Did you see the ultimate reality tv star results poll in this forum. I didnt vote because its unimportant - but

quote Graham - no.11 Darius - 4.63%.

Still loved by his legion of erm adoring fans, the scottish wonder had five top ten singles in the UK. he inflicted cheese after cheese upon us (but I did love live twice) not bad success for someone who was drafted into the pop idol final ten after Rik waller was arrested for robbong Tescos delivery truck on the m.1 Where is he now though. In our hearts always.

I didn't vote either and that write up is exactly why I didn't bother. I won't play their stupid games. I just don't give a damn!
If it's pop forum, I just don't go there. I know what I like. The kind of attitude on that forum, just leaves me not wanting to bother.

Total waste of energy.

Did anyone from here vote? Pip did you fly the forum flag for the sake of it?

Only those who know something of the depth and versatility of D's music appreciate him, but I'm comfortable with that now. If anyone wants to know about him, they know where we are. If they don't, their opinions mean zilch to me. It's their loss.

If more of us had voted, then he would have been higher than 11th and they would have less fuel for their fire!! :D I can't help myself, if I see D in a poll I have to vote for him just so that people realise he is still around and well thought of (especially on here!! ) There are more posters on this Board who appreciate Darius than you realise and for some reason just don't like to publicise it in case they are ridiculed by their pals!! Even Graham had to admit that he loved 'Live Twice' So, despite it sometimes falling on 'deaf ears', I will always 'fly the forum flag'!!

It's that "cheese" thing that really irritates me. What the heck does it mean? No-one seems capable of explaining why they describe D's music like that. They just do it.

Tbh, julie, if we'd all voted and he'd been number 1, the write up would have been no different and it would have been dismissed as a fix because we did. It's OK for fans of other artists to vote for them but it never is for us. That's why I rarely bother with anything in the popforum now.

I have asked lots of times what people define as 'cheese' and no-one seems to know!! It seems to me that if a handsome man releases a track (whatever genre!!) and he gets up someone's nose because he is just so good-looking, then that person will define his record as 'cheese'!! I don't think I've ever heard the word 'cheese' in relation to a female recording artist - unless, of course, anyone knows different!!)

I know, Baytree, I totally agree, the write-up would probably have been worse!! It's just that if I didn't vote for D I would feel like I had let him down  - and I could never do that!! :D

I think it'smaybe one of those terms that used to have a clearcut definition and was used sparingly but has become distorted and now is simply used as a derogatory term to be "in" and belittle a person and or his/her achievements.

For example, Steps were one of the most successful bands in the UK and while they were on top, everybody praised them loudly. Now Pop is uncool, their legacy has been revised and suddenly most posts you see contain the word "cheese". Their material is no different just the attitude.

Actually I've just seen a thread in the Pop forum where tigerboy is asking what people's favourite cheesy songs are, so I've just asked him to define what cheesy means for him.

Edited by Baytree

Well now we know.

sappy; overly dramatic, emotional, clichéd or silly

Thanks, to Suggy for the definition.

I think we can dismiss silly - none of D's singles indeed none of his songs have near nonsense, repetitive lyrics. Me I'd put most US RnB in this category but nobody ever calls that cheesy.

None of his singles are overly dramatic either.

Cliched - some people might make that a criticism of Rushes because he does use a couple in that and there's the rushes/blushes/touches thing too. But I think they're wrong. He wrote it when he was sixteen and he didn't make it more sophisticated because it's supposed to reflect his naivity and his discomfort around the opposite sex at that time.

Emotional/sappy - here I suppose it's a case of degrees of emotion. One man's sappy is another's poignant. Live Twice could be under fire for that and yet how could the song truly reflect what he was feeling when he wrote it, unless it was emotional.

Edited by Baytree

I would say all songs are emotional - most of them are based on love, which is the biggest emotion of all!! As I posted in the Pop Forum, I suggest that most songs can be described by at least one of the 'cheesey' definitions!! :D

:( I didnt vote but only because I dont go in the pop forum and didnt know about it.

I am like you Julie I would have had to vote if I had seen it.

If people don't like an artist they'll find reasons to use derogatory words about absolutely anything he/she does. Look at James Blunt - the same people who were raving about him and banging on about what a fantastic artist he was, are now badmouthing him and the songs they loved so much, on the very same forums as their adoration. It's crazy!

It's a pity people like Graham who at least appreciate that Live Twice was a good song, haven't a clue that Darius has already released many similarly strong songs. It's just that Mercury chose not to put them on a-sides or in some cases not even as tracks on the albums.

If you want to kill me kill me.

I just try to make the results interesting so it's not DULL and BORING like half the stuff on this site.

I never said I hate Darius or wished death upon him did I?

Sorry, why would I want kill you, Graham?

Your poll was interesting for those who wanted to take part in it. I wasn't concerned enough to bother.

I am however entitled to make comment on things posted in this DD forum, am I not? It's an open forum. You are welcome.

Well I apologise if I caused any offence.

Offence? You'd need to be much ruder!

Other people's opinions of Darius won't change mine.

Edited by davinza80

No offence taken and no apology necessary, Graham.

Your comments were mild compared to many. I just don't like to hear anything other than novelty records being callously dismissed as cheesy. I don't like it when it's used about other artists, not just Darius.

I believe Darius has always been very underrated; you don't rate him at all. That's life. Music is very subjective. Vive la difference!

I didnt even see the poll - and to be honest, I wouldn't waste my time.

I think the trouble is people buy into things because they are told so often it is brilliant..becuase everyone else bought it so it must be good.. in the cold light of day this oftne dies down and you see a song for its stand alone merits.. I mean how many of us bought into green platforms and massive bell bottoms because that was all you could get and everyone had them...as soon as they went out of fashion we all binned them as quickly as possible wondering what on earth possessed us.. :D luckily I have never been sheep, oops - a fashion victim. well not that much..

Darius's songs stand on their own merit to me, songs I still love and genuinely "Want" to listen to again and again..I wonder how many people are still constantly playing James Blunt?
