OK, you're a kid, you have no concept of what is or isn't cool, you just hear some record you go mad on before hitting the age of 10 or so. There are loads n loads for me, and here's one for a start...

 

I know this has been tried before, but by Novelty it should be a record designed to appeal to children, or designed to be amusing to children (and adults). It's a lost art-form and it needs reviving! Pop groups that appeal to pre-teens don't count B-)

well I wasnt a child in the 80's so...

 

actually I still like Tight Fit, Ottawan, bought Captain Sensible, enjoyed Rene & Renata, and The Scaffold were 60's faves of mine, especially as I lived in Scouse-land, or visited often, in the late 60's.

 

Earlier inspirations were Windmill In Old Amsterdam, My Brother, and any number of Ed Stewpot Junior Choice regular faves. Top novelty songwriter: Ray Stevens, so inventive, bit of an idol of mine, even non-novelty

 

Grown-up though, my most-fave novelty record is one of his and has no lyrical subtlety at all:

Renee & Renato are thought of as novelty?

 

i was always under the impression they were just a 1 hit wonder- and people never liked them

 

what annoys me no end is when rradio stations play the song, but play smashing glass, animal sounds, what ever else over the top of it so you can't hear the lyrics

 

i got so annoyed that a couple of weekends ago i wrote in to my local station, please can you play Renee & Renato save your love in full, without the glass or any other rubbish over the top!. it's a great song and stations obviously can't respect that

 

and they did. i was within my right to ask for it, it was the sunday morning request show

 

they just said, and the next request we have is for emily... she's asked for Renee & Renato and read my email to them out.

 

then commented that they liked the song and didn't see why stations chose to do that either.

 

highlight of my weekend. hearing Renee & Renato in full without interuption

 

okay, back to discussing novelty songs..

funny little song by Val Doonican

Rene And Renata I think was more tongue-in-cheek with affection than novelty - it certainly wasn't aimed specifically at children! My grandma loved it! I think it was the sort-of ice-cream advert association with One More Cornetto advert that made it faintly novel.

 

Val Doonican was another man of many fab kiddie novelty hits! And gorgeous straight ones! Lovely voice. Delaneys Donkey was one I recall fondly, and O'Rafferty's Motorcar. And they were pushing it, shoving it (the donkey not the car!) :lol:

Perhaps Save Your Love was not intended as a novelty record but it did become one. The video in particular has a great novelty feel to it.

 

That's quite an interesting story about the radio station though :)
