Posted June 5, 20169 yr 5th June 2016 It’s the Pet Shop Boys Burn-ing on top for a second week, and holding off the joint challenge of Jean-Michel Jarre (who they join with at 22 themselves) and Cyndi Lauper. That’s Jean-Michel’s 2nd number 2 39 years since the first, and Cyndi’s first in 32 years of trying. Sigma grab another top 10 with Cry, which also gives Take That another year of top 10’s 23 years since the first, Pray. Highest new entry at 26 is from an advert, Lemaitre turning up a year late in my chart, though not as late as another advert song, at 99, for The Vogues - Five O’Clock World was an American 60’s hit that flopped in the UK, but one which I regularly used to hear on Florida’s then-60s-oldies radio station on my regular Florida holidays in the 90’s. The advert reminded me I never did manage to find a compilation CD in the States with it on, so it’s in my download basket right now. Talking of the 60’s, I can’t understate my surprise to see a new album turn up from The Monkees. It’s literally been 30 years since their last one, and that was basically just Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. The new one has the late Davy Jones on an unreleased 60’s track, but otherwise features Micky, Peter and Mike “Michael” Nesmith - and a host of guest stars writing them songs. Best of the tracks are the ex-XTC Andy Partridge song You Bring The Summer, in at 57, and a Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher joint 60’s psychedelic-sounding song, in at 39 for the fab gear Birth Of An Accidental Hipster. Now, 49 years ago I was a pre-teen, and I was mad on The Monkees records and the TV sitcom-with-music quirky antics. The Beatles were fans, the press loathed them (being dicks) and a generation of musicians were influenced by them anyway, despite the snotty music critics. Cos they were genuinely good! So, 30 years since the first and last time they had a new track in my chart, they are back. The Monkees have topped my chart loads of times with oldies, though, starting in 1974, as their singles chart career just pre-dated my chart starting up in 1968.
