Well, I sincerely hope that anyone who watched the Panorama programme last night will think twice before ever defending this disgusting man and his disgusting Church ever again..... It really is quite disturbing to think that the public face of the Catholic Church as a Cardinal/Vatican "Enforcer" went around threatening to excommunicate people who might have repeated allegations of child abuse by Priests to the legal authorities....

Absolutely disgusting, as if the interests of the bloody Catholic Church should be put before the welfare of children..... I care not if he himself never committed such abominable acts upon children, as far as I'm concerned if you actively cover it up, then you're just as guilty as the abuser himself. How much damage has he done to the lives and psyches of these young victims of abuse, how much damage has he done to the families..? Oh, but then, what the fukk does a Catholic Priest actually know about raising a family....?

This man is a fukkin' disgrace, time for him to go, hope somebody shoots the fukker...... <_<

Disgusting hypocrisy, they cover up for paedophile Priests, and then condemn consentual homosexual relationships between adults.....

Have these "allegations" been proved? I think one has to be considered inocent before the contrary is proven.

Oh, and here we have our resident Defender of the Faith.... You know, you really need to learn to be a hell of a lot more critical of your 'wonderful' church and see through it for what it is... <_< There is so much evidence to support allegations of cover-ups in the Catholic Church that there are about 1100 active investigations of child abuse in the US ALONE involving Catholic priests..... It's a little bit more than just fukkin' hearsay....

I notice you're not quite so reluctant to be critical of 'other' faiths considering some of the posts you have made in the past.....

Typical Religious-type really, so quick to see the faults in other beliefs, so blind to the faults of their own....

And I think the Pope standing trial for perversion of the course of justice, depraved indifference, promoting child abuse and wreckless endangerment of children is about as likely as Tony Blair and George Bush standing trial for War-Crimes - the establishment protects these VILE individuals..... <_< <_<

I dont follow a relgious faith... I think I've made my general disgust of organised religion no matter what the denomination pretty clear.....

And dont give me this 'oh, but science is a religion too' guff, because that is blatant rubbish.... Science is based upon Empirical facts, research and opens itself to far more self-criticism and analysis..... Science admits itself that it doesn't have all the answers, whereas religions ludicrously claim that they do know all the answers; Science is a continually evolving process based upon universal truths whereas religion is stuck in a dogmatic cul-de-sac from which it seems unwilling or unable to move from....

Go for it, blast away....

:o I didn't know this.

I didn't like the man to begin with, but now I just depise him. -_- I did like the last Pope though.

Is this the current pope?

There were allegations like this over a decade ago (which prompted that famous Sinead O'Connor performance) but obviously there was a different pope at that time.

Yeah, it's Ratzinger, the allegations made on the prog were to do with him when he was a Cardinal, no doubt doing the previous Pope's bidding....

It has nothing to do with religion, but every person is innocent until proven the contrary, that´s one of the basic principles of our civilization. Can you write down a list of priests who were PROVEN to be involved in this cases and were not punished by the church? Excommunion is an eternal sentence, wouldn´t it be unfair if one was punished and then discovered he was not guilty?

Too bad I am not a catholic to fit in this typical religious-type. I just think anyone, from any religion, should be considered innocent until the contrary is proven.

I think I've made my general disgust of organised religion no matter what the denomination pretty clear.....

So we agree on this one...

I think it's pretty bloody obvious the Catholic Church as an Institution is guilty of this and MANY crimes against humanity, it doesn't take a court of law or legal proceedings to see it.

Like I say, George Bush and Tony B-Liar will NEVER stand trial for war-crimes either (because they are protected by the establishment and because the West dominates the global political scene), but, let's face it, we all know damn fine that they're guilty as sin, and they're a pair of crooked liars, we dont need a fukkin' court case to tell us....

And, erm, you missed the point I was making with the whole 'excommunication' thing, it wasn't the Priests who were threatened with it, it was the kids and their families who were threatened with it if they went to the police, by Vatican "Enforcers" who wanted to hush-up the allegations.. Like you say, to a devout Catholic Excommunication is worse than death, the Church representatives knew that, acted like some kind of religious wing of the sodding Mafia, and used it as a weapon to shut people up, basically, they were blackmailed. Utterly VILE..... <_<

Still, not as if they haven't preyed upon people's fears, insecurities and gullibility for almost a THOUSAND FUKKIN' YEARS is it....?

The Catholic church is in HUGE trouble in the western world right now. Over the past two thousand years, they've had a steady supply of gay males to be priests, but now that these people are able to live their own lives openly in society, there are literally NO priests to go around. Something like half the Catholic churches in the US will have to close in the next 10 years because the number of priests is falling rapidly as they all die and there are no people left in seminaries to fill their place.

And oh yes, the paedophile coverup. Pathetic and disturbing. Now churches left and right here are being sued and they are all going backrupt on top of freefalling membership and zero priests to go around.

They had such an opportunity in choosing a new pope to make some changes, to reform. They really ****ed it up. Electing a hard-line wacko to continue screaming like a maniac as the church continues down the path to irrelevancy.

Well put Consie...

Y'know, I reckon if I was a predatory Paedophile, I'd definitely apply to a Catholic seminary and become a Priest... Seriously, think about it, I seriously doubt that prospective Priests have to go through the sort of stringent police checks that people who live in the real world do when they want to apply for a job working with kids...

And, yes, access to all these impressionable, fresh-faced kids... You can do pretty much what you want, and be pretty safe in the knowlege that the worst the Church will do is slap you on the wrist and send you off to do Missionary Work in Africa or Asia, where you'll probably have access to even more kids and even less chance of legal consequences. But hey, who gives toss about little black or brown kids yeah....? <_<

Could you imagine what would happen if there was even the slightest allegation against a Muslim Cleric....? I dont think there would be too many people pontificating about their rights.....

Probably the person who lifted the allegation against the Muslim Cleric would already have been exploded with everyone else around her.

And the worst part is... the paedophilia issue is just the most recent challenge to the church's moral authority. It is something the Catholic church has claimed since the middle ages and educated people are FINALLY beginning to question it. Suddenly catholics are saying "Wow, the bishop continued to allow sexual molestation... and wow, that new Dan Brown book says the Vatican threw out a bunch of gospels and might be lying to protect its own power... and wow, etc. etc. etc."

And instead of reforming, instead of bringing the church back to the people... instead of facing the world's real problems of poverty and disease... they'll go on rambling about the evils gay marriage and stem cell research until the entire west just dismisses them and they run to Africa for the next century.
