around your size and then be SURPRISED when people then comment when you look out of place trying to be sexy in skimpy clothes. Sexy is about being comfortable and confident - and here she's neither! There's a reason Adele isn't getting comments on her appearance - 1.) she doesn't do unflattering things and 2.) she NEVER based her career around not being size 0, as well as being infinitely better. March 23, 20169 yr I still can't get through that whole song. While the singles from her first album were slightly annoying and kinda cheesy, it felt genuine. This feels really fake, and the video doesn't help. Who is the skinny silhouette dancing infront of the red screen? Why did they not tell her, don't bother dancing, you're so out of time with the dancers and you look like your putting in a 1/10 of the effort. I feel like Meghan has so much potential to be an above average pop star, that serves us with a bop or too per album. No however is a cringey song and Meghan looks embarrassed in the video.
March 23, 20169 yr Yup! Looks like they see her with potential as a pop star and not a novelty act and are forcing her down this poppy route.
March 23, 20169 yr It not the fact she isnt good looking (No one said that ) but the way she tries to come across as sexy makes her look so awkward and uncomfortable. Also how does the theme of the video correlate with the theme of the song, it doesn't
March 23, 20169 yr And if this were some male popstar that was a little thicker than the 'norm' and he put out a video like this, it wouldn't even be a problem. That would probably be because overweight men attempting to look sexy in music videos isn't really a thing that happens? It doesn't matter why she's trying to look sexy (poor her if her label are restrictive but this is an assessment of her art, not how bad we feel for her?) if her unconvincing attempt makes for a shit video, and when 90% of the complaints about the video aren't about her looks (one person mentioned them - congrats on finding a brush to paint everyone with) but rather her awkwardness and general inability to be a competent popstar, you really shouldn't pull the misogyny card. At the end of the day music videos are just 3 minutes of acting and people get pulled up for bad acting all the time, whether it's an awkward person failing a sex scene (relevant!) or an emotional plank of wood failing to look sad or whatever. If Meghan can't act then she deserves to be called out for it and well, she can't. Which is a bit shit for a popstar to be quite honest. Not even going to get into "[insert excuse for video being awful here]" sharing a post with "the video is perfect!" but just so you know, it's actually possible for "if a man did X, it wouldn't be a problem" to be a false statement at times. Not every criticism ever is directed exclusively at women.
March 23, 20169 yr I think there's also the issue that she seems to be trying so hard to do so little. The video elements in itself are minimalistic (like the choreography, effortlessly blocked but there's not that much to do), but she seems to give so much that it seems like she's lost. She looks awkward, as a target audience member I feel awkward, it lacks that sort of spark that made her music videos the way they were in the first era.
March 23, 20169 yr It not the fact she isnt good looking (No one said that ) but the way she tries to come across as sexy makes her look so awkward and uncomfortable. Also how does the theme of the video correlate with the theme of the song, it doesn't  Have a re-read of the forum. Yes, they did.
March 23, 20169 yr All I've seen is people saying she looks awkward and too try hard. Which has nothing to do with her looks? Infact YOU were the one to bring her size into the conversation. Edited March 23, 20169 yr by Regina
March 23, 20169 yr I am still really loving this song, but yeah, the video is a mess  It's not because she's incapable of being "sexy" or whatever, it just feels awkward to watch like she's not attached to the song she's singing? Plus it feels like she's staring into my soul. This song could've so easily had a really empowering music video to go along with it, but I didn't get the feeling of empowerment from that video at all. Moreover, it doesn't seem to me that she was "forced" into doing this video  (https://www.instagram.com/p/BDOL1WROSoM/)

Look harder: And I'm sorry to say it, and I kind of expect to get hate for this so I apologise in a way, but I think it comes down to the fact she's not good looking And yes, let's take everything on face value because Kesha looked like she was forced into working with Dr Luke, didn't she.
