Sad but true. Her fanbase is also dwindling and it's hardly surprising given how lazy she is when it comes to her career (I say this as a fan).

Doesn't help that Radio 1 are refusing to support her. If Anne-Marie or Dua Lipa released this exact song, they would be all over it. Shame.

Because R1 are ageist towards her. Then again, Justin Timberlake is older and they support his songs

Beyoncé is just as old as Britney Spears and she still gets support, so it's got nothing to do with ageism. Her music just isn't relevant to radio 1 listeners.
Beyoncé is the exception rather than the rule though. Her and Sia seem to be the only older females to get support. Make Me... is just as current as their songs but they are under the impression she is totally irrelevant and I am sure age is a factor in that.
I wouldn't say Make Me... is flopping just yet. Let's wait until after the video has debuted to make our minds up! It's just had 6 dark green updates on Kworb and is up to #63 on iTunes from around #80 this morning. On Spotify it's risen everyday since Saturday.
I don't think ageism affects Britney just yet as she's still quite young. She's just seen as irrelevant in the UK as she hasn't had a hit here in a very long time.

I agree it's not so much ageism for Britney, in pop terms she's a popstar of last generation... like Madonna, like Kylie, like Christina, like J-Lo.

I don't agree it's a case of her music being "irrelevant for Radio 1 listeners" either, it's just how it is... Radio 1 won't play these people regardless of their output.

^^Thats about right Radio 1 for one support New artists and try and boost them, especially if they are British whereas Britney is looked at as a Noughties star now and her new song is ok but nothing worth them supporting her for another era.

Radio 1's music policy has been flawed since 1994. now they have to abide by BBC trust which insists on it's youth policy too.

Radio 1 wanted to remove Drake One Dance because 15 weeks was classed as "old" and they are "a new music station" so if Drake is old hat after 15 weeks what does that say about Britney.

Well Make Me definitely isn't Music or Believe or Cheap Thrills or any other huge hit by "older pop star"

It's just a cute song by a personality who is more of a celebrity than a pop star.

It's a bit of both I think. Britney is seen as a nostalgia act to Radio 1 listeners (And UK radio in general), she is indeed lumped in with the other's Aly mentioned. But at the same time, male popstars don't suffer in the same way. Look at Justin Timberlake for example, he had full on support from the moment his song was released, and he came around at the same time as Britney and she's probably had more hits!

I can see why Pretty Girls and Work Bitch might not have gotten support from Radio 1, but they stopped supporting her with Till The World Ends which was a monster hit in the US, selling 4 million copies, so it doesn't really make sense. And I'd argue 'Make Me' sounds more at home on the Radio 1 playlist than JT's or Katy Perry's singles (which will be supported). It's getting significantly more support in the US than her previous few singles, and it's obvious why from hearing it.

But would people of all age go crazy when Make Me is being played like the go when people played Get Lucky, Happy or even CSTF

The song is not a proper global hit in that sense and that what she'd need to be on the top of the charts. Just like J.Lo with On the Floor or Pharrell with Happy

Make Me is clearly aimed to please people in their 20s and nobody over 40 will ever request for it

It's not a gender thing at all

Radio 1 have a long history of being less supportive of older women, so I don't think you can really claim that. Even if there is a lot of other things to factor in.

It wouldn't be as big as those songs, but I'd say it could easily be as big as something like say 'Hands to Myself' by Selena (here) for example.

But that exactly proves the point: Britney has made a song for young audience and you can't really blame young audience for NOT listening it performed by a star who was big before the listener was born

To get the attention, the song must be a huge universal pop banger (a la Scream and Shout or Happy or On the Floor or Uptown Funk). So it's not IMPOSSIBLE for older acts to get hit but they must also cater all audiences with that song. And Make Me doesn't do that, it caters only the young audience. Even Selena Gomez don't get huge global hits, they are all mid sized because they are for certain audience only.

(I like Make Me myself, but I have followed her career and think it's among her 30 best songs)

But you could say the same about the Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Justin Timberlake, Craig David or lots of other artists that were around in the same era.

I do think, however, that if Make Me were to be a hit, that they would actually playlist it though. Like if it continues to do well in America or if it becomes a streaming it.

I don't think it can be a hit, if by a hit we mean a song that different kinds of people like and will probably remember. (Happy, made by a 40-year old male artist or Cheap Thrills, made by a 41-year old female artist)

I don't think it can be a hit, if by a hit we mean a song that young audience will love and listen to repeatedly (Into You, made by an 23 year old female artist)

It can be a hit in a niche pop orientated demographic who are familiar with Britney Spears's work already but even there I don't think it will have the same impact that Work Bitch had which did quite well.
