This week's highest climber comes from singer/actress Hailee Steinfeld. Staving, the third single from her Haiz EP, debuted at #27 last week and jumps 23 places to #4 this week to become by far her highest charting single. It is the first chart entry for joint lead artists Grey, as well as being Zedd's fourth top 10 hit.

Isac Elliot climbs to #1 on the album chart with his new EP A Little More, as well as making a huge re-entry on the singles chart with Worth Something. The song became Isac's 6th top 10 hit since 2013 earlier this year, and the EP has become his second #1 album this week. Current single What About Me is making slower progress, up 2 to #23 this week, but as you can see from his chart history below, he's very inconsistent with single peaks, some not even charting!

Also this week, Britney Spears achieves her third #1, and G-Eazy his second. She blocks 5 Seconds of Summer from nabbing their first ever #1, and instead they have to settle for a second #2 song for now. They could climb up next week although they have strong competition from Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber & MØ, who make an instant impact at #14 this week and are certain to climb next week. I will touch more on this song next week when it's had a full week of impact!

 

MØ has another new song entering in the top 20 simultaneously with Cold Water. Final Song enters at #19, and is the follow-up to the #8 hit Kamikaze. Her peak position to date, however, comes from Iggy Azalea's #2 hit Beg For It, on which she was a feature.

 

Making their chart debut this week are Catfish and the Bottlemen, with Soundcheck, the lead single from sophomore album The Ride. I heard this song months ago and ended up forgetting it existed despite liking it! :heehee: Better late than never of course. However, this week's highest new entry comes from Banks (pictured), with her first entry in my chart. Fuck With Myself debuts at #12, and would likely have made it higher if it were not such a competitive week.

 

No strangers to the chart, we also have new entries from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, AlunaGeorge and Tinashe. The latter two have both reached the top 10 within the past year - AlunaGeorge made it to #5 with I'm In Control and Tinashe got to #6 with All Hands On Deck. Sophie will be looking for her first top 10 hit with Come With Us, which for now enters at #25.

Britney's done it again and released another top-notch lead single. 'Make Me...' is so cool and seductive with the right balance of being current and in keeping with what makes Britney, Britney. I love G-Eazy's rap too; it's the first time I've really felt is presence has been valuable to a song. That said, I'd probably only place it higher than 'My Prerogative' and 'Hold It Against Me', maybe '3', in regards to her lead singles, but that's just credit to how strong they all are.

 

I'm really starting to get into 'Rise' now. Something rather different from her and certainly not what you'd expect her to return with; I get that it's not actually the lead single but it's still what was chosen as her comeback and I believe will be on the album. Nevertheless, it seems to have done alright so far and shows that she can pull off a big, anthemic song of this style where vocals are heavily relied on. Will be interesting to see how it translates live though.

 

Can't tell yet how much I like 'Cold Water'; I definitely like it but whether I'm going to be crazy about it or still like it in a month's time is another matter. I suppose that's partly down to it sounding like 'Waves' which I definitely did tire of quickly, but then it feels like there's more to this than there was to that and Justin's vocals suit the song well.

Make Me... really does sound like a current smash hit, it's such a shame that her name basically translates as "BLACKLIST ME" to Radio 1 :drama: G-Eazy's rap is really great, it reminds me a bit of how A$AP Rocky's verse in Good For You lifts the song for me. I do actually like G-Eazy's parts in You Don't Own Me, I think they add a bit more substance to the track. But yeah, Britney really does have an amazing catalogue of lead singles. I'd definitely place it above 3 and Hold It Against Me, probably Me Against the Music and My Prerogative in time!

 

I was hoping for a big pop smash for her comeback track, I must admit, but Rise is great and she can carry off a fantastic vocal performance which people don't tend to give her credit for. I can see it making the album too, even if it's not the lead single, a bit like Love Me Like You Do for Ellie last year. I'd like to see it become another big hit for her!

 

I can't get enough of Cold Water right now, I'm not sure it's better than Light It Up (my fave Major Lazer song) but the mix of the guitar verses and the breakdown section go very well together, and Justin's voice is perfect for this kinda song. Much better than Waves for me but that's probably down to the vocalists! :heehee:
