I keep hearing that it's not as mainstream as Fallen, no hooks at all. Is that true? I liked "Weight of the world" but that's all I heard. Is is true that the album has no hooks?

I was planning to buy it, but the reviews are not what I wished they would be. I loved how Fallen had amazing hooks. I want to buy it before I listen it, but I don't want to buy something I won't like.

When I first heard the album truthfully I thought 'oh my what is this' and couldn't connect with it at all, just because it is so different to Fallen. I'm a long time Evanescence fan but I was a little disappointed at first even though I might not have shown it.

After a few more plays though lyrically, emotionally and musically a lot of the tracks really stand out and now there isn't one I dislike and I'm really loving the whole thing. Buying the disc on monday asap when it's released here!

What I say is buy it and if you don't like it sell it on ebay!

yeah i totally agree with natalie.

When i first heard it, I was gutted.

But after listening to the lyrics, the songs hit me.

Now i LOVE the album SO much

its beautifull

Thanks for the replies.

So it's not catchy? Do you consider Weight Of The World and Sweet Sacrifice catchy? I liked those on first listen [yes, I just downloaded SS too.]

I was waiting to buy it, but than I realized... "whoa, I need that money" so :P

I thought Sweet Sacrifice was very catchy yes and Weight Of The World, I love the chorus 'if you love me, then let go of me'.

I'm not a big fan of "Fallen", bar a few tracks, to be honest, preferring their pre-"Fallen" material, but I've downloaded this and I'm thinking that it's actually not bad; I still cant really get into "Call Me When You're Sober", I feel that is a mistake to release as a comeback single, it is pretty much a weak link on the album.... However, this album is beginning to make me re-assess my opinion of Evanescence, which at one point was incredibly low.

I kind of think that not releasing quite such an easy-to-get album, but rather one that you'll have to work on and actually listen to a few times will pay them greater dividends.... I think there's more depth to "The Open Door" than "Fallen".... They're not exactly going to the depths that bands like Tool, Lacuna Coil or System of a Down do  , but hey, it's in the right direction at least.....

^^^ For once I do agree.

It's much nicer for me personally, when I buy any album, that I have to think about what the different tracks mean to me, like you say having to work and listen. I like the fact The Open Door is less commercial than Fallen aswell. It's like Origin, had any of that been release I think a lot of people wouldn't have understood. I adore it though it's a lot more free and different perhaps, to some of the later stuff.

I see what you're saying about CMWYS, if you hear it not having heard the album it's a lot different to when you play the album with is on. If that makes sense. It's an awesome song but I'm not sure it "fits" the rest of the tracks.

CMWYS sticks out like a sore thumb really.... It's a bit like when Nirvana did "In Utero", but you could just tell which ones were gonna be the singles because they were the ones that had Steve Albini's more hard-edged, raw production, ahem, 'polished' shall we say....?

My main issue with Ev was always that I perceived that they were more concerned with commercial success than actually sticking to their guns no matter if it was 'shifting units' or not... The "rapping" on 'Bring Me To Life' (at least if you're gonna do it, do it properly and get one of the guys from Linkin Park or Zach from Rage Against the Machine to do guest vocals... ) and the fact that it featured very prominently on a very bad Hollywood movie just pissed me off... That and the fact that all the European Gothic Rock bands that had been the most influential on them (bands like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Paradise Lost, etc) were being criminally ignored, I found it incredibly insulting that one turd of a music journalist actually described Lacuna Coil's Christina Scabbia as being "the new Amy Lee".... <_< Not Ev's or Amy's fault to be sure which I now recognise, but still you can perhaps understand my past hostility to Ev....

Its not as mainstream or as poppy as 'Fallen' (undoubtedly because Ben Moddy isn't on board) but I think it gives you the oppurtunity to look at the lyrics for what they are rather than listening for "the catchy tune". It is a real grower and very meaningful and deep music. Dare I say I prefer it to "Fallen".

It's easy to just blame Ben Moody for the mainstream-ness of "Fallen" (and considering who he's been associating with Post-Ev there is a great deal of evidence to condemn him...), but he was with them during the "Origin" days as well, so it's kinda odd really innit....?

There's no doubt though that drafting in the guy from the rather excellent and vastly under-rated Cold (shame on you if you've never heard them.....Just kidding.... , but you should listen to them, especially the excellent "13 Ways To Bleed Onstage" album...) has injected a bit of edge to them, and it has led to an improvement in the over-all sound of the band....

I'm glad you guys like the lyrics. That was my biggest fear after reading the lyrics to Weight Of The World. I fnd it stupid she wrote a complain song to the old fans. Her voice sounds very computerized too. I love Evanescence for their lyrics and vocals, so if they suck in those departments, it has got to be at least catchy for me to buy it.

Call Me When You're Sober was preety catchy but sucked.

I listened to "Last Song I'm Wasting On You" and while I liked it, I wouldn't like it if the entire album was just a bunch of verses without chorus.

Different like Origin? That would be sweet. Origin is what I call catchy too. Bjork's "Human Behaviour" is not catchy to me.

Ben (and you all know I really dislike him) can't be blamed for anything to do with the music really. But obviously last time he was one of the main writing powers and taking him away obviously shifted the balance and therefore created a different sound.

I think during the Fallen era a lot of people in the band were in a 'bad place' and that's where, in my mind, a lot of the lyrics sprung from. But now Amy admits she is actually happy and it does show. I mean Good Enough is beautiful yet unlike typical Ev. it evokes something in you for other reasons. Like Jake said it's nice to listen for the words and not for the tune. If the tune is catchy people tend to look past what is being said.

The Last Song I'm Wasting On You isn't on the cd album for various reasons, which I'm actually quite glad of, it's a very personal song and in my mind doesn't reflect the rest of the album. So I wouldn't base your opinion too much on that one track. :)

I downloaded Weight Of The World and it sounds BRILL  It's OUT NOW! :o
Bought it, it's not alike Fallen at all but hey I don't mind it

It's a risk that has done well releasing something that's not as mainstream. I do think CMWYS holds the most single appeal IE it will get played on the radio - it's the most commercial track on the whole album imo probably why it was picked as the 1st single.

I have waited a long time and I was very disappointed with it at first like many but it has grown on me greatly. Such a great album full of deep, thoughtful lyrics. It's something utterly different to 'Fallen' which is what I was hoping.

Once again I think they may actually get their sucsess out of it from the album and the singles may not do that well.

The singles didn't do that badly on 'Fallen,' but it was only 'Bring Me To Life,' which was the top 5 hit and I can see the same with 'The Open Door,' and 'CMWYS.'

This is certainly an albums selling album rather than a singles selling album. It should hopegully do well. They shouldn't do too shoddily as they're fairly estabilished in the UK now. First week sales of 95k weren't too bad and if they get 'Lithium' out in time for Christmas they'll certainly reep the rewards. ^_^ .
