Erotica doesn’t compare to JML

I know I’m fussy but would be nice if you could add members points .

Agreed, the 'Justify My Love' video is one of her very best! 'Erotica' edges it as a song though.

I'll remember to add the individual points from here on in!

Quite a contrast to the era that would follow three years later, the music video for 'American Pie' appears to be a celebratory outlook on American, specifically the diversity of its society. As Madonna parades in front of a giant American flag wearing a tiara and a very loosely fitting vest, clips of American citizens appear, presenting the various cultures, upbringings, jobs, sexualities etc. that appear in American life. Unfortunately, music channels weren't so accepting of such diversity and used edited videos that omitted the homosexual embraces.

Madonna pays homage to pop art icon Andy Warhol and Italian director Luchino Visconti in 'Deeper & Deeper' with a video that takes us through the decades, from the glamour and style of the 20s and 30s to the party and disco of the 60s and 70s. We're warned "Beware! Our idols and demons will pursue us. Until we learn to let them go!" before we're introduced to Madonna emulating Warhol's Edie Sedgwick. She visits a nightclub and ties the pink balloons she holds, symbolising a link to the past, to the bar as she meets and dances with the party goers. When the balloons are sabotaged, Madonna runs back to rescue them, but the string is eventually cut and she watches them float into the sky. It's a video that lends itself to many an interpretation; themes of innocence and experience, comfort and anxiety, joy and fear supply the substance to match the amount of style the video affords.

One of my favourites! I love videos where Madonna just spontaneously dances and the whole club sequence in 'Deeper & Deeper' is such a joy. So much glamour and artistic references; easily one of Madonna's most stylish videos. To me, the balloons symbolise something that brings both comfort and discomfort, whether that be Madonna holding onto her mother who she loves but knows she needs to face the turmoil surrounding her death and move on, or someone struggling with their sexuality and having one foot in a world that brings them immense joy and escapism and a world where they believe they need to be something they're not.

38. Lucky Star // 28 Points

Points: 15 (vibe), 13 (SamJudd)

Like most early Madonna videos, 'Lucky Star' is rather uncomplicated as Madonna performs a simple dance routine and seductively writhes around the floor. However, it is Madonna's styling and Madonna's ability to work the camera that made this video a success and remain memorable to this date. All-black attire; torso showing; floppy ribbon tied in her messy hair; fingerless gloves; bangers covering her forearm - it's a look that made the 80s and is so closely associated with Madonna. The image is so natural and effortless, provocative yet innocent; it appealed to young girls and women and MTV's heavy rotation helped project the image further. It's fitting that Madonna channels Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's at the start with the lowering of sunglasses - a sign of her becoming part of the 'Hall of Fame' of stylish and influential women of the century.

'Live to Tell' introduces the first of many image makeovers for Madonna. She's stripped of her jewelry and mishmash clothing and adopts a more polished image, with golden-blonde, styled hair, subtle makeup and floral dress. Madonna drew influence from her idols of the Golden Era, wanting to depict a glamour she felt no longer existed. It also gave her a chance to show critics and the public alike not to categorise her; a sign that she'll embrace the styles and sounds that inspire her, not what everyone else is following.

Finally I have one video that has dropped !!

Liam you dunes Lucky Star up very well. I love it because of the styling and the beginning is so iconic !!!

'Lucky Star' is one I'd have voted for if I had enough space. It may be very simple but it's still entertaining to watch; just shows the strength of Madonna's starpower and determination back in those early career moments.

36. Hollywood // 34 Points

'Hollywood' is Madonna's satirical commentary on the obsession of fame and fortune, with its music video giving her the opportunity to further poke fun at the superficiality and delusions. Madonna portrays different styles and fashions, influenced by former Hollywood greats and the photography of Guy Bourdin, but goofs around with her poses, falling off of objects and fumbling around the floor. She's given botox injections and is prodded and poked by stylists, proving that what you see on the TV or in magazines is a processed, overly-adjusted image and not the real deal that people long for. It is still a stylish video but it's the humour that makes this video most special.

35. Sorry // 34 Points

Continuing from the 'Hung Up' music video, 'Sorry' sees Madonna and her girls leave the gaming parlour and board a kitted out white van where they change outfits and pick up different men to join them. It's suggested that they must prove themselves worthy competitors to face them in a dance-off that takes place further into the video. Naturally, Madonna's impressive moves allow the girls to triumph, but there's no hard feelings as the two groups celebrate and have fun in a skating arena, skating in line and performing synchronized dance moves. It's a fun and playful video with a great colour pallet - the neon purples and silver harks back to the album cover and just seems a fitting tint to match the 70s theme.

The Confessions music videos are the era's only weak point in my opinion. Not bad videos, just not visual FEASTS that leave you wanting more like she has put out for pretty much every other era that came before this.

^ Jump is actually terrible

I hate it

I think it would have been nice if Get Together and Jump followed on from Hung Up and Sorry.

I do get what you mean Bal regarding the videos. This is why I'd have loved Forbidden Love as a single as not only does it show a different side to the album lyrically and conceptually but would also lend itself to a fascinating video with lots to take in.

Madonna was touring when get together and Jump were released as singles , this is why their videos are not that creative.

I agree forbidden love would have made a great video , but 'Like It Or Not' was the 5th single choice for me.

I suppose that's the disadvantage of having such extravagant tours: the singles released at this point have their videos suffer rush jobs. I don't see why we couldn't get videos that just didn't feature Madonna though as there's no reason they can't be great videos without her.
^ no we need here in the video !!!!

Obviously a video with Madonna would be preferable, but I'd much rather a fantastic Madonna-less video rather than a sub-par video featuring Madonna. Using 'Forbidden Love' as an example again, that could have had a fab video that extended on the ideas shown in its tour performance and not necessarily have needed Madonna to appear.
