ARIA Chartifacts 09/10/06

from ARIA.com

Well Sandi Thom keeps her hold of the No.1 spot for a sixth week, and she

also talks about a revolution in the air in 77 and 69. Well there has been a new

revolution of sorts on the charts around the world over the past year, and this

week sees Australia's turn at the digital download revolution.

The chart dated October 9th, 2006 is the first time that the physical

singles sales and downloads have been incorporated into the National Australian

chart. Such a chart has been used in England and the US since early 2006, and

this week Australia follows suit. The reason it didn't happen sooner in this

country is that major download companies did not start operating download sites

until perhaps six months ago, and during that time the download system has been

growing at a fast rate. ARIA did their first download chart back in mid-April

2006, and now this week sees the incorporation of those figures into the

national charts.

Other changes in the past to the charts have happened in...

1955 - First 45rpm single reaches No.1, "Rock Around the Clock"

1957 - chart is now 90% 45rpm sales, with 78rpm's now almost non-existent.

1975 - Cassettes were incorporated into the national album sales.

1985 - CD albums were included in the album charts, and in 1986 CD singles

were added.

1991 - the death of vinyl, with record companies no longer making 7inch and

12inch records

on a mass scale, as CD's take over the market, with Cassingles

also making a big impact.

1997 - ARIA start doing electronic sales via stores computer systems, making

for a more

concise chart.

2006 - the UK and US markets start using download information in their

charts, as more than

60% of the market is now downloaded.

With the advent of the physical and download sales, some older titles

re-enter the charts as they are strong downloaded songs. Five songs re-enter the

Top 50, the highest being at No.23, the former No.6 single for Eskimo Joe "Black

Fingernails, Red Wine". At No.26 is current Australian promo-tourists Panic! At

the Disco with "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies". Also re-entering due to a tour are

the Dixie Chicks who's "Not Ready to Make Nice" which comes back in at No.34.

Also back is "Crazy" by Gnarls Barclay at No.36, and at No.48 is "Flaunt it" by

TV Rock (which could also be re-entering due to their new single, but more about

that soon).

The highest new entry comes in at No.6, "U + Ur Hand" by P!nk. It's the

third single off last week's No.1 album "I'm Not Dead", and becomes her 12th Top

50 single, and her 9th Top 10 hit. It's the follow-up to "Stupid Girls" (No.4)

and "Who Knew" (No.2, No.15 this week).

A couple of climbers this week, with Scissor Sisters jumping up to No.3 with

"I Don't Feel Like Dancing", and gaining their first Top 10 single at No.10 are

The Killers with "When You Were Young", who's album is detailed below.

With Panic! At the Disco in Australia for a promo tour, their album "A Fever

You Can't Sweat Out" climbs to it's highest peak so far of No.11, and the second

single off the album debuts at No.21, "But it's Better if You Do". As I

mentioned above their previous single re-enters the charts at No.26, having

originally peaked at No.12.

Sean Paul hit No.6 in July with "Temperature", and this week he follows that

up at No.24 with "(When You Gonna) Give it up to Me". Featuring the vocals of

Keyshia Cole, this is a former No.3 single in the US, and his sixth solo

Australian chart entry.

Coming in at No.37 is "Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)" by French

DJ/Producer/Remixer David Guetta which is a mash up track with The Egg. At the

heart of the track is 'Walking Away' which began life two years ago as a laid

back ballad from cult French group The Egg. This new track was featured in a new

series of TV commercials in Europe for Citroen cars, and is a current Top 5 ARIA

Club Chart track.

Right behind David at No.38 is "Bimbo Nation" for Australia's TV Rock, this

time featuring the vocals of Melbournian Nancy Vice. Their previous single

"Flaunt it" was No.1 for five weeks, and spent 21 weeks in the Top 10, the first

time since 1997's "Breathe" that a track has spent so long in the Top 10.

In May 2005, three albums debuted in the Top 3 positions, and this week it

happens again, this time it's by three rock artists.

Debuting at No.1 is the second No.1 album for Evanescence, "The Open Door".

Their previous album "Fallen" was No.1 for 3 weeks in January 2004, and featured

the No.1 single "Bring Me to Life". Well this new albums features the current

No.7 single "Call Me When You're Sober", which peaked at No.5.

It's the eighth week in a row that we've had a new No.1 album in the

country, and it's the first time that the words 'Open' and 'Door' have appeared

in the title of a No.1 album.

Debuting at No.2 is the new album for The Killers, "Sam's Town". Their

previous album also reached No.1, back in February 2005 for a single week, and

the new album features this weeks No.10 single "When You Were Young".

The third of the Top 3 debuts is the second album for Jet, "Shine On". "Put

Your Money Where Your Mouth is" is the lead single off this album, and is

sitting at No.19 for a second week. Their previous album "Get Born" was a huge

album, reaching No.1 for two weeks in May 2004, and becoming the No.1 album of

2004.

All three artists have all reached No.1 before, they all took 30 or more

weeks to reach that No.1 spot, and they all achieve Gold or Platinum status in

their first week, with Jet being the Platinum shipped one.

Their is a fourth Top 10 debut this week, coming in at No.6 is Marcia Hines'

"Discotheque", an album of covers from the Disco era. As the female judge on the

Australian version of Idol, her profile has been lifted quite high over the last

couple of years, and to see when she last hit the Top 10 in Australia, we have

to go back to the era that she is covering on this new album, the 1970's. In

1978 she last hit the Top 10 with "Marcia Hines:Live Across Australia", it was

her third consecutive Top 10 album, following on from "Shining" (No.3, Nov 1976)

and "Ladies and Gentlemen" (No.6, Aug 1977). She did hit the Top 10 for a fourth

time in early 1982 when her "Marcia Hines Greatest Hits" compilation hit No.2,

but this is her first new studio album since 1978 to hit the Top 10.

Further down the chart, "Weird Al" Yankovic makes his sixth appearance on

the albums chart, and also his second highest placing on the charts so far.

"Straight Outta Lynwood" debuts at No.27, and beats the Top 30 album "Running

with Scissors" (1999) and is one shy of the No.26 peak (but No.27 debut) of his

June 2003 album "Poodle Hat".

Beck also returns to the album charts this week at No.31 with his new album

"The Information". It's his seventh album to chart, and his first since 2005's

"Guero" which debuted and peaked at No.14 in the last week of March.
