75 years ago: Vernon marries Gladys :cheer:

Today, exactly 75 years ago, Gladys Love Smith and Vernon Elvis Presley exchanged vows and got married. Gladys was 21, but she changed her age to 19 for the marriage certificate. Vernon was 17, but he added 4 years. The couple got married in Verona Mississippi. In December 1934, they moved to the 2 room shotgun house that Vernon and Vester had built, where one month later Elvis Presley was born. His twin brother Jesse died at birth.

On september 20th 1903, 105 years ago today, Robert ‘Bob’ Lee Smith and Octavia Lavinia ‘Doll’ Mansell married. Bob Smith was a bit younger than his bride, a very handsome lad with Indian blood flowing through his veins. On his jacket we notice something special, a ‘Grit’ button. Grit was the name of the local Sunday paper in Richmond. ‘t Was as if Bob knew that ‘grit’ (corn-based Southern U.S. food) was going to be needed for the rest of his life. After their marriage the couple moved in with his mother. Ten months later their First child, daughter Effie was born. The little girl died barely 14 months later. In 1906 and 1908 two other daugters were born, Lillian and Levalle. In 1910 Doll gave birth to a third daughter, Rhetha. By then the family had already moved to Pontotoc County. It was there that two years later, in 1912 Elvis’ mother Gladys was born. In 1915 and 1917 the family would be complete with the birth of two sons, Travis and Tracy. The same year the Smiths would return to Lee County. There Bob was know as a very gentle and devoted man. Although it was Doll who had trouble with her health, it was Bob who died first in 1932 from pneumonia. Three years later, in the year Elvis was born, his grandmother Doll passed away.

 

Besides al these facts that go along with this historical picture, we notice the resemblance of Elvis with his grandparents. The handsome looks, his good bone structure and black hair.

Yesterday, September 22nd, we remember the fact that 50 years ago Elvis left for Germany to begin his German 'tour of duty'. Shortly after losing his mother this must have been hard for him, leaving his country and friends behind. He does however meet Charlie Hodge, who will become a lifelong friend. During the last interview he expresses just how he feels about leaving his fans behind; “Despite the fact that I’ll be out of their sight, I hope I’m not out of their minds. And I’ll be looking forward to the time when I can come back and entertain again like I did.” On Wednesday October 1st at 8:46 A.M. the USS Randall arrives at Bremerhaven, where he is met by 1500 fans and an army of press members. :cheer:

Did Elvis have a half-sister? That's a question the Shelby County Probate Court has to answer. According to the site "DNA Testing Systems", Eliza A. Presley, asserting that her father is Vernon Elvis Presley, father of entertainer Elvis A. Presley, filed a petition today in Shelby County Probate Court to reopen her father's estate. Attorney Kathleen L. Caldwell of Memphis placed the five-page petition in the hands of the clerk of court in downtown Memphis at 10:25 a.m. (CDT). It was filed under docket number D-5830.

 

The basis of Presley's suit is as a "pretermitted heir." This term designates one who would likely stand to inherit under a will, except that the person who wrote the will did not know or failed to mention the party at the time the will was written. Evidence in safekeeping with the petitioner suggests that many people knew that she was Vernon Elvis Presley's daughter.

 

Presley, 46, was adopted at birth and just recently discovered that she is the daughter of Vernon Elvis Presley and hence half-sister of her father's famous son, Elvis, who died in 1977. The two have different mothers. Their father Vernon Elvis Presley was executor and trustee of his son Elvis' estate. Vernon Elvis Presley died two years later. Elvis Presley is known as the King of Rock 'n Roll and is celebrated as one of the greatest entertainers of all time. News of his death at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tenn., on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42 shocked the world. The only child of parents Vernon Elvis and Gladys Love Smith Presley of Tupelo, Miss., he left a daughter, Lisa Marie, by ex-wife Priscilla Beaulieu Presley. His will appointed as executor and trustee his father, Vernon E. Presley.

 

Vernon Presley had no other known children at the time of his death in 1979. A son, Jessie, the twin brother of Elvis, was stillborn, January 8, 1935.

A 46-year-old woman who claims to be the half-sister of Elvis Presley is asking a court to reopen the estate of the rock-and-roll legend's father, Vernon Presley, and to be admitted as an heir.

 

According to the petition filed in Shelby County Probate Court, Eliza Alice Presley said her mother gave her up for adoption at birth and that after a lifetime search she learned this summer through DNA testing that Vernon Presley was her father.

 

The divorced mother of four then changed her name from Alice Elizabeth Tiffin.

 

"I am 99.99 percent sure that Eliza Presley and Elvis Aaron Presley are half siblings and that she is not related to Elvis Presley's mother's relatives and that can only mean that they share a father," said Donald Yates, head of DNA Consulting in Scottsdale, Ariz., who said he has worked on the case for five years.

 

"There was no DNA from Vernon. The relationship has to be inferred from the DNA from other family members. We're talking about samples from an extended family group."

 

He said that included DNA from Elvis, but he would not elaborate on where or how that was obtained.

 

The attorney who handled Vernon Presley's estate was not available for comment and Kevin Kern, spokesman for Graceland, is traveling out of the country.

 

Vernon Presley died June 26, 1979, at age 63. Elvis died in 1977.

 

Probate Court Clerk Chris Thomas said Wednesday a hearing on the Texas woman's petition is set for next month.

 

"I've never had one where someone comes in after the estate's been closed almost 25 years," he said. "Most of the people involved are dead."

 

He said Vernon Presley's estate distributed a total of about $200,000 to his heirs and has been closed since 1985.

 

Vernon Presley was the executor of the Elvis estate, the bulk of which went to his only daughter, Lisa Marie.

 

DNA expert Yates said Eliza Presley's mother, Florence Juanita Sharp, lived across the street from Graceland as a teenager, but that little is know about how she might have met Vernon Presley.

 

He said Sharp moved to Pasadena, Texas, where Eliza was born Jan. 23, 1962, and placed for adoption.

 

Despite the petition seeking to reopen Vernon Presley's estate and be admitted as an heir, Eliza Presley's motive is not money, Yates said.

Today we remember the death of Dewey Phillips. 40 Years ago, on september 28th 1968 Dewey Phillips passed away. He was born on may 13th 1926, and was one of rock 'n' roll's pioneering disk jockeys. He started his radio career in Memphis at WHBQ-AM in 1949. For nine years he was the city's leading radio personality and was the first to simulcast his show "Red, Hot & Blue"on radio and television. On Thursday july 8th 1954 Dewey was the first DJ to play an Elvis record (That’s All Right). During his program broadcast on WHBQ, from the Chisca Hotel in Memphis. Gladys and Vernon were listening, Elvis himself was at the cinema. Because of the many request to play the song over and over again, there would be a live interview the same night between Elvis and Dewey. Late 1958 Phillips gets fired when the station adopted a Top 40 format, phasing out his freeform style. He spent the last decade of his life working at smaller radio stations. A heavy drinker and longtime drug user (mainly painkillers and amphetamines, which contributed to his manic on-air behavior), Phillips died of heart failure. After hearing of Dewey’s death Elvis tells a local reporter; “I am awfully hurt and feel very sorry about Dewey’s death. We were very good friends, and I have always appreciated everything he did for me in helping me in my career in the early days.” (‘Elvis, Day by Day’) On Tuesday october 1st, Elvis will attend Deweys’ funeral at the Memphis Funeral Home, where ten years earlier services for his mother were conducted. Just like Elvis Dewey died at the age of 42…

Mom says daughter is not sister of Elvis: Former Whitehaven resident Florence Clark says she spent some time at Graceland as a teen, but that her daughter most definitely was not fathered by Vernon Presley. Her daughter, Alice Elizabeth Tiffin, now 46, filed a petition in Memphis two weeks ago claiming to have DNA proof that she is Vernon's daughter -- and Elvis' half-sister -- and seeking to be named an heir. She recently changed her name to Eliza A. Presley.

In an intriguing twist her mother now says that her daughter, who she put up for adoption at birth, also used to claim Elvis was her father and that anyone with common sense would know both claims are bogus.

"There is no Presley connection," said Clark, 67, who lives in Oregon. "I would be rich if there was a Presley connection. Do you think I would walk away from that? Would any girl walk away from that if they had a child by Vernon or Elvis?"

Vernon Presley died in 1979 at age 63. Elvis died in 1977 at age 42.

In her Probate Court petition, Eliza Presley, who was born in 1962 in Texas, says she has DNA testing results that prove she is the daughter of Vernon Presley. She has been unavailable for comment, but Donald Yates, head of DNA Consulting in Scottsdale, Ariz., said he has worked on the case for the past five years and that he is "99.99 percent sure" that Eliza and Elvis are half-siblings and that Vernon is their father. Florence Clark said her daughter has known since age 19 that her father was another Memphis man - she moved to Texas when she learned she was pregnant - and that her daughter has spent time with him in the past. Clark said that as a teen she often hung out at the gates of Graceland and eventually met Elvis and joined his entourage on trips to the movies, to the

fairgrounds and to a skating rink. She said she also met Vernon on a few occasions, but that there was no romantic involvement with him or with Elvis, who she said used to call her "Brown Eyes."

"That man never touched me, not once, and I'll take any test in the world to prove it," said Clark, who is divorced and has three other grown children. "I have no motive for anything. I just know what the truth is. When she found out I knew Elvis, she started trying to put Elvis as her father. This is the first time I've heard about Vernon." A hearing is set for Wednesday in Probate Court.

Baby Pictures: Lisa Marie And The Twins :cheer:

 

The American glossy magazine People Magazine is going the publish an exclusive shoot with Lisa Marie and her twin baby girls in their next issue. The magazine is going to be available next Friday in the USA. Finley and Harper are 3 months old at the moment.

Lisa Marie Presley couldn't be happier with her twin girls Finley and Harper - because it took her two years to conceive.

Lisa Marie - daughter of legendary rocker Elvis Presley - gave birth to the girls in October last year.

And she couldn't have asked for more.

"I really wanted these babies," Presley, 40, tells People magazine. "My blood was too thick and would clot, which caused several miscarriages.

"The moment I took blood thinners, I got pregnant.

"I knew my family history - my father had a twin who died at birth, and my other grandmother also had twins.

"But at the ultrasound, the doctor goes, 'There's the heartbeat.' Then she says, 'There's another one.' I started crying, [husband] Michael [Lockwood] started crying."

Presley also opened up about losing her baby weight.

"I was unable to see my toes by the fourth month," she admits. "But I only gained 30 lbs. total. I worked out up until the seventh month."
