Commentary

 

Avicii has had a great year delivering the comeback of the year and so it is only right that he starts off the Hot 100, with the first of five appearances here - not bad considering he only released six songs! This was the penultimate song of the EP and a great way to draw it to a close in my opinion. Now I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed with this song on first listen. Where are the brash synths? Where's the huge chorus and where's the drop? Of course, with it being Avicii I gave it a few more chances and it quickly grew into a great song. The lyrics very much reflect how Avicii felt about his time as a DJ prior to the tough decision he made to retire from touring. He wouldn't change a single day and it's a very positive outlook on life in general. Sometimes we want to go back and change the past, but why should we feel the need to? Aluna's voice is lush as per. The laidback, acoustic feel of the song really works for it. The sax that comes into the song as it grows really adds to it too. Just a beauty of a song in general. With Avicii's five appearances he now totals 32 YE Hot 100 appearances (I believe this is a record), including double appearances between years for 'My Feelings For You', 'Levels' and 'Hey Brother'. He is also the only artist to have at least one appearance in every EOY list since 2010 (the history is down below for you to marvel at).

Commentary

 

The only indie song in the top 100 surprisingly comes from Arcade Fire. Now this is a band that I felt were incredibly overrated and none of their songs were memorable, but for return single 'Everything Now' from the album of the same name they exceeded all my non-expectations with a catchy accessible tune. Of course it helps that it is quite dancey for an indie band and indeed it borrows heavily from the disco era. Doing research on the track I also found out just now that dance legend Thomas Bangalter co-produced the track, which is a fun fact. The lyrics are a clever take on the world of today and how we want and can have everything at our fingertips, so much it's an obsession, but we're still not fully happy - something most of us can relate to. The instrumentation is the highlight though, the piano, drums, backing vocals and most of all the pan flute. *.* It was great to see this somewhat cross over to the official chart, making #50, and it was a very steady grower for me as I kept finding new things to enjoy about it. A very unique hit for me amongst all the dance anyway, but for now it is the only hit for Arcade Fire.

Commentary

 

It's been another big year for Jonas Blue which started with him getting his first, and to date only, top ten hit in this chart although #23-peaking 'Mama' is still yet to come. The first four singles of his have been very consistent in quality though I'd say 'By Your Side' is marginally better than 'Perfect Strangers'. It suited the winter season well with the lyrical theme and RAYE is a great singer too. It was pleasing to see her name come up when the song was announced as her previous solo single 'Shhh' which won the BJSC showcased her potential. RAYE herself is a big contender for the year-end #1 too with her feature on Jax Jones' massive single 'You Don't Know Me'. I also very much liked the reference to Calvin Harris with the vocal chopping on the chorus reminiscent of 'This Is What You Came For'. It's a great little bop which Jonas is great at doing, he bridges the gap from pop to dance well in my opinion even if it's admittedly a very commercial sound. Recent single 'We Could Go Back' was a bit disappointing but hopefully he comes back well with his planned new single in January.

The year of 2017 really belonged to two songs in particular, Ed Sheeran's 'Shape Of You' and this, the song responsible for kickstarting the worldwide Latin trend (though the genre had been getting minor success in the US already) and also the world record holder for most viewed music video on YouTube. I'm not a big fan of so-called 'Spanglish' remixes so it was the original that charted here. Now it did of course eventually get overexposed so it's one I probably won't be going back to that often for a while, but we can't let that distract from the fact this a bop. It sounded really fresh at the time, just a shame that the sound has since run into the ground a bit, not helped by the fact most of these songs are very similar. Fonsi really seems the sensual vibe this is going for and it was great to have Daddy Yankee finally lose his UK 1HW status and what better rapper to bring reggaeton back? I'd still rank 'Gasolina' above this though, now that is a tune.

Yay at By Your Side making the top 100 here. It's still my favourite Jonas Blue single to this date, I'll never get over how it never took off in the same way that his other singles before & after have :cry: I'm a big fan of the chopped vocals and RAYE is a fantastic vocalist too. I'm not keen on YDKM though so I hope something can prevent it being #1 here :heehee:

 

It's nice to see a little indie representation in the top 100 too even if Arcade Fire is the only example of that. I wasn't expecting to like a song by them as much as I did too but it ended up being one of the soundtrack songs to my summer, so joyous and it never failed to lift my spirits :wub:

Commentary

 

After a great year with features I was very excited for what she'd come up with as a lead artist as a breakthrough single and the result, 'Hurtin Me' was very impressive. With a big hook and a reference to Rihanna's 'Work' I was definitely going to love it. Shame she kinda killed that momentum with the awful 'Ding A Ling' but I still have hope for her, she could easily recover and just let that sink as a buzz single quietly. It would've been nice if she did a bit of rapping on this song too but her half-singing works, and the French Montana guest verse is the best guest verse he did all year, it doesn't feel phoned in like his others. Both French and Stefflon still have one more entry to come each.
