4. Randy Scouse Git - The Monkees

Released as "Alternate Title" over here as the UK record company were unwilling to put a record in the shops called "Randy Scouse Git". Mickey Dolenz chose the title after watching an episode of 'Till Death Us Do Part'. Alf Garnett used the term to describe his son in law. The song is chaotic and informal but in a good way. Like Procol Harum,The Monkees have celebrated their 50th anniversary with a new album and tour.

3. San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair) - Scott McKenzie

 

Peak position - 1

 

The summer of love anthem. It's a great song,I like the guitar work and percussion and I think I heard a sitar in the background. This was Scott's only top 40 hit.

Love pretty much all the chart - by this time I was 9 years old and very aware of chart pop music.

 

Up Up & Away, the Fifth Dimension version is much better, but the song was all over the place for a decade, adverts, TV links, variety shows before it fell out of fashion.

 

Even in the UK To Sir With Love was better known than the poor choice of A side, that was a very bizarre decision - at the very least they should have done a double A side....

2. It Must Be Him (Seul Sur Son Etoile) - Vicky Carr

 

Peak position - 2

 

The song and singer are both new to me. She sounds a bit like Cilla Black. This is a ballad with a slight jazz tinge to it. I'm not keen on it. She is of Mexican descent and is big in the Latin music world.

1. All You Need Is Love - The Beatles

 

I didn't know The Beatles were on Spotify. Their whole back catalogue is on there now. I like the string section and harmonies on this one. There's lots going on in George Martin's production. I'm not a big Beatles fan and this would not be one of my favourite songs of theirs.
