I realise that this could be a discussion for the forum as a whole but I wanted to focus it on the indie/alternative/rock fans really.

 

Do you collect physical media?

 

I've grown up in the download/streaming age, really, but I have recently been getting into physical media. I only collect CD's (not managed to get into vinyl just yet!) and I absolutely love have the object in my hands. I go searching in charity shops, music stores, car boots etc. when I have the time. Yeah, a lot of what I'm after could be purchased online much quicker and easier but where is the enjoyment in that?! I just love finding something I've adored or something new in physical format.

 

Some of them are out of necessity; Joanna Newsom's catalogue is not available on Spotify so I decided to find it in physical format.

 

I've come across some really obscure stuff in the last 12 months or so. Locally, I've managed to get stuff from Broken Social Scene and Caribou to three Postal Service singles and Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins. I'm always amazed by the variety of stuff I find.

I wouldn't say I collect physicals (anymore) but part of me would love to start doing it again because of the sentimental value and rarity of it and stuff. I do still sometimes pop into CD shops if I'm close by and do get physical CDs occasionally if the album is not available to me in other formats, or if I want to get a signed copy lol, which I did for one CD recently.

i only buy vinyls now. i've kept like 20 of my good cds and chucked the rest cos they're just a waste of space.

As much as I adore Spotify, for me you cannot beat having a physical copy of something to own! I have a few vinyls but CDs are still my favourite format and I often buy compilations and albums I really enjoy in physical format.

aye i can see that. a few of mine were now dance 2000 type cds that i just couldn't throw away for nostalgia. but the rest were from the last 10 years that i can just stream now. also i have no way of playing cds but have a vinyl player so it's a no brainier.

I purchased Kendrick's 'Good Kid, MAAD City' album yesterday and took it home to find a Kings of Leon CD in there... guttted.

 

I mainly play CD's in the car nowadays. I have a Spotify account as well but there's something about having the CD which makes the music sound more... real ... in my imagination anyway!

Yes! I do collect physical media. Mostly CD and vinyl, sometimes cassettes.

 

I purchased Kendrick's 'Good Kid, MAAD City' album yesterday and took it home to find a Kings of Leon CD in there... guttted.

 

I mainly play CD's in the car nowadays. I have a Spotify account as well but there's something about having the CD which makes the music sound more... real ... in my imagination anyway!

 

LOL this happened to me twice, involving 7-inches from my parents' collection.

 

I requested a 7-inch of REM's The One I Love from the collection to be delivered to my house, only to find a promo 7" of The Only Ones' Another Girl Another Planet in the sleeve (though I'm glad that I'm a proud owner of a rare promo 7")

Another time, I requested a 7-inch of The Smiths' What Difference Does It Make from the collection, only to find a 60's pressed 7-inch of Roy Orbison's Oh Pretty Woman in the sleeve (though I'm amazed at the fact that the 7-inch was pressed a long long time ago and the Orbison song is good)

 

Even though vinyl is one of the best things I've experienced, it does have its fair share of cons.

 

I never really stopped buying records but I'm pleased at the number of opportunities there are to browse them now that "vinyl" had made a comeback. I recently started getting into jazz so have enjoyed looking for old records from the 50s and was really pleased to get a copy of Burning Beat by Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa for a pound in Groucho's in Dundee.

 

As for CDs, I've also stripped my collection right back to about 100 tops - and even those I very rarely look at. Mostly kept for sentimental reasons (the memories associated with the physical disc than the music on it).

 

Do people really call records "vinyls" though? Jeez....

Jazz is cool.

The two jazz records I have are Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue and John Coltrane - Blue Train (both were from a Deagostini Magazine that came out early 2016 focusing on jazz musicians)
