I don't understand some people saying the single is doing fine for now because people are curious to hear TT on a dance track. TT have started with dance music, so this isn't exactly a novelty :/

I just hope TT can overtake Beyonce and Drake; it seems unlikely for now.

On merits alone, though, Cry deserves to be no 1.

Fantastic to see progress internationally!!

Delighted to see it up to #4!

Finally a release strategy done correct and look at it achieve sales :yahoo: Its opening is strong with a rise to itunes number 4 at the moment. It would be wonderful if it can remain steady in the iTunes top 10 all week (or number 1) and streaming to increase as the week/weeks move forward.
Did you all hear that Take That have been added to the Radio 1 Big Weekend line up?! Never expected this as Radio 1 haven't playlisted TT in yeeeears, I guess they're getting on board with this one.

I did hear the news and it seems something important, but could someone explain to me, please, what this Big Weekend is? Is it some sort of Live Lounge or a gtig or what?

Ok, Jay or Joe or whoever posted about Popjustice stirred my interest, so I had a quick look at the TT thread. I don't advise any Gary fans to go there :) It seems like there's a bunch of bitter Mark fans, who basically like anything Mark does and dislike anything Gary does. And, no surprise, they hate the fact that Gary has lead vocals on Cry. I also think they're not entirely sane, cause they're saying Gary sounds bad. If there's something that stands out on Cry are exactly Gary's vocals, something most people picked up on.

But then again, "fans" on Popjustice like Hey Boy, so....

It was Joe, not me  but yeah I personally don't think Mark's voice could have fitted a Sigma style song...but traditionally TT have always gone with a lead vocalist and on the odd occasion, they'll have 2 singing lead vocal (said it all, the flood)

Good to hear they are on the R1 festival. Hopefully it'll increase longevity

It'll be a great result if Take That can get a top 5. #1 is probably too difficult given that JT, Calvin Harris/Rihanna, Drake and Beyoncé are high at both downloads and streams.

To be honest though - if its only Gary's vocal you can hear - maybe it should have been released as a Gary Barlow/Sigma collaboration and left the 'TT' bit out of it. It seems like its just the popular boy at sixth form inviting his uglier, less popular friends along to the party in the hope that they'll cop-off!

I'd be happy with a top 10. Top 5 would be amazing, but the streaming is gonna be a problem.

I truly believe the song will be all over radios very soon, cause it's infectious.

Kath, Mark and Howard are big boys. Surely if they didn't like being put in this position, they wouldn't accept it. Nobody's forcing them do anything against their will.

Of course they can! And its easy money for them isn't it? Just turn up and take the money. I'm sure I'd do the same! Well we all would! :)

Been out at work all day - just come back. What's been kicking off on Twitter? Haven't had much of a chance to look but gather there are some disgruntled people around - Sigma, TT fans, don't know yet. I did read one quite nasty message directed at Sigma for their collaboration with TT and Sigma responded with a two fingered salute!! Actually the horrible comments were directed at Sigma for lowering themselves to work with ..... ( I'll leave you all to guess the rest:) )

Milly I did think there would be a backlash against the dominance of Gary's vocals. I'm sorry about what I'm about to say on that subject but they are deluded if they think that Mark's vocals would have been comparable to Gary's. He sounds great on the song - which I can see is doing well since its release. I can't comment on the song sounding the same as other Sigma songs because I don't follow their work so I can only judge this particular effort, which I happen to think is a great song.

Nobody looking out to collab with Take That would want anyone other than Gary on the lead vocals.

Granted, Mark and Howard's voices could have been put to better use, but, in the end, the song sounds great and that benefits both TT and Sigma, as evidenced by the iTunes position.

I hadn't even known about the twitter spats. I just had a look and I have to admit I liked Sigma's replies to those idiots.

I don't understand the comparisons with Glitterball or Coming Home. Yes, it's the same structure, just like all pop songs have the same structure. That doesn't mean all the songs sound the same. Cry has a distinct gospel sound that lacks from all the previous Sigma tracks.

For the life of me, if people don't like a record then simply don't buy it. I really don't understand why people have to hate on artists. I'm perplexed as to why Sigma or D&B fans think it's beneath them to collaborate with TT. Like the song or don't like the song, but to dismiss and post vile comments on line is despicable in my view. Some people are looking to latch onto anything to criticise Gary/TT. If it wasn't this collaboration it would be something else.

TT are damned if they do, and damned if they don't at the moment. If they'd returned with their trademark MOR ballad people would have sighted the predictability angle. As someone has already mentioned, TT started out with a dance vibe and Howard is a big fan of this genre, hence his DJ work. And, to be frank, the more I hear the song the more I think it has a TT twist to it with a gospel vibe thrown in.

Can anyone actually explain the single chart to me? Does it mean whoever has the biggest sales at a certain point tonight is No 1 for the week? Years ago is was straight forward and based on physical sales. If an act had sold the most singles by... time on the Sunday they were No 1 for the week. Given that Sigma/TT released today there's no way they can over take sales from artists who released earlier in the week- or have Calvin Harris, Drake etc only released their singles today as well?

For the artists who released their singles in the previous weeks, only this week's sales (from today till Thursday) count for next week's chart. But they do have the advantage of having bigger streaming numbers, something TT don't have. Even if TT - by some miracle - get to no 1 on iTunes and stay there till Thursday, they might still not be no 1 in the official chart on Friday if their streaming is poor.

We'll have to wait for the first mid-weeks to see how much they've sold so far.

I'm glad to see the song is rising in popularity and I think it might even overtake Drake on iTunes.

Agree with everything you said, Dylan.

1. Sales are now counted from Friday to Thursday

2. The chart now combines sales and streams (100 streams=1 download). What this does is that sometimes a song that does really well in streaming may chart higher than newer songs that have lower streaming figures (Drake is #1 on the charts this week despite JT outselling him, and Drake/Rihanna's new song is #8 on the charts despite only just reaching the top 20 on iTunes)

3. Because of streaming, more songs have longevity on the charts now, and newer songs also chart lower because of this (This is Drake's 6th week on #1, and 3 of Justin Bieber's songs are still in the top 50 after half a year)

Thanks Milly and iamstrong, although to be honest I still don't fully understand the concept. Call me old fashioned but it should be based on sales only. Unclear how streaming really works, but in theory does it mean that someone can simply put a song on a loop. Absolutely bonkers :)

Based on this approach it'll be difficult for older artists to gain a No 1 because in the main their fan base will be use to buying physical copies or at best downloading and streaming will invariably go against them - no wonder the music industry is in such dire straits.

I haven't heard Drake's single -is it any good!!!???

I've decided to stay away from Twitter. There are some 'interesting' comments doing the rounds. I know Gary creeps onto Twitter - some of the comments may make what's left of his hair curl :)

Drake's single is catchy enough if you're into dancehall/Afrobeat music (like most of Rihanna's output). I've been hearing it a lot at school, and I went to a club and when this song came on everyone went nuts and ran onto the dancefloor. Don't expect power vocals though. It's just a song made for dancing.

Thanks -I'll check it out. Given it's been at the top for so long it must have terrific sales.

In terms of Cry the real test will be its longevity. I would expect relatively high sales in the first couple of days but long term this will be harder to sustain unless there's good support from radio stations.
