So national final season is OVER for another year </3 It only seems like yesterday since Ryan was abandoning his family on Christmas Day to watch the Albanian semi final. Now as ever, some countries got it very right whilst others got it VERY WRONG, so in this thread I shall be revisiting some of the 2016 NF gems, lost to the masses, but not forgotten by the internet gays. I hope this thread proves to you that Eurovision is not just a ONE WEEK A YEAR affair!!! So buckle up and get ready, because everyone wants to win!

Simone - Heart Shaped Hole

Well let’s kick off with the most obvious WHAT THE FUCK *insert country name* of the entire season. Denmark had to go into this year as favourites, what with winning the previous 2 times Sweden had hosted. And they so could’ve made it 3 in a row, when this powerhouse, Sia-esque, moment of LIFE presented itself. Everyone was talking about it, the bookies had it down as a one horse race and after 2, so close but yet so far, attempts for Simone in

and
, was it finally time for Simone to make the long awaited trip to the Grand Prix de l’Eurovision?! Sadly not, as an unfavourable running order draw by the producers (2nd?!?!) and the inevitable BAD TASTE from the MoR Danes, Simone found herself in 3rd place. She did however briefly make it into the Swedish iTunes chart, going as high as #34! Maybe it can be 4th time lucky for Simone in 2019.

Veronicas Illusion - The Wrong Kind

If you’ve ever wondered what a 2008 Icona Pop single would’ve sounded like, this is it. There’s a hint of ‘Karma’ by The Saturdays and in fact, THIS is the song Krista Siegfrids shoud’ve entered into Melodifestivalen this year. All the pop hoes on this site would and SHOULD lap this up! Sadly, this didn’t make it to the superfinal and it probably wasn’t even close either.

Ooh isn't this exciting! :o Flaka, Riga Beaver and the Icelandic swear-a-thon already getting them mentions *.*
Well I firmly believe if Anja had been selected she would be the current bookies' favourite to win, it just screams winner of anything it is ever in! Simone would probably be contending too, but Anja just had the staging of a winner.
YAY *.* I'm so glad this is being done by someone with taste and with infinitely more commitment and willpower than me
Anja is the biggest missed opportunity of the year alongside Maraget's Cool Me Down of course :(
Anja wouldn't win because it brought literally nothing new to the table over Only Teardrops. Nothing so outright patterned on a previous winner has come close to winning in the modern era.
All the national finals went pretty much right for me except for Anja and Margaret, so I have to be pretty pleased really. But those two are such missed opportunities!

Xuso Jones - Victorious

OK so this is a rent-a-Swede rush job but HEY I’m easy to please and this is SO Eurovision. Co-written by ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Amazing’ composer Peter Boström, this was seen as the clear favourite to win for Spain. Xuso was the biggest name going into the NF, after his career kick started with a viral YouTube video singing in a McDonalds drive-thru. (

) It helps he’s very easy on the eye as well x

Electric Nana - Now

This is quite an interesting one because on the one hand, it feels a bit demo-ish, however it’s also really catchy, feisty and full of attitude so I think it’s worthy of a mention. It’s the sort of stuff Amelia Lily would be doing if she was still relevant and it’s a hell of a lot better than what topped the

(Seriously, this is why UK juries need to be banned immediately)

(for fans of every Spanish/Latin song ever and something called the J*nior Eurovision Song Contest)
That Xuso video reminds me how horrendous the backing singers in most of those Spanish performances were and how clever María was to use pre-recorded ones!

Margaret - Cool Me Down

*NF performance not available on YouTube

Ladies and gentleman, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 is not even GOING TO STOCKHOLM. Fucking joke. Where Frans from Sweden is going to mop up the Sheeran/Bieber/Lukas Graham vote, Margaret would've cleared up with the Zara Larsson vote.

(for fans of Zlata Ognenvich - Gravity lite and the motto ‘if at first you don’t succeed, rig and rig again)

OKAY so I've decided to follow this, I don't listen to more than 6/7 actual entries in advance every year but I can listen to the rejects, I guess!

Simone - Heart Shaped Hole: I'd already heard this, I think it's a fantastic song but when I saw it performed, I wasn't convinced she carried it and it came across more 'twee' than the punchy I think it should've done. Anja was the best of the top 3 for sure.

Veronicas Illusion - The Wrong Kind: WOW, this is the best thing I've heard from the DMGP, was previously Anja until I heard this because obviously this didn't go top 3 which is all I tuned in for. I agree I could definitely imagine hearing it on Headlines or Wordshaker, quite 2012 girlband pop and ALL THE BETTER FOR IT, what a two-part chorus

Xuso - Victorious: Surprisingly didn't love that considering I'm sure I was told it was basically a "Swedish Danny" but as usual, they're always third-rate Danny's at best. The backing vocals didn't help, it was a GOOD song but that's all and it felt a bit thin on the ground really.

Electric Nana - Now: I think you're clutching at straws a little bit to put this past the "it sounds like a demo" judgement. Very amateur and actually quite annoying in its attempts to be catchy.

Margaret - Cool Me Down: FINALLY got round to listening to this and it certainly had a lot to live up to after you guys hyping it up but it definitely lives up to it, that would sound totally correct if I heard it on Radio 1 right now, I wouldn't think it sounded like a "Rihanna reject", it just genuinely sounds like a fantastic, hit ready song in its own right, not trying to cater to Eurovision at all. Very impressive and a great loss to Eurovision to not have it, for sure.

Andra Olteanu - Nai Nai

This is the closest we got to a Romanian slut pop jam this year, it could easily have been an entry in the mid 2000s, which naturally, makes it amazing.

M I H A I - Paradisio

10 years after placing 4th for Romania with the almighty

, Mihai Traistariu returned as M I H A I, inspired no doubt by the success of ZAYN. ‘Paradisio’ is one hot mess. Unfortunately, I can’t link you to the simultaneous greatest and worst video of all time, as he deleted the 15,000€ masterpiece days after putting it online, after many negative reviews. It was all down hill from there really, as the hot favourite crashed out in 5th place in the final. There were only 6 acts.

Brooke - Golden

I’m sure everyone is familiar with this after it smashed your last place favourites in the BJSC *.* This song just makes me happy and it really is a empowerment anthem for our times! If anyone was going to cause an upset to Maltese empress Ira Losco (and in a NF where 80% of the vote came from the 5 member jury) Brooke was the one! And she did give Ira a slight run for her money when she topped the first two jurors ranks.

Ira Losco - Chameleon (Invincible)

And so onto the winner of Malta’s NF (except they’re going with a different song now, so I can talk about ‘Chameleon’ here). 14 years after she was ROBBED BLIND in Tallinn by some

, Ira finally made her long awaited return to the Eurovision stage. ‘Chameleon’ is by no means a modern masterpiece, but it’s a solid Eurovision pop song that’ll easily liven up a cold, dark, dreary night in January. There’s the obvious attempts to appeal to the Swedish fans here as Agnes’ strings and the Euphoria horn has been stolen for maximum impact.
