Origin

Fallen

The Open Door

I haven't listened to TOD yet (I'll be hearing it today!) but I can't even decide if Fallen is better than Original lyrically. I think their best lyrics are the ones that didn't make the cut like Breathe No More and Missing.

The Open Door in my mind has better lyrics, although some of the early stuff was stunning aswell and like you said 'Missing' and 'Breathe No More' are gorgeous.
Origin, it's a fabulous album, cost me £30 but it's amazing . Missing is one of their best songs!

Breathe No More

What a truly amazing song that is.

My Immortal <3

Oooh, i love 'So Close' and 'Solitude'

theyre some of my fave songs by evanescence.

theyre loverly :D

"Origin", closely followed by "The Open Door"; "Fallen" is a bit too.....'cliched' in the lyrics dept, it's like they'd listened to all the right albums and were just ticking all the "goth" boxes tbh - 'self hatred' - check, 'depression' - check, 'feeling suicidal' - check, 'anger and bitterness' - check, 'religious iconography' - check......

Origin and TOD are albums that have more of themselves invested into them, more of the personal, less of the 'expected'.....

Hey Everyone, I'm new here. So thrilled there's a section on Evanescence, I'm a HUGE fan.

I'd say Origin has the best lyricst tbh. I know it's their earliest work, but some of the lyrics in songs such as Anywhere, Field of Innocence, Missing, Breathe No More are amazing.

Fallen had some damn good lyrics too, and so does The Open Door. It's hard to say which is better out of those two, but Origin is a clear favourite to me.

Really? Personally I was bothered by the number of love songs on The Open Door. I connect to Fallen much, much better lyrically... even if the subjects are cliched, the writing is impressive and a lot easier to relate to. Depression (one of the "cliched subject") can come from break-ups too. But once the song is just about breakup (CMWYS, Lacrymosa, etc) it's just not as strong to me. :(

Your Star, Lose Control and Good Enough are just terrible lyrically. Sweet Sacrifice isn't all that either.

I guess my expectation were crazy after Origin and Fallen, but so far I don't find the lyrics on TOD (those that I'm able to make out anyway) to be as appealing as Origin and Fallen

the open door or fallen....hmmm such a tough choice

My favourite lyrics are in the songs:

Field of Innocence

Anywhere

Forgive Me

Missing

Breathe No More

All That I'm Living For

The Last Song I'm Wasting on You

Surrender

Where Will You Go

Like You

So, most of their earlier stuff. So, Origin for me,

Fallen for sure!

Lyrically, "The Open Door" is leagues ahead of "Fallen". I have been able to connect with the lyrics on a much deeper level and I think that a lot of the words are more finely textured and Amy Lee has really come into her own style.

My few of my favourite lyrics from the album...

Stay low

Soft, dark and dreamless

Far beneath my

Nightmares of lonliness

- Like You

Lock the last open door

My ghosts are gaining on me

- All That I'm Living For

Undress in the dark

And hide from you

I can't escape the twisted

Way you think of me

I feel you in my dreams

And I don't sleep

- Snow White Queen

Shouldn't let you torture me

So sweetly

Now I can't let go of this dream

- Good Enough

I dream in darkness

I sleep to die

Erase the silence

Erase my life

- Sweet Sacrfice

Selfishly hated

No wonder you're jaded

You can't play the victim this time

- Call Me When You're Sober

Exactly mate, they dont sound like some pissy, bog-standard Nu Metal band whining a load of pathetically stereotypical teen angst anymore, they're finally following up properly on the groundwork laid in "Origin"... "Fallen" is clearly Ben's album, which Amy has moved on from....

I don't understand how people can like TOD better lyrically. Different strokes, but aside from Your Star and Lithium, the writing lacks metaphors and is too simple.

Track 1 on Fallen:

Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies

So I don't know what's real and what's not

Always confusing the thoughts in my head

So I can't trust myself anymore

Track 1 on The Open Door:

you poor sweet innocent thing

dry your eyes and testify

you know you live to break me- don't deny

sweet sacrifice

Track 2 on Fallen:

Now that I know what I'm without

You can't just leave me

Breathe into me and make me real

Bring me to life

Track 2 on TOD:

You never call me when you're sober

You only want it cause it's over

It's over

Track 3 on Fallen:

Look here she comes now

Bow down and stare in wonder

Oh how we love you

No flaws when you're pretending

But now I know she

Never was and never will be

Track 3 on TOD:

Feels like the weight of the world

like all my screaming has gone unheard

and ohm I know you don't believe in me

safe in the dark, how can you see?

Track 5 on Fallen:

If you wanna live, let live

If you wanna go, let go

I'm not afraid to dream

To sleep, sleep forever

Track 5 on TOD:

Long lost words whisper slowly to me

Still can't find what keeps me here

When all this time

I've been so hollow inside

TOD is just too simple lyrically imo.

It might seem simple on the surface, but in my eyes when you really analyse the meanings with the words in all makes sense and it all comes alive in the most beautiful and amazing way possible.

I'm tired now so I won't go into now but tomorrow I'll prepare for another long Evanescence essay by me. My favourite things in the world to write!

To be honest, I could do exactly the same thing you've done to prove the strength of "The Open Door" over "Fallen".. Clever bits of editing and quoting doesn't make the argument true (you could probably extend this principle to literature and somehow 'prove' that Barbara Cartland is a better author than Emily Bronte or Jane Austen. I think we all know that this simply isnt the fact..), you're taking parts of lyrics out of their wider context..... Like Natalie says, you have to see the bigger picture and analyze things in their proper context... And the bigger picture clearly marks out "The Open Door" as being the far stronger album both lyrically and musically...

It might seem simple on the surface, but in my eyes when you really analyse the meanings with the words in all makes sense and it all comes alive in the most beautiful and amazing way possible.

That's exactly how I see it too. Lyrics aren't neccessarily about writing the most complex and metaphorical words (although when done well, something amazing can be created), it's about getting a message across to the audience. As Natalie said, you can delve into the lyrics on 'The Open Door' and find so much.

For example, 'Good Enough' is amazing lyrically because it's relatively simple, but amazingly deep. The line 'So take care what you ask of me / 'Cause I can't say no' implies to me that she wants her current boyfriend to propose, and that's what makes it so damn beautiful.

Maybe I look too deeply into things, but I really do think 'The Open Door' is lyrically superior to 'Fallen'.
