Posted September 30, 200618 yr One of the very best UK drama series of the 90s Cracker makes a return after almost a decade. For those who never got the chance to watch it, this is a brilliant psychological 'whydunnit' (as opposed to 'whodunnit') series in which we know the identity of the killer from the off, but as viewers we get the chance to go into their psyche to uncover their motives and reasons; believe me, this sort of TV crime drama was practically unheard of back when this first came out, and it has never been done as well since. Robbie Coltrane (no, dont laugh, he is a SUPERB serious actor...) plays brilliant Criminal Psychologist Fitz who peels back the psychological layers of onions in the killer's mind.... This special one-off episode written by the show's creator, Jimmy McGovern, couldn't be more relevant, a former soldier psychologically traumatised by experiences in Northern Ireland goes off on a killing rampage around the time of the Iraq invasion, his targets are US citizens living in the UK. This promises to be a pretty bloody controversial topic and dramatically it's gonna be really hot stuff..... If you've never seen "Cracker", this is the ideal place to start, then go to ITV3 and watch the repeats of the brilliant original shows. You will NOT be disappointed....
September 30, 200618 yr My mum was telling me how amazing this was, I never saw it the first time round so I'm gonna watch this tomorrow.

September 30, 200618 yr My mum was telling me how amazing this was, I never saw it the first time round so I'm gonna watch this tomorrow. Same here, my mum's always on about how great Cracker was :D So much that she wanted to see Harry Potter just because Robbie Coltrane was in it!
September 30, 200618 yr Author never missed the original series, hope this lives up to it. I'm sure there wont be any problems, the show's creator is doing the script, so it aint as if it's gonna be some hack's just been drafted in by ITV to mess things up...
October 1, 200618 yr yes can't wait cracker is amazing i have seen all of them he is really good i will be watching it :D :cheer:
October 2, 200618 yr Author So, any thougts or opinions of last night's show...? Personally, I thought it was a pretty fantastic and thought provoking story. It pretty much lays out what Jimmy McGovern thinks of America (ie, a nation of hypocrites who were quite happy to support and fund terrorism in Northern Ireland until they got a taste of their own medicine on 9/11); yes it was cynical, yes it could be pretty near the knuckle at times, but McGovern's intention was to provoke debate, and I think he achieved that pretty well... Dramatically, it was extremely well structured, it was never predictable or easy to figure out how it would end and when the ending did come, it was a shock.... Even more shocking was the fact that you could actually identify with the killer and understand his motives, but then "Cracker" always was rather good at doing that....
October 2, 200618 yr It was amazing. I must try and watch the old ones somehow. ^_^ Also it got 8.1m compared to Jane Eyre's 5.6m. :P

Hopefully it wont just be a one-off, it would be nice to have old Robbie back for some more....
October 2, 200618 yr fantastic.... possibly the best ever episode - gripping. And the guy was saying EXACTLY what I've been saying about America/Ireland/terrorism that I've been saying since 9/11. Uber-political.... and absolutely classic. Coltrane is one of our very finest, he really is.
