Ed Sheeran's 'Divide' Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200, 'Beauty and the Beast' Debuts at No. 3

3/19/2017 by Keith Caulfield

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) holds on to the No. 1 slot for a second week on the Billboard 200 chart, as the set earned 180,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 16, according to Nielsen Music. That’s down 60 percent compared to its debut frame, when it launched atop the list with 451,000 units.

÷ sold 87,000 in traditional album sales in its second week -- down 73 percent compared to its starting sales stanza of 322,000.

Sheeran’s album is the first in six months to spend its first two weeks at No. 1 on the chart. The last to do so was the Suicide Squad soundtrack, which debuted atop the Aug. 27, 2016-dated list, and spent a second week at No. 1 the following frame, dated Sept. 3.

The last album by an artist to spend its first two weeks at No. 1 was Drake’s Views, way back on May 21-28, 2016. (There have been albums that have spent multiple weeks in a row at No. 1 since then -- just not their first two. Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas debuted at No. 3, and later climbed to No. 1 for two straight weeks. The Weeknd’s Starboy opened at No. 1 last December, fell out of the top position, and then later returned to No. 1 for four consecutive weeks in January.)

A step below Sheeran on the new Billboard 200 is Metallica’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, which holds at No. 2 with 102,000 units (up 25 percent) and 100,000 in traditional album sales (up 26 percent). The set continues to profit largely from a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion with the act’s stadium tour that went on sale on Feb. 17. The tour starts on May 10 in Baltimore, Md., at M&T Bank Stadium. Redemptions of Hardwired included with the purchase of a ticket register as a sale in the week the customer redeems/receives the album.

Sheeran and Metallica lead a fairly quiet top 10, where only one album debuts in the region: the new Beauty and the Beast soundtrack, at No. 3. The companion set to the live action remake of the 1991 animated Disney film starts with 57,000 units (48,000 in traditional album sales). The album, which boasts the vocal talents of its cast (including Emma Watson) and recording artists like Ariana Grande and Josh Groban, easily surpasses the No. 19 peak of the animated film’s soundtrack.

It bowed at No. 146 on the chart dated Dec. 7, 1991, and eventually peaked at No. 19 on the April 18, 1992-dated tally. The set spent 76 weeks on the list and has sold 2.3 million copies in the U.S. It also housed a top 10-charting Billboard Hot 100 in its title track, as performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. The new album features a redux of the song, this time with Grande and John Legend.

Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic falls one rung on the Billboard 200 to No. 4 with 54,000 units (down 17 percent), while the Moana soundtrack climbs three spots to No. 5 with 52,000 units (up 32 percent). The album benefits from promotion related to the film’s home video release on Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD on March 7.

Future’s self-titled album dips from No. 4 to No. 6 with 50,000 units (down 4 percent), The Weeknd’s Starboy is steady at No. 7 with 44,000 units (up 4 percent) and Migos’ Culture falls 6-8 with 42,000 units (down 4 percent).

Future’s HNDRXX descends 5-9 with 39,000 units (down 21 percent) and the Trolls soundtrack closes out the top 10 with 32,000 units (down 12 percent).

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Trolls' Soundtrack Hits Half-Million Sales, Elliott Smith's 'Either/Or' Debuts

3/22/2017 by Keith Caulfield

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 1), Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) held firm for a second week atop the list, earning 180,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 16, according to Nielsen Music. Just one album debuted in the new top 10: the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack at No. 3.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

— Soundtrack, Trolls – No. 10 — As the Trolls soundtrack (No. 10 on the Billboard 200) sold another 19,000 copies in the week ending March 16, according to Nielsen Music, the set’s total sales pass the half-million mark (to 513,000). It’s the second soundtrack released in the past 12 months to cross the sales threshold, following the Suicide Squad album (536,000). Meanwhile, the Moana soundtrack (No. 5) is heading towards half-million mark, too: its sales climb 28,000 (up 37 percent) to 410,000 in total.

The Trolls soundtrack has benefited from a flurry of promotion in the past two months. It was released on digital home video on Jan. 24 and then reached DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 7. A few weeks later, on Feb. 26, Justin Timberlake opened the Academy Awards with a performance of the film’s best original song-nominated tune, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

— Soundtrack, Nashville: Season 5, Volume 1 – No. 65 — The first CMT-aired season of the musical drama series sees its companion album bow with 8,000 equivalent album units earned (5,000 in traditional album sales). ABC aired the show for its first four seasons.

The new set is the 11th charting Nashville-related album on the Billboard 200, following eight earlier soundtracks (two from each of the four seasons), a Christmas album, and a live release.

— Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Getaway - No. 104 — A number of titles earn gains on the chart — including offerings from Blake Shelton and Fleetwood Mac — as they profit from sale pricing and promotion in the iTunes Store. The retailer’s All-Time Essential Albums program features discounted albums (for $7.99) and is promoted on the front page of the iTunes Store. Among the charts gainers included in the promotion: Red Hot Chili Peppers’ The Getaway (a re-entry No. 104 with 6,000 units; up 89 percent, and 5,000 in sales; up 154 percent), The Rolling Stones’ Hot Rocks 1964-1971 (re-entering at No. 106 with 6,000 units; up 67 percent, and 3,000 in sales; up 295 percent), the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack (187-95 with 7,000 units; up 55 percent – all from album sales), Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (131-88 with 7,000 units; up 29 percent, 4,000 in sales; up 61 percent) and Shelton’s If I’m Honest (100-69 with 8,000 units; up 22 percent, 4,000 in sales; up 36 percent).

— Elliott Smith, Either/Or: Expanded Edition - No. 173 — For the first time in nearly 10 years, Elliott Smith is back on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The singer/songwriter, who died in 2003, debuts on the list at No. 173 with Either/Or: Expanded Edition. The set is a revamped version of his 1997 album, which never reached a Billboard tally until now. It enters with 5,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 16, according to Nielsen Music, with 4,000 of that sum in traditional album sales.

Though Either/Or never charted, it is Smith’s best-selling release, with 429,000 copies sold (which includes the 4,000 sold of the expanded title). Smith was last on the Billboard 200 in 2007 with New Moon, which debuted and peaked at No. 24 and spent six weeks on the list.
