36 Demi Lovato - Sorry Not Sorry | 2-4-6-10-8-10-18-22-24-30-37-X (11 weeks)

Continuing the run of hits that Demi Lovato had in 2017, Sorry Not Sorry gave her a ninth consecutive top 10 hit when it debuted at #2 behind Ulrik Munther's Coffee In Shanghai (which only appeared a few spots below, so no real regrets there). That's an unprecedented run of hits, particularly when my chart allows album tracks (heck, one of those top 10 hits actually *was* an album track from her Confident album!). It proved to be an enduring hit in my chart, and whilst I could understand some of the criticisms of Demi's vocals, I loved the new gospel-influenced pop she was making and it was very pleasing to see Sorry Not Sorry hit the UK top 10, as well as becoming her highest peaking hit in the States.

35 Citizen Four - My Name (Say It) | 2-3-3-5-7-10-… (6+ weeks)

Boyband Citizen Four seemed to get off to a promising start. After being assembled by and signed to Island Records, the four-piece group consisting of Josh Levi (of X Factor USA "fame"), Austin Percario and brothers Conner and Carson Boatman built up a small fanbase through online covers. After releasing their third original single Want You Back (which appeared lower down in my countdown), Josh left the group and was replaced by Mikey Fusco. The new Citizen Four released new single My Name (Say It) towards the end of 2017, and it was instant love. It samples the classic hit Say My Name by Destiny's Child, and does a brilliant job of bringing it up to date. I also sent the song to BJSC, and for the time being, it's my final BJSC entry. The group now seem to have split up... oops. Here for a Conner solo career tbh x

I had the same problem with Chained, it was really great for about 2 months but fell very quickly afterwards. Swish Swish went on to have more longevity for me and a higher EOY position.

Attention was fairly good by Charlie's standards, and How Long isn't all that bad either (the EDX remix (currently in my weekly top 100) has made the original more tolerable on the radio but I still wouldn't put it on my playlist).

Demi Omg Screech :\

"Attention" is great, nice to see an artist that I used to hate, make good music now! Hopefully his album doesn't suck!

"Sorry Not Sorry" is for me a good song, like the sample of Chance The Rapper's "No Problem"!

34 Jonas Blue feat. William Singe - Mama | 5-6-14-12-11-11-13-16-22-31-35-40-X (12 weeks)

Only three songs in my top 40 didn't reach my top 2 at some point, and Jonas Blue's Mama is the most impressive of the lot, as it's the lowest peaking track of my entire top 40, never making it higher than #5. The huge debut for Mama was unexpected, as Jonas Blue had only troubled my top 10 once, with Fast Car, and even then that had a short shelf-life for me. William Singe was a totally unknown name to me too, so no name power from the feature. This is a case of a song completely surpassing any expectations I had and impressing me simply on its quality. While it doesn't stray from Jonas Blue's previous singles, it has an extra spark to it that ensured I kept revisiting it, and it notched up an impressive 12 weeks on my chart despite only 2 weeks top 10. Will's voice is great too, I guess it helps that he sounds like the kinda person I'd have sent to BJSC! :') Definitely my favourite Jonas Blue song to date.

33 KStewart feat. Yungen - Hands | 12-2-2-6-10-11-18-26-33-X (9 weeks)

Another BJSC entry of mine now. KStewart's been on my radar to some degree even before she scored her one and only top 40 hit, alongside Oliver Heldens on Last All Night (Koala). However, beyond that, very little of hers has caught my attention. Keeping You Up made my EOY top 250 in 2015, but it wasn't a substantial hit on my chart and while she always had potential, none of her solo tracks quite hit the spot. I found Hands by checking out another of her songs first actually - Sex 4 Breakfast  - but it was Hands that clicked with me out of the two and it became an instant smash hit in my chart. It's catchy from start to finish, and it could almost be an Ariana Grande song I find, as KStewart actually sounds pretty similar to her. Yungen's guest verse is the best part of the song too - full of energy and pretty brilliant lyrics that don't feel remotely clunky even with the amount of references he's thrown in. It was gutting when it DNQ'd in BJSC, as I felt I was onto a surefire hit, but hey, it's everyone else's loss.

It was probably the most gutting DNQ I had last year, as I thought Buzzjack would enjoy it way more! :(

32 Louis Tomlinson & Steve Aoki - Just Hold On | 1-2-4-6-11-14-22-29-34-37-X (10 weeks)

Just days after his mum sadly passed, Louis Tomlinson launched his solo career with a collaboration with Steve Aoki. Whilst on paper it may seem like an odd time to make such a move, Louis' X Factor performance was more emotional than it would be in most cases. Whether Just Hold On was written about her illness or not, it was incredibly poignant and more emotional than most dance tracks are for me. The production is relatively generic, but it's the delivery that makes Just Hold On a cracking debut for Louis, and although he's definitely the weakest 1D member vocally, he sounds brilliant on this. It's Louis' first appearance of two, with Back to You still to come, while it's Steve's very first EOY appearance.

31 P!nk - What About Us | 29-1-3-6-8-14-16-20-25-30-30-36-40-X (13 weeks)

Being released when I was on holiday, P!nk's What About Us was yet another example of how you can succeed with a politically-themed pop song without making it inaccessible. What About Us indirectly responds to Donald Trump, and was released to kickstart P!nk's seventh studio album campaign in August. It was an instant hit both in the official charts and in my own chart, zooming to #1 in the latter in its first full week (her second, and first in four years). I adore the sentiment of the track, and complete with another brilliant P!nk music video, it was the perfect way to come back with a bang. Overplay hasn't killed it for me either, I'm just delighted the public are still here for someone as insanely talented as P!nk all these years on.

3 Declan McKenna

A year ago, I'd barely heard of Declan McKenna. I'm sure I'd seen his name posted on Buzzjack here and there, but I'd not heard a single song of his and I didn't really have any intention of doing so. It wasn't until around July when I checked out his recently released debut album, What Do You Think About the Car?, purely on a whim. It was then I realised that I should've checked him out as soon as I saw him name written down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's nothing I love more in music than a surprise. When you listen to a song and it's *so* much better than you ever expected, it's the best feeling, and that's what happened with Declan. As I listened to his album, I was drawn in by his voice and his fantastic grasp on melodies - better than many other similar artists, in my opinion. All too often, people try to push the boundaries in music and forget the actual "song" element (lyrics, melody, etc) but Declan focuses more on the latter. Brazil for example talks about corruption within football, and whilst it's not a topic I know anything about, his lyrics are incredibly interesting nonetheless.

Another aspect I love is how consistent the album is. Each song works brilliantly with the song before and after on the tracklisting, and it's without a doubt the album I've played most from start to finish over the past year (as opposed to cherry-picking tracks to peep). That being said, the songs do stand up perfectly on their own, and different songs impact on me at different times. There's no weak link, and it's rare I find that with an album.

Unfortunately I've not seen Declan live yet, but I've got a ticket booked for his London show in April and honestly I'm so excited. To hear my favourite album of 2017 performed live will be brilliant. Declan's also working on new material, and while I'm not expecting it just yet, I'm praying he can deliver another consistently fantastic album in the not too distant future!

30 Shawn Mendes - There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back | 7-2-4-8-11-22-20-23-30-31-38-X-38-X (12 non-consecutive weeks)

He dominated last year with the #2 and #10 EOY singles, but Shawn Mendes makes it no higher than #30 with his only 2017 single. There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back was released as a late addition to the Illuminate album and served as the third single, becoming an instant hit in the UK. In my chart, it soared to a #7 debut on just a couple of days, but it couldn't make it higher than #2 in its first full week thanks to We the Kings' Sad Song. This is something that bothers me slightly looking back, as Shawn's song has undoubtedly held up better, so I wish it had made the #1 spot that week. It's notably more upbeat than most Shawn songs, with a chirpy guitar instrumental following the chorus which adds to the energy of the track. I'd love to hear more of this, as much as I like ballad Shawn, on his third album!

29 CNCO & Little Mix - Reggaetón Lento | 22-2-5-6-12-13-17-20-25-33-30-33-X (12 weeks)

Little Mix have grown drastically in my estimations in the past couple of years. I quite liked their first couple of eras, but it took me a while to fully "stan" them, and I guess their EOY history below shows just how much I've come round to them the past couple of eras. They still have one more song to come, as Touch appears for the second year in a row (it was released in the final week before last year's cut-off and made #1). Reggaetón Lento is their second highest track though, and was their third #2 hit in the past two years. When the collaboration was rumoured, I checked out the original Reggaetón Lento (Bailemos) with just CNCO, and I really enjoyed it. While unsure of the Little Mix version at first (I mean, there is considerably more Little Mix than CNCO in the song :kink:), it grew rapidly on me with repeated plays and to this day, it hasn't grown old for me. I'd say it's in my top 5 Little Mix singles now too. My clear favourite of the Latin-influenced chart hits of 2017!

Really loved Mama initially, but I can't even listen to it anymore lmao  it's intense overplay being the reason, hopefully it'll sound good for me soon, as Jonas Blue's recent stuff has been disappointing :(

Just Hold On is so good too, the XF performance was so amazing, and I think it's the only thing from the 1D members I've actually genuinely really liked, I think it gets way too much stick tbh

I support more upbeat Shawn songs in 2018 and beyond. (nod)

Once Reggaeton Lento was released it was basically stuck in my head for the rest of the year! Particularly the ending, muevete muevete-e-e, drop it low drop it lowww :music: Oops ahead of Power though!? lil rude~

There's Nothing Holding Me Back is one of my favourite Shawn songs for sure, really catchy at first but it did wear off after a while :(

Reggaeton Lento is a song I like to pretend I'm really not a fan of but it is one of the songs that hasn't really grown old for me at all :o I guess not giving songs any attention works :P

28 Dua Lipa - New Rules | 4-5-7-7-7-7-11-15-21-25-29-34-X-19-38-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)

It looks like I don't love New Rules as much as everyone else, considering it seemed to top most personal charts going and is undoubtedly contending for most EOY #1s too. Here Dua is at #28 in mine though, with a #4 weekly chart peak. It's nothing to be sniffed at though. New Rules is the highest non-top 2 hit in my EOY, and has surpassed each of Dua's EOY positions so far... except the one song she has still to come! New Rules debuted as the third highest of four new entries in my top 5, behind Kesha's Praying and Demi Lovato's Sorry Not Sorry in the top 2, and HNNBL's Trust which fell 1-3. The song debuted right after its video release, and quite honestly, the video is by far and away my favourite of 2017. The sentiment, the direction and the choreography are all absolutely spot on, not remotely OTT and not cringeworthy like a "girl power" theme could easily be. It's a masterclass in how you do music video these days, and it just helped a strong album track become one of my favourite songs of the year. I'd say it's my favourite of Dua's own material, but as you can see here, Scared to Be Lonely is my overall Dua favourite.

27 Maggie Lindemann - Pretty Girl | 13-2-6-12-22-31-X-36-38-36-X (9 non-consecutive weeks)

When I first heard Pretty Girl, I listened to both of the main versions - the original mix, and the Cheat Codes and Cade remix. Instantly, I preferred the original version, but I downloaded both. It debuted at #13 in my chart, giving American budding popstar Maggie Lindemann her first hit in my chart after about half a week. Its first full week saw a climb to #2, still fuelled almost entirely by thee original mix. However, as time went on, the remix levelled itself out with the original. I guess its chart success helped - it's always satisfying seeing a song you enjoy blow up, and it gave me an excuse to revisit the remix more. Now, I actively choose to hear the remix over the original. Either way, both versions make for a great breakthrough for Maggie. The statement is perfect - she's more than just her looks, and it's exactly the type of song you need when the charts are full of men bragging about "f**king b*tches" etc. It's also worth noting that the Pretty Girl chart run actually bothers me slightly, because I feel it doesn't represent how much I enjoy it. The original version tailed off quickly, but if I did a longer chart, the remix would've kept it bobbing up and down just outside the top 40 for a long time!

26 Clean Bandit feat. Zara Larsson - Symphony | 18-3-1-3-5-7-12-17-23-35-X (10 weeks)

After scoring their first two #1s on my chart in 2016, Clean Bandit made it a hat-trick with Symphony when 2017 got going. I remember it leaking a week before release, thanks to Zara's album leaking in full, and I was one who checked it out right away out of anticipation. While the album overall took time to grow on me, Symphony was an instant smash to my ears. I adored it from first listen, and it charted at #3 the week after the leak, behind Louisa Johnson's Best Behaviour and outgoing #1 Bad Luck Love by Benjamin, both of which are still to come. Nevertheless, Symphony leapfrogged both the week after to climb to #1. The track features vocals from Zara Larsson, who really shines with a brilliant use of light and shade. It's great to hear Zara's delicate vocals in the verses, building up to a bigger chorus. Even for Zara though, the vocals are rather restrained and controlled, compared to Ain't My Fault for example. The production is a beauty too, yet another wonderful track from Clean Bandit and I'm actually really excited for their second album, despite not having any urge to check out the debut based on the singles.

25 Mike Perry, The Vamps & Sabrina Carpenter - Hands | 25-1-2-4-8-11-15-21-20-19-23-28-35-37-X (14 weeks)

The second song called Hands in my top 40, this one comes from a trio of artists, all of whom had previously achieved a hit each at least in my chart before now. Mike Perry leads the pack, a Swedish DJ best known for UK top 40 hit The Ocean, which reached #5 in my chart. Sabrina Carpenter provides vocals, and she achieved her third top 10 hit with Hands, interestingly following not long after Thumbs made #7. Nice pattern. The Vamps lead the way in terms of previous chart hits. Hands was their eleventh #1 single, which left them tied with One Direction for most #1 singles. Of course, they broke the record with two further #1s later in the year! The song itself was one I heard live on their tour last year, before Night & Day (Night Edition) came out. Therefore, a bunch of new songs were played that I hadn't heard before. Hands was one of them, and it was my favourite of them all actually. Sabrina was there too, although I wasn't sure she'd be on the studio version but I'm delighted she was. I love the catchiness of Hands, I just wish it was a little bit longer!

New Rules  so so good and so glad she's finally blown up so much too!

Love the Cheat Codes remix of Pretty Girl, it may be basic, but it's just a fun banger, something which the chart needs more of these days tbh

Symphony too ofc  I actually don't love it quite as much as everyone else, Rockabye and I Miss You being better imo, but I think that just shows how great Clean Bandit are tbh
