Delta's walk of triumph

By Kathy McCabe

DELTA Goodrem's triumphant appearance at the 2003 ARIA awards as she battled cancer has been voted the most powerful moment in the event's 20-year history.

But Goodrem has revealed that just minutes before she walked up the red carpet she was racked with sobs after making the sudden decision to shave all her hair off.

It was common knowledge the award-winning singer wore a wig at the ceremony but when Goodrem was fitting the hairpiece, tufts of hair remaining after chemotherapy, stuck out underneath.

Goodrem said she was in shock after seeing herself bald for the first time and struggled to regain her composure before greeting fans lining the red carpet.

"I decided when everyone was out of the room except a specialist in that sort of thing ... 'I think you should get rid of it all'. I looked in the mirror and I burst into tears,'' Goodrem says in the Max TV special, ARIA: 20 and Counting.

"Right before the red carpet I was bawling my eyes out. I didn't know if I could go out (because) I was so nervous because I had this thing on my head that felt really weird. I had the ARIAs in my sight for ages ... the key for people when they're going through something serious is to have something to look forward to.''

Neil Finn's performance of Better Be Home Soon paying tribute to his late Crowded House bandmate Paul Hester last year was voted the second big moment in ARIA award history.

Max screens ARIA: 20 and Counting today at 5.30pm. The 2006 ARIA awards will be held on October

Kirsty xx

Yeah thats a sad little article :( I admire her so much...she has been so brave!
I always thought she was so brave going to those awards...There's not that many people courageous enough to make a public appearance in a wig under those circumstances I don't think - particularly if you're not yet comfortable with it.

That actually nearly brought tears to my eyes!

Delta's the best, she didn't deserve any of what she went through!

it was so sad to watch. she started crying it was sad. she looked good :cheer: !
When did she cry Kirsty, on stage?

That's really sad and I didn't know that either.

Bless her.
