"It's times like this I feel tricked into waking up"

5 Jamie T Trick

The evolution from Jamie's older work is made abundantly clear on the intense and heavy first cut TINFOIL BOY BOY BOY BOY BOY BOY *.* (Drone Strike delivers an equally big and bizarre chorus that might take some getting used to). High points from 'Trick' include the washed-out rock anthem Police Tapes, and depressive ballad Sign Of The Times focusing on the changing face of his home city (e.g. "losing venues to businessmen") but still a number of good poppier cuts make up the tracklist such as Tescoland & Robin Hood, and you'd be hard pressed to find a stickier chorus than the one on Dragon Bones!

4 Beyoncé Lemonade

Can't say i'd been too excited for a Beyoncé album before but singles Formation and Hold Up changed all that- i waited to see if this would land on spotify, to no avail but i just decided to buy it eventually anyway. For which i'm thankful, the main 'angle' of this thing seems to be about a relationship turmoil between Beyoncé and her husband- Hold Up is really effective at capturing anger, insanity and a willingness to sort everything out all in a bright reggae-tinged bottle. From there we get many a big moment- the crazed vocal on Jack White collab Don't Hurt Yourself, the incredibly moving ballad Sandcastles ("we built sandcastles that washed away" </3), not to mention the more defiant tracks like 'Sorry', 'Formation' and the empowering 'Freedom' (i'll delve more into this one on my singles chart) really seal this together as a must-listen!

"Get up get up, what's that in the sky? Could it be? It's KKB!"

3 Kero Kero Bonito Bonito Generation

Shit's gettin real now, it's KKB let's go~! it's been a long journey from trifoski hit 'Sick Beat' in late 2014, but last year's single "Picture This" was the first dose of what was to come, the only ode to selfies and photography you'll ever need. A string of singles lead into the technicolor package we know now as BONITO GENERATION! it's almost like there's a relatable for every occasion: "Heard A Song" paints the dilemma of hearing a tune you like but didn't quite catch the name -_- "Graduation" should've been around for MY graduation so i could've done an impromptu performance *.* "Hey Parents" is of course a rather lovely message to her parents (tho the way she says "did you keep my ROOOOM?" is kinda low-key hilarious). And "Break" reminds us all to take a break, and eat a kit kat, every so often- it's important. Pop fans you must not sit on this, the whole thing's on youtube so stop slouching and give it a spin!

"In the seconds after blast, a dead man's gun lays in the grass"

2 Thee Oh Sees A Weird Exits

"Mutilator Defeated at Last" was probably one of my "summer fixtures" when it came to 2015's albums, it soon brought me onto some great earlier records of theirs ("The Master's Bedroom" is a lot of fun and must be heard), but perhaps 2016's "A Weird Exits" was the moment it all clicked. Dead Man's Gun heavily resembles Mutilator album opener Web's stop. start. voc. al. del. iv. er. y. Ticklish Warrior cranks the fuzz up to 11 and it's glorious, Jammed Entrance throws this weird squiggly instrumental at you while Gelatinous Cube packs everything you could want in a hard-hitting but still accessible garage rock track. They certainly don't forget to shift the pace, like with the closing two tracks- the ultra gloomy Crawl Out from the Fall Out portrays a hopeless post-apocalyptic wasteland and The Axis is a brilliant (i think?) over-the-top finale with snarky lyrics and a shredding guitar solo that rips the track to pieces and close out the album <3 I could post an individual track but instead chose to put the whole album for you to hear. You probably won't, but you definitely should x

(cheers to The-BrightPlaces for getting me a vinyl copy of this beauty for xmas btw )

1 Lemon Demon Spirit Phone

enter Sir Neil Cicirega, the internet marvel behind The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, Potter Puppet Pals, and a full album project of "All Star" mashed with a bunch of other songs (yes really)

It's his first album in a while under the "Lemon Demon" alias, but i hadn't any knowledge of that prior to coming across classic BJSC hit "Touch-Tone Telephone", which is obviously the best song ever conjured by man. Plenty of good things were being said about Spirit Phone so inevitably i dove in~

Spirit Phone is a triumph in every way; soaring 80s synths? opener "Lifetime Achievement Award" has em in droves, along with a very amusing tale about a dead popstar being reincarnated good as new *.* (could be a take on Michael Jackson and the 'XSCAPE' album? straight up namedrops him in the song so it's not unrealistic). "Soft Fuzzy Man" is an IRRESISTIBLE synthpop track, with an post-chorus refrain, and the final portion of the track may just be one of the most orgasmic musical moments of 2016. Great hooks? basically everywhere, but Touch-Tone Telephone, Reaganomics and I Earn My Life if you want the cream. Engaging stories? try Cabinet Man's tale of some guy whose soul ends up encased in an arcade machine- he's everyone's favourite, the king of the arcade but years later is left to rot by the pesky concept of handheld gaming, damn :( and "When He Died" is like a crime/horror story put to a cute twinkling instrumental. Something weird? "Sweet Bod" is a delicious sex jam about unearthing your dead body and coating you in honey (for medicinal purposes, obviously). It's a chaotic but fun listen (there's obviously a few less in-your-face moments, like the beautiful ballad track No Eyed Girl) and this whole album is basically my singular ANTHEM of the year. good luck matching this one 2017 x

(brownie points for the bandcamp download coming with a handy lyric sheet for my ipod !)

Awesome to see 24K Magic so high - highlights of that album for me are Chunky, Perm, Versace On The Floor and of course the track named after the album title.
Lemonade is a really decent album, I much prefer it to her self-titled album actually. Some really catchy tracks, and I agree with most of your highlights for sure!

Lemonade is a really strong album! I think it is up their with I Am Sasha...Fierce for me  I love Don't Hurt Yourself its so powerful

Jamie T - Trick is really good too although his last album was WAY bettter imo
