Posted October 1, 200618 yr According to John Reid now Home Secretary, he notoriously predicted that the British would serve their tour of duty without a shot being fired. Visits to troops by news teams have been discouraged or stage-managed. Water has run out, so soldiers drink from disease-carrying rivers. They eat bread scrounged from Afghan troops. Squaddies are tormented by sand flies and scorpions and are driven mad by stress. They are attacked by Taliban militiamen on motorbikes who open fire while clutching children in front of themselves. Battles take place against a backdrop of burning villages reduced to rubble by aerial bombardment. On occasion, panic-stricken combatants have used satellite phones to call England with the harrowing message that they are about to die. A cloak of secrecy that has hitherto surrounded operations has been ordered by politicians rather than the military. This is all down to Tony Blair a labour Prime Minister. Why are we fighting here, when the rest of NATO obviously don’t want to.
October 2, 200618 yr We've been fed a pack of bullsh!t about this war as well... I remember when this first started out, and the pharse "it'll all be over by Christmas" wasnt actually used, but the impression that was given was that this was gonna be a cake-walk, five years later and things have gotten significantly worse and the Govt still deny the facts. We were told that the Taliban power structure had been destroyed, utter rubbish, they just upped and went into the mountains, a very clever tactical retreat as opposed to the rout the Govt would have us believe. Anyone who knows a damn thing about history would actually know that the Afghans are expert mountain fighters and that bombing the c**p out of mountain would do absolutely fukk all.... The French and the Brits werent able to conquer the Afghans in the 19th Century, the Soviet war machine was fought into the ground in the 1980s, just what the hell made us believe that things would be any different now....? The Taliban can sit up in the mountains and pick us off at will and there is bugger all our soldiers can do about it because they dont know the terrain. Another really great success story in the "War on Terror"...... <_<
