1960s Top 40 Rate

Number 17s

While there were several different UK singles charts during the 1960s (with the NME weekly chart being the most widely followed), the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles and, subsequently, the Official Charts Company use the Record Retailer chart as their reference during this period, so that's the one we'll be using here. The 'Official' Singles Charts, as we know it, didn't begin until February 1969.

These series of rates will cover March 1960 (when the chart expanded to a Top 40 for the first time) to December 1969.

Below is a chronological list of all the singles which peaked at No.17 in the UK during the 1960s. Rate your faves, and the winner will go through to the final Ultimate Top 40 (where it will join the best No.1, No.2 etc).

Thanks again for the votes. As ever, we start with those no-pointers:

Buzz Clifford - Baby Sittin' Boogie

Buddy Holly - Reminiscing

Crickets - My Little Girl

Chris Sandford - Not Too Little - Not Too Much

Shadows - Genie With The Light Brown Lamp

Jim Reeves - Is It Really Over

Paul & Barry Ryan - I Love Her

Only 7, a rarity for the 60s rates (mind you, there are only 4 of us voting  )

And the others:

2. Petula Clark - I Know A Place 47

3. Supremes - Love Is Here And Now You're Gone 45

21. Cream - Strange Brew 11

29. Shadows - Mary Anne 3

30. Jim Reeves - When Two Worlds Colide 2

hooray! The Fabs have to be in the list at least once!

It's a great chart overall, with many of them bigger hits in later decades, or in covers, literally only a handful of them have never been covered or reissued hits, so pretty much an accurate rundown of greats
