October 1, 200618 yr ARIA Chart Commentary from Gavin Ryan Five weeks and running now for Sandi Thom, who still wishes she was a punk rocker, although she seems to want flowers in her hair!. That single has now reached Platinum sales in Australia as of this week, which means sales of over 70,000 units. I was having a look at this decade as to how long female acts (this includes groups, duets & individuals) have stayed at No.1 per year, and here are the stats... 2000 - 25 weeks 2001 - 18 weeks 2002 - 26 weeks 2003 - 13 weeks 2004 - 20 weeks 2005 - 14 weeks 2006 - 22 out of 40 weeks So you can see that every second year this decade seems to be better for female acts, and with 12 weeks left to go for this year 2006 could beat the 2002 total if it continues on it's current path. A very slow moving chart this week, with only three new entries to the Top 50. The first comes from The Killers at No.17 with "When You Were Young". This song is currently sitting at No.2 in the UK, and it matches their highest peaking single "Somebody Told Me", which reached it's No.17 in September 2004. This is their fifth Top 50 single here in Australia, their others being "Mr Brightside" (No.29, January 2005), "Smile Like You Mean it" (No.47, May 2005) and "All These Things That I've Done" (No.42, July 2005). One of the summer anthems over 2005/2006 was Bob Sinclar's No.1 Australia single "Love Generation". He re-enters our charts for a third time this year with his new single "Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)" which debuts at No.25 this week. It features a sample from the C & C Music Factory tune "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" which reached No.3 in February 1991. And lastly, making their first chart entry for this year, and continuing their Top 50 streak of five years in a row, are the Basement Jaxx at No.39 with "Hush Boy". They first hit the national Top 100 back in 1999 with "Red Alert", but since 2001 they have placed a song in the Top 50 every year, and this becomes their seventh Top 50 single. The biggest so far was the track "Where's Your Head at" which reached No.16 in early 2002. Marking her half-a-year on the charts, P!nk takes her fourth album higher than all her previous by taking the No.1 spot in Australia this week with "I'm Not Dead". The third single off the album "U & UR Hand" is out Monday, and has helped boost the sales of the album as it's been played all over radio for the past five weeks. The album has been sitting at No.2 for the past four weeks, but I don't expect that it'll be there next week, as Jet's new album comes out today. It's the seventh week in a row that a new album has reached the top, although the last six all debuted at the top. The last time seven No.1 albums were at the top for a single week only was back between late-October and mid-December 2002, which included the culprits The Foo Fighters, Nirvana, U2, Pearl Jam, Shania Twain, John Farnham and finally Avril Lavigne who then stayed at No.1 for seven weeks. This is the 535th No.1 in Australia, and the 192nd by an American Artist. It's also the 113th by an American Performer, and the 25th by an American Female Performer. Pink also becomes the 67th Female to hit the top of the Australian Album Charts. It's the fifth album to hit No.1 with the words 'I'm' and 'Not', but the first album with the word 'Dead' in it's title. The last 'I'm' and 'Not' album was actually this year, The Arctic Monkey's' album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", which was at No.1 for a week in the last week of February. The highest new entry on the charts is actually a re-entry. And the last two weeks I've mentioned about Robbie Williams have three, then four albums in the Top 50. Well this week he makes it five albums, as his No.3 album from December 2001, the Frank Sinatra influenced album "Swing When You're Winning" comes back into the charts at No.11 giving Mr. Williams five in the Top 50 this week. He also has another one climbing the charts just outside the Top 50, and the only one missing so far is his 'Greatest Hits' package, but with all the other albums charting, there's not really much point buying that one for the extra two tracks. The highest new debut this weeks comes in at No.29, "Duets: An American Classic" by Tony Bennett. He was last in the Top 50 back in 2002 with his duet album with k.d. Lang "A Wonderful World" which reached the Top 30, and stayed on the charts for over 20 weeks. This was also helped along by their tour for the album. Tony first appeared on the Australian singles charts back in December 1951, with his No.1 single "Because of You", and he went on to amass 4 No.1 singles, including "Cold, Cold Heart", "Rags to Riches" and "Stranger in Paradise". Another chart veteran makes his debuts this week. Elton John debuts at No.37 with "The Captain and The Kid", his first appearance since November 2004's "Peachtree Road" just climbed into the Top 50. It's his 43rd charting album, and he first made the albums charts back in February 1971 with his self-titled album which reached No.2.
October 1, 200618 yr First Ever Australian Performed No.1 happened this week, back in 1955, and it knocked Rock Around the Clock off the top spot.
