73. COLLIDE- Leona Lewis/ Avicii (51,913) #4

Up to this point Tim Berling hadn’t had a top 40 single under his “Avicii” name but the controversy over Lewis and Syco using his track “Penguin” without authorisation it was claimed. Naturally as the first release from a new album Lewis was keen to have a substantive hit to lead the campaign and once the matter was cleared up with a joint credit sales seemed to indicate all was well though by the time the album saw the light of the day this version of the track was replaced.

Though it peaked at No 4, these sales were actually achieved in its debut week when the song arrived at No 5! A new single from their second album perhaps helps to explain the high sales and the promo features Bono’s daughter. It’s who you know you see.

It isn’t quite “End Credits” but then what is. This single came with a gloriously early 90s themed promo and also became the 362nd (approx) top 10 single to sample Loleatta Holloway’s “Love Sensation”. It remains their joint highest peaker and in a couple of weeks of the year could have gone much further with those sales.

“On The Floor” and “Party Rock Anthem” stopped it going top 2 but “E.T” came with guest rap with Kanye West and a promo which collected MTV video awards for special effects. In the US it gave her a fourth straight No 1 and though it didn’t do as well here those sales are impressive.

69. THE HILLS- The Weeknd (54,724) #3

One of the biggest new acts of last year The Weeknd may have had two No 3 hits but only one sold enough to make the top in any week of the year, this track. It actually sold more in the same week as Adele and Justin Bieber went head to head each recording 6 figure openings so no surprise that it dipped 3-5 whilst increasing sales!

Tomorrow we move on those tracks which could have topped the charts in at least 3 weeks of their respective years!

The Saturdays 13th and final top 10 hit is up next and actually sold a rather respectable amount for a No 5 hit as we move from 2 weeks to 3 potential weeks that it could have entered at the top. A glut of promotion accompanied the release along with the usual Buzzjack commotion.

Robin Thicke- check, Daft Punk- check, Passenger-check , Naughty Boy- yes all present, virtually an A-Z of 2013’s biggest hits stopped Olly scoring an impressive No 1 with this. That would have been his 5th chart topper but he’s still waiting!

Becoming his first top 5 single in 5 years “Jealousy” was a return to chart fortunes for Young when released in 2011. It was released simultaneously with the album “Echoes” which sped to No 1, that may have detracted sales from the single though clearly it didn’t do badly despite that.

I never thought of Blind Faith as having any particularly strong sales, it was released in January when sales are notoriously low as well :o That would've been an amazing number 1, if only they'd picked August to release it instead :kink:

A return to the top 10 after two and a half years missing, Clarkson performed the track on X Factor which gave it the boost needed to climb 6-4 to record this sale, it’s actually more than she sold to top the charts back in 2009 with “My Life Would Suck Without You”.

Lana never sold more copies of any single in a week than she did of this in its third week at No 4, not bad considering that the record company didn’t like the mix of the song done by Cedric Gervais, only becoming convinced after it started to garner radio support and making the dance charts.

Updating Lesley Gore’s 1963 US #2 hit was an inspired idea and so was getting Quincy Jones in to produce it as he’d also done the original. Topping the Australian charts in May 2015 it was helped to its peak after being performed by Lauren Murray on last year’s “X Factor”.

Originally looking like her 5th No 1 single when it topped initial sales flashes this track ended up falling behind Tinie Tempah and Lost Frequencies as the week progressed. Co-written by Kate Nash it previewed Ora’s second album which has been delayed to record label issues.

61. WHERE DEM GIRLS AT- David Guetta Featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida (55,959)

David_Guetta_-_Where_Them_Girls_At.jpg

Back in the days when Guetta dominated the charts, this spent a fortnight at No 3 actually increasing its sales in its second week to this total though it actually fell further behind the chart topper (10k to 12k) as it sold more. The power of Bruno Mars and LMFAO combined to bar his entry to the top 2.
