UMK 2017 will be a one night affair, consisting of 10 acts rather than the 18 acts spread across 3 semis like previous years. Krista Siegfrids has been confirmed as the host of the final to take place on 28th January, with the 10 finalists to be announced on 23rd November.

Hopefully Finland can make it to the final again after two very disappointing years.

I'm expecting one of either Benjamin or Isac Elliot, probably more likely the latter.
Part of me wants Benjamin to do it. The other doesn't because too many thirsty gays will be claiming him when he is mine. :P

If Benjamin can deliver another 'Young & Restless' then yes please!
*just gonna mention all the countless Finnish bands I need to show up and have this country send in lieu of rubbish twinks who'll just give them a third non-qualifier*
  • 2 weeks later...

Alva: Arrows

Anni Saikku: Reach Out For The Sun

Club La Persé: My Little World

Emma: Circle Of Life

Günther & D'Sanz: Love Yourself

Knucklebone Oscar & The Shangri-La Rubies: Caveman

Lauri Yrjölä: Helppo elämä

My First Band: Paradise

Norma John: Blackbird

Zühlke: Perfect Villain

Links to listen to the songs can all be found currently on this page

It was in the topic and I completely missed that they were actually releasing the songs before December. :o Guess I'll actually start early with the NF appreciating. Assuming they do have good songs here, which... they'd better. So far it's not promising.

Oh Ryan is going to DETESTE Club La Persé, so naturally they must win

Club La Persé and Gunther are good cheesy/tacky songs and at the very least should provide a touch of visual spectacle *.* Of the mainstream ones Emma is probably the best of the lot but I strongly suspect they'll go with My First Band.

On the whole a bit of a disappointing line-up.

Circle Of Life has some really good bits in it, I'd be fine-ish (i.e. not really) with that, even if it's a little plain for the type of song it's trying to be - certainly the best of the female soloists, they have no strong suits there (although that X-Men one is a bit like a tamer Porcelain Black and could be another one for the Eurovision Lyrics Hall of Fame). Club La Persé/Gunther/that Caveman song, they're fun and aren't explicitly bad, in fact I kinda like Caveman, but I can't see them getting anywhere... it might be good to get a novelty entry in the field early though.

Oh and I don't condone My First Band. Unless they pull a Softengine and it grows on me fiercely but I don't think that's likely. Those lyrics are dire and cringey and the backing is a half-hearted attempt to sit between guitars and tropical house. Nuh-uh.

Yeah, not a good show Finland.

I've only listened to 5 so far. My favourite is Emma as of course she fits into "manic pixie dream girl" perfectly alongside the likes of Emmelie de Forest, Maria Olafs, Greta Salome & co. I agree with Iz that it may be missing that extra little something, but that could come with the stage performance and she is currently the fan favourite at the polls so it's looking good for Emma.

Norma John is very Norway, I'm not sure if it is just *too* subtle but I do like the Secret Garden-esque (as I've seen it described) instrumental around halfway in. They will need to make the staging magical and not boring. I also really like My First Band. It's not really tropical and it isn't pop-rock either, in fact it would fit perfectly on DNCE's new album - that funky-pop sound. They are my second favourite of the five I've heard so far.

My third favourite is Alva which is standard scandipop, with a Phoebe Ryan-esque vocal. It's not particularly special, but it is pleasant. I don't think it has the character that Emma's song has though and I can't see Alva being the top female soloist here. That takes us to my least favourite: Gunther. I turned this off after a minute so maybe it picks up and/or is a guilty pleasure like Feel Da Rush (Freddy Kalas), but it was tacky, dated and had a strong accent by scandi standards. I know he is Swedish, but is he a Fennoswede? If so then he will unfortunately go in with a very strong voting base.

Summary:

1. Emma

2. My First Band

--

3. Alva

4. Norma John

--(big gap)

5. Gunther

The top 4 all range from nice to very decent. It's a surprisingly "Danish" offering from Finland though and Saara Aalto or Mikael Saari would have walked it this year.

After several plays of each, here's my current rank.

01. Club La Persé - My Little World

02. Günther & D'Sanz - Love Yourself

03. Norma John - Blackbird

04. Emma - Circle Of Light

05. Zühlke - Perfect Villain

06. Alva - Arrows

07. Lauri Yrjölä - Helppo elämä

08. Knucklebone Oscar & The Shangri-la Rubies - Caveman

09. Anni Saikku - Reach Out For The Sun

10. My First Band - Paradise

Yes the cheesiest, tackiest two songs are my favourites, shock horror! I'm sure we're in for some iconic, hot mess performances come January. Both would be killed by the juries at Eurovision but surely it's better to send something that will stand out to potentially attract enough televotes than the bland 'Sing It Away' we got this year. 'Caveman' has a good chorus, but the verses really let it down and stops it from joining the top two in a trio of tackiness. Of the more serious entries I do really like 'Blackbird', it has the potential to do well I think, providing they stage it right.

Like others have said, Emma's song is lacking something for me as well and joins the pleasantness of Zühlke and Alva. 'Helppo elämä' is like a mix between 'Heroes' and 'Heartbeat' but that would do bugger all in Kyiv. I always struggle to remember how 'Reach Out For The Sun' goes so that doesn't bode well. My First Band is bloody awful, I'm not here for Maroon 5 lite at all, but I just have a terrible feeling Finland are probably going to pick them.

Saara Aalto for Suomi Saviour 2018 basically.
