1 Pink - What About Us

So Pink scores a number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart again - with "What About Us"! Her first chart-topper was 16 years ago, back in 2001 - "Lady Marmalade", her collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya. A year later, in 2002, Pink had her first solo number 1 - "Get The Party Started". 2 more chart-toppers followed - "Stupid Girls" and "So What". There was no European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013, otherwise Pink might have had 2 additional number ones - "Blow Me One Last Kiss" and her duet with Nate Ruess, "Just Give Me A Reason".

1 Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do 1 Up

"What About Us" falls to number 2 after spending 2 weeks at the top. In fact, most of Pink's number ones have spent fewer than 3 weeks at the top...

Taylor Swift scores another chart-topper wirth "Look What You Made Me Do". She reached number 1 with "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" in 2014. The most interesting case is "Bad Blood". The song did appear in the chart (judging by the corresponding editions of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"), MTV Europe just never played it! It supposedly spent one week at number 1... however, unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch that particular edition of the chart! I will always wonder whether MTV Europe played "Bad Blood" at least during that edition... or they skipped the number 1!?...

2 Zayn & Sia - Dusk Till Dawn

1 Pink - What About Us 1 Up

"What About Us" returns to number 1 - this is its third (nonconsecutive) week there. Of Pink's singles, only "Get The Party Started" has spent more weeks at the top of MTV Europe's European chart - 4.

Zayn scores his third number 2 hit with "Dusk Till Dawn" - the previous 2 were "Pillowtalk" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" with Taylor Swift (whose "Look What You Made Me Do" was last week's chart-topper but is now a place below Zayn and Sia). Could "Dusk Till Dawn" finally give Zayn a number 1?

And MTV Europe finally played "Sun Comes Up" by Rudimental and James Arthur - weeks after it appeared in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"...

"What About Us" by Pink is at number 1 for a fourth (nonconsecutive) week. Thus it equals the 4 weeks spent at the top of the chart by "Get The Party Started" back in 2002.

It's also notable that MTV Europe played 2 songs by Avicii - "Without You" and "Lonely Together". Usually when there are 2 songs by the same artist in a particular edition of this chart, MTV Europe just play one of them...

This is the tenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

"Too Good At Goodbyes" returns at the top for a second (nonconsecutive) week. Sam Smith's only other chart-topper - "Writing's On The Wall" - spent a sole week at number 1 so at least by this metric "Too Good At Goodbyes" is now his biggest chart hit.

I had a feeling this would happen! "What About Us" by Pink is back at number 1 for a fifth (nonconsecutive) week - a total accumulated over 4 separate runs at the top! Thus it improves on the achievement of "Get The Party Started" by becoming Pink's first song to spend 5 weeks at number 1 in this chart! She first appeared in the chart with "There You Go" back in 2000... Well, Pink has waited for 17 years to score her biggest hit!

This is the eleventh time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

MTV Europe played just 8 songs from the Top 20 during this edition of the chart. I don't think this is acceptable. For example, I really don't understand why the keep on skipping CNCO's "Reggaeton Lento" when they could play the version that is a collaboration with Little Mix. After all, they did play both "Despacito" and "Subeme La Radio" - and their videos are the versions which are only in Spanish!...

This is the twelfth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

"Your Song" by Rita Ora reached number 2 in the chart earlier this year. Now "Anywhere" does one better by jumping from number 27 to number 1... The problem is that I don't think this is deserved (at least yet) - apart from the UK, the song isn't having success anywhere in Europe so far...

This is the thirteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

N*E*R*D* are back in the chart after 13 years. They appeared a couple of times - with "She Wants To Move" (which puzzlingly went as high as number 2) and "Maybe".

...And this all happened in 2004 - a year before their collaborator in their current single "Lemon" made her debut in MTV Europe's European chart... Rihanna would go on to become the most successful artist in the history of the chart - no one else has scored as many number ones...

Yet there is something even more remarkable in this edition of the chart - MTV Europe finally played "Mi Gente"! Although it could be said that it's offensively late - the song has already left the Top 20 and, judging by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", it peaked at number 3...

It's a rare occasion to have a song not in English in this chart - and even rarer for the song to be in more than one non-English language! "Mi Gente" contains both Spanish and (a little) French. At the moment I can think of one other example - "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar and Lucenzo, which was in both Spanish and Portuguese...

This is the fourteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

Mabel, who appears at number 27 with "Finders Keepers", is Neneh Cherry's daughter. Neneh Cherry's last appearance in the chart (so far) was in 1996 - 21 years ago! - with "Woman". 2 years earlier she had a massive hit - her duet with Youssou N'Dour, "7 Seconds".

It's nice to see MTV Europe play "Katchi". Judging by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", Ofenbach's previous single "Be Mine" also reached the chart... but MTV Europe never played it!

...And it's not only that. They didn't show any of the songs placed between number 2 and number 5 in this edition of the chart. Those supposedly include "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, "Havana" by Camila Cabello and "Silence" by Marshmello and Khalid. All of these 3 singles have music videos so I don't see the reason why MTV Europe is skipping them. After all, isn't the point of the chart to SHOW the current biggest hits?!...

1 Ed Sheeran - Perfect

This is the fifteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

Let's look at the history of the singles from Ed Sheeran's latest album. Surprisingly, first "Castle On The Hill" appeared at number 1 in the chart but spent just a single week there... because it was immediately replaced by "Shape Of You"! The latter stayed at the top for 7 weeks.

Then came "Galway Girl", which "only" peaked at number 4... However, now "Perfect" becomes Ed Sheeran's third chart-topper from his current album!

This is the seventeenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

"Runnin'" by Naughty Boy and Beyoncé Knowles peaked at number 3 in this chart in late 2015. The last time MTV Europe played the song was during the chart of February 13, 2016...

...But now "Runnin'" reappears in the chart at number 30! However, it turns out that this is not so random. A few months ago "Runnin'" did re-enter the singles charts in France, Switzerland and Spain - and climbed as high as number 2 in the French chart!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED?

This is the eighteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.

There are some Christmas-themed songs from previous years in this edition of the chart. Just like last year, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "Last Christmas" make an appearance. Once again, MTV Europe played the So So Def Remix video from 2000 of "All I Want For Christmas Is You".

And "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid 30 is back for the first time since it topped the chart 3 years ago.

Back in the good old days of the "classic" MTV European Top 20 - the period of the chart which lasted until 2009 - there was a tradition for the last week of each year. Then a special edition of the chart would be broadcast which showed the 20 most successful songs during the whole year (how accurate that edition was is another question). However, the last time MTV Europe played such a special edition of the chart was in 2006...

Now, more than 10 years later, MTV Europe broadcast an edition of the chart for the whole year 2017!
