Posted March 29, 200619 yr Anyone else heard this fantastic Swedish Melodic Dark Rock (with a Gothy twist..) band? They started out as a heavy-as-fukk Doom Metal band in the vein of My Dying Bride or Catherdral, but have gradually honed their sound into this incredibly melodic and atmospheric Gothy Rock which has more in common with stuff like Paradise Lost, Anathema or HIM (but without all the baggage that HIM seem to unfortunately carry...). With the success of bands like HIM, Evanescence, etc and the growing awareness of Nightwish, Within Temptation, etc, I find it quite astonishing that Katatonia have not gained a bit more prominence... But, it's surely only a matter of time, new album "The Great Cold Distance" (their SEVENTH...) is a wonderful piece of melodic heaviness with at least seven potential hit singles, and an upcoming proper UK tour I think their status of being Sweden's best kept Rock secret may be about to be shattered....
March 29, 200619 yr ...and absolutely not to be confused with the (equally fabulous) Welsh indie band whose name is pronounced the same but begins with a C. ;)

April 1, 200619 yr No, don't leave Slick, check 'em out..... :D http://www.katatonia.com/ Not my thing I'm afraid, tbh I don't know why I look in here. I don't like this sort of music at all

Is it bands like Slipknot? Iron Maiden? Metallica? Slayer? There's a hell of a lot more to it than that - bands like Katatonia, The Gathering, Anathema, etc are NOT your typical "sceamy" metal acts - they bend more towards creating melodic and atmospheric guitar-based music with absolutely no screaming or wibbly, noodly guitar solos in sight (well, Katatonia's earlier material was a lot heavier, but the past four or five albums have leant towards a far more melodic sound.....). They're put under the 'Metal' umbrella because it's almost impossible to figure out where else they could go, but Anathema and The Gathering have more in common with bands like Pink Floyd or Radiohead than anything else...

I've never liked any sort of rock to be honest, I'm only now getting into indie.
