Chart Commentary

 

 

Notching up his second #1 at last, Charlie Puth's How Long jumps 11 spots to dethrone Avicii and Rita Ora's Lonely Together this week. It's Charlie's first visit to the top spot since the start of 2016, when We Don't Talk Anymore spent two weeks at the top, giving both him and Selena Gomez their first #1. How Long is the follow-up to #3 hit Attention, which was blocked from the top spot in a busy week by We the Kings' Sad Song and Shawn Mendes' There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back. Overall, it's his sixth top 10 hit, and third in a year following Attention and Little Mix collaboration Oops, which made #7 at the very end of last year..

Norwegian pop duo Marcus & Martinus had managed to score two top 20 hits in my chart before this week, with their debut hit Elektrisk reaching #12 in 2016, while Like It Like It reached #15 earlier this year. However, the duo, both 15 years old, score their first top 10 hit this week, as Make You Believe in Love is a massive new entry at #3 this week. It's the fourth single from their third (!) album Moments, due out this November.

After I saw him live and met him on Thursday 5th October, Manel Navarro's seen a big boost for two of his hits, with recent single Keep On Falling re-entering at #14 last week and #2 smash Do It for Your Lover just one place behind. This week, they stay adjacent, and both leap into the top 10 and #7 and #8 respectively. Keep On Falling becomes Manel's third top 10 hit, while Do It for Your Lover returns for a fourth stint in my top 10 - something only achieved previously by Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You.

American pop singer Dylan Hyde scored his debut hit over two and a half years ago, when Sick of Your Love charted at #2 behind G.R.L.'s Lighthouse. There was no peep from him after that, with no follow-up release, until now. Clearly was released in July 2017. I only stumbled across it during the week, and it made an instant impression with such a catchy chorus. It becomes his second top 10 hit, debuting at #10, and is sure to climb.

Elsewhere this week, Khalid scores his third top 20 hit in a month, as Marshmello collaboration Silence debuts at #16. It follows collaborations with Logic and Lorde, which peaked at #9 and #20 respectively. It's DJ Marshmello's first chart appearance, and he joins Mabel, Kojo Funds, Stylo G and the Shadowboxers in making his first chart appearance this week.

 

Singer/songwriter Zak Abel scores his first #1 album this week, knocking Demi Lovato off the top spot after two weeks (her best run at #1). It's Zak's first album, and was much delayed, originally scheduled for a release in March but ultimately it came out last week (6th October). Hot on his heels are The Tide, whose debut album Young Love came out yesterday (13th), and are big contenders for next week's #1 album alongside P!nk's Beautiful Trauma.
