Chart Commentary

 

 

In a week that is relatively static at the top end, we see the highest new entry appear at #7. Clean Bandit notch up their fifth top 10 hit, and speaking solely about official singles, it's their fifth in a row (promo single Disconnect breaks the run). I Miss You is the fourth single from their forthcoming second studio album, and follows three #1 hits - Tears, Rockabye and Symphony. Tears and Rockabye both climbed to #1 in their first full week, while Symphony took an extra week to swap places with Louisa Johnson's Best Behaviour earlier this year. I Miss You's #7 debut is much lower considering this *is* its first full week (it didn't debut last week on 24 hours of availability), but nevertheless another strong showing. It's the second top 10 hit for featured artist Julia Michaels, who achieved a #3 hit with Uh Huh during the summer.

The second of two new entries in this week's top 10 comes from Selena Gomez, who achieves her fourth top 10 hit of the year. The first came from #3 hit It Ain't Me, alongside Kygo, and she followed it up with Bad Liar (#5) and Fetish (#2), both of which are expected to be on her upcoming sixth studio album alongside new single Wolves. It's Selena's 11th top 10 hit overall, the first being Come & Get It back in 2013, which peaked at #3. She's joined on Wolves by DJ Marshmello, who achieved his first hit just weeks ago with Khalid on Silence, which has so far peaked at #14.

Rita Ora spends a second week at #1 this week, making Anywhere the first song to spend multiple weeks at #1 since Louis Tomlinson's Back to You in July/August. It needs just one more week to match the joint longest #1 run of the year of 3 weeks, tied by Louis and his bandmate Harry Styles' Sign of the Times. As things stand, 2017 is the only year where a #1 lasting at least four weeks has not occurred. Out of a massive 35 #1s so far this year, only seven have spent more than a sole week at the top:

Leaping to #2 behind Rita is Camila Cabello, who impressively repeaks on her thirteenth week in the chart with Havana. It's now her highest peaking single to date as a soloist, leaping ahead of the #4 peak of Crying in the Club and the #5 peak of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which Havana tied with just four weeks ago. It's also the highest peak for Young Thug, who hasn't charted otherwise. Aside from the aforementioned Marshmello, no other artists achieve new personal bests this week, but we do see chart debuts for Noah Cyrus and X Factor star Grace Davies.
