October 11, 200618 yr Pretty much accurate, I think him getting rid of Beckham was a cynically judged smokescreen to make England fans think that McClaren is his own man, you can just picture the thought-process "I'll get rid of Beckham and that'll make people think I actually have my own ideas and I'm not just recylcling Sven's style of managing....". Wrong! He is the lazy choice really, someone like Martin O' Neill would surely have been a better pick... Exactly what is his problem with Walcott anyway...? Or is that just another bit of misdirection on his part...? I'd never really thought of the Beckham debacle as a smokescreen before, but yeah, you could be right. I doubt he'll bring Beckham back now anyway.. his confidence must be in tatters by now And Walcott i'm not so sure about. In McLaren's defence, Walcott hasn't started for his team, so starting for his country could be a huge risk, and it's one that's unlikely to pay off big time. But then at the same time, if he doesn't try the kid out, how can he possibly judge how well can play? Like I said, McLaren is all over the place. And I completely agree about Martin O'Neill. If not him, then surely to god Allardyce or Curbishley would have made far better replacements than McLaren ever will?! It all hangs in the balance of how well we play tonight...
October 11, 200618 yr If not him, then surely to god Allardyce or Curbishley would have made far better replacements than McLaren ever will?! Hmmm, isn't there some rather dodgy allegations about Sam Alladyce going around at the moment, isn't he the subject of some investigation or other at the mo...? Choosing him would be suicide for the FA until these issues get cleared up.... And could you imagine the sh!tstorm around just now if the FA actually had chosen Alladyce....
October 11, 200618 yr I never wanted McLaren as England boss. Why did the F.A. appoint someone that was England assistant manager alongside Sven who was $h!t. So we haven't changed, it's basically Sven still incharge. And his squad selections are terrible. Downing, Pennant and SWP over Beckham. Crouch ahead of Walcott (despite not playing regually, a better player than Crouch), Bent, A. Johnson and Defoe. He says he chooses on form but he clearly doesn't, otherwise Lampard, Robinson ( I don't think should get dropped though), Downing, Carragher, King, SWP etc...

Yes, but Allardyce was actually one of the favourites to be picked for the job.. this was last year, before all the bung allogations arose Bung or no bung, he's still a far better manager than McLaren
October 11, 200618 yr England are really hanging on by the thread of their teeth at the moment. :arrr: I'm thinking were gonna get beat by Croatia. :(
October 11, 200618 yr Croatia are 1-0 up now. :( Half and hour left still and this might give England a kick up the backside now so we can save at least a point.
October 11, 200618 yr Oh god, it bounced over his foot. Edited October 11, 200618 yr by chap stick
October 11, 200618 yr 3-5-2 really isn't working. Its time for some changes now, theres 20 minutes left and there still time to salavage a point, but we really need to change back to 4-4-2 now.
October 11, 200618 yr Awful, awful, awful. I really hope that Steve McLaren is not England's manager (before our away fixture against Israel in 2007) after this latest 2-0 defeat to Croatia. This is England's heaviest competitive defeat since losing to Holland in 1993, when managed by Graham Taylor. What summed up his management skills was his three substitutions, whilst keeping the injured Ashley Cole on the pitch. England now have no pace, no quality crosses or set-pieces, no ideas & no clue what they are doing. In the space of three months they have become a shambles. But that is all thanks to his PR Guru Max Clifford (who previous clients included Rebecca Loos and Posh & Becks former-nanny).
