Lily Allen wins web music award

Lily Allen raised her profile on the internet

Pop star Lily Allen and the rock band Muse have both triumphed at the fifth annual Digital Music Awards.

Newcomer Allen beat Sandi Thom to take the best pop artist prize at the award ceremony in London.

Muse collected two trophies - beating Hard-Fi and Kasabian to best rock artist and their fansite was named best unofficial music site.

Thom Yorke scooped two awards. Other winners included Lemar, The White Stripes and Peter Gabriel.

Radiohead frontman Yorke took the awards for best use of mobile and best artist campaign for his solo album The Eraser. It was released in the UK in July and was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize.

Mobo winner Lemar, whose big break came on the BBC talent programme Fame Academy in 2002, scooped best urban artist. He beat Nate James, Plan B, Sway and The Streets.

This year the Pioneer Award was introduced which Peter Gabriel won

The Streets did not leave empty handed with Mike Skinner winning best blog, while the award for best artist promotion went to the White Stripes for Denial Twist project.

It was a memorable night for Gabriel who was presented with the Pioneer Award for his contribution to digital sales over the years.

The inaugural best unsigned artist award was won by three-piece group The Wonderfuls.

Artists who took to the stage to perform included the hip-hop star Plan B, who did an acoustic version of his song No More Eating and Rock School's Lil' Chris sang his hit single Checkin' it Out.

Other performances included James, Thom and winners in the best electronic artist/DJ category, Lorraine and Captain.

Members of the public had a say on who won 13 of the 19 awards, with 500,000 people voting online. A panel of six judges chose the remaining award winners.

The Digital Music Awards have become increasingly popular as more bands and artists rely on the internet and mobile phones to promote themselves.

Allen had thousands of so-called "friends" on the networking site MySpace before her first single was even released.

Last year Gorillaz and Coldplay were the big winners. The awards will be broadcast on Channel 4 on October 21.
