1960s Top 40 Rate

Number 14s and Number 18s

While there were several different UK singles charts during the 1960s (with the NME weekly chart being the most widely followed), the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles and, subsequently, the Official Charts Company use the Record Retailer chart as their reference during this period, so that's the one we'll be using here. The 'Official' Singles Charts, as we know it, didn't begin until February 1969.

These series of rates will cover March 1960 (when the chart expanded to a Top 40 for the first time) to December 1969.

Below is a chronological list of all the singles which peaked at No.14 and No.18 in the UK during the 1960s. Rate your faves, and the winner will go through to the final Ultimate Top 40 (where it will join the best No.1, No.2 etc).

So it has :o Although it looks like I've made a few mistakes with these 60s threads - Lorne Greene's Ringo has also appeared twice, and I've accidentally left out a couple of major classics in the No.11 and No.30 rates  (Both peaked higher in subsequent decades) I'll let you work out those. All I can say is erm...oops

no worries, I'm sure I would have missed loads! It's a big job! If they peaked higher in later decades...?

Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf?

Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf?

Yep, that's one of them.

The other - the No.11....I'll give you a clue - it made the top ten twice in the 70s

Not sure what to do about these. Wasn't going to bother with the No.41-50 rate due to there being only 4 of us voting, but maybe honorary auto qualifiers for the two I left out?

re Steppenwolf, yes that would be fair, it's certainly one I would rate on top of the 30 list. The other one, well twice in the 70's ooh I should know that one... Leader Of The Pack! Yes that's a guaranteed 11 winner I'd say, certainly runner-up - a choice between Jackie Wilson, and at 30 Booker T. Steppenwolf less likely I guess as rock not that popular generally with all 4 of us.

...and at long last I rate the novelty records higher than anyone else, the fab Allan Sherman and Peter sellers :cheer:
