Yessss Bob (though I did kinda prefer his cover of Mambo No.5) *. I'm pretty sure my parents bought that, I know that was all I heard at the time! That top 5 (Westlife aside, which I have never heard but I assume is the same old shit) are all quite iconic actually, albeit in quite different ways!

Shows you how big dance was back then with a dance song entering as high as #6 on the Christmas chart and also another dance tune just outside the top 10.

No Good 4 Me is a brilliant track I especially like the wobbly bassline although I prefer The Prodigy song No Good (Start the Dance) that sampled the same line from the 1987 song Kelly Charles - You're No Good for Me. I do prefer No Good 4 Me to Bound 4 Da Reload I think.

Day 7: 2002

In a race for #1 between the two groups manufactured on 'Popstars: The Rivals' quality came out on top with Girls Aloud claiming their first #1 whilst we wouldn't see much more of One True Voice. Also entering the top 10 is a dance banger from Love Inc - 'You're A Superstar' at #7, and Avril Lavigne with 'Sk8er Boi' at #9 (it did end up peaking at #8, goals). Both of those as well as 'Sound Of The Underground' I all loved at the time and they're still great now especially Love Inc.

Also at #3 are the iconic Cheeky Girls with childhood anthem 'Cheeky Song'. No novelty Christmas songs this year though (I suppose Cheeky Girls and Las Ketchup (at #8 after 11 weeks!) fulfils the yearly novelty quota) with our remaining new entries coming from Death In Vegas at #14, Pascal at #23 (a very cheesy Clubland 80s cover) and Rolling Stones at #36. Also worth noting the other great songs in the top 10 in 'Lose Yourself' from Eminem and 'Feel' from Robbie Williams.

Sound of The Underground I really liked at the time. I wonder now were the producers inspired by Puretone's Addicted To Bass earlier in the year for the production as it does sound to me like it uses a poppier version of Addicted To Bass's kind of style, they share the use of breakbeats and sassy vocal style.

Sacred Trust I found rather boring and forgettable back then and still do.

I remember I was glad The Cheeky Girls got #3 at the time and gatecrashed the two rival winners singles, not that I followed the charts but I heard it on the TV.

I wonder would Love Inc's You're A Superstar have done better in the chart if it was released in a quieter week. What a weird week to release it, still did very well though on a busy week.

I do like that Pascal ft Karen Parry cover of 'I Think We're Alone Now'. Pascal are actually Flip and Fill under a different name, not sure why they used that lesser known name.

Day 8: 2004

No contest here with Band Aid 20 smashing it out of the park for a third consecutive week to hold the Xmas #1. It was the first Band Aid release since 1989 and did better than that version too. Low sales everywhere else allowed Ronan Keating to get a #2 single so we can all be thankful for Band Aid that year as 'Father And Son' would have made an awful Christmas number one in both sales figures and song quality. Quite a few other new entries but most of them I don't know nor do I particularly want to check them out either, which includes a cover of 'I Got You Babe' from Bo Selecta ('Proper Crimbo') though credited to Merrion, McColl & Kensit. That enters at #5 and if 'Proper Crimbo' is anything to go by then I expect this would be terrible also.

Saving the top ten are 'I Believe In You', 'You Can Do It', 'Lose My Breath' and 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams'. We also have 'Out Of Touch' in the top 20 which would go on to climb into the top ten in the new year. Out of the other new entries one I do recognise/like is 'Just Can't Wait (Saturday)' at #28 from 100% though honestly I forgot it existed and it's not exactly a dance classic.

Yep I agree Band Aid 20 is better imo than the Ronan and Yusuf version of 'Father and Son' (I do prefer the Boyzone version). Yusuf's vocal is nice in it though.

Just can't Wait (Saturday) I don't remember from the time but it is rather good imo, recognise it as it seems to cover the song in the Ant and Dec's Saturday night theme tune. Prefer the Stonebridge radio edit than the normal radio edit tbh as it sounds more dancey.

It did take a while for 'Out Of Touch' to take off, almost like a steaming era chart run it had. Weird in the held back era. Great track though, one I remember a lot from the time!

Haven't ever heard I don't think that Morrissey song that entered at #10, rather good on listening to it now imo. Stand by You, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and Lose My Breath are all very good tracks in the top 10 imo too. 'I Believe In You' is OK imo but not one of my favourite Kylie Minogue tracks.

Also the iconic Drop it Like Its Hot by Snoop/Pharrell - one of the best tracks of the era!

Also the equally iconic xmas classic by Hot Pantz I'd Like to Give You One For Christmas in at 64!

I think my favourite in that Top 10 was “I Believe In You” but that's probably too melancholic to be a Christmas number 1.

“Numb/Encore” at 19 was on its 4th week of a 13 week run between 14 and 20 and I think is the biggest ever selling #14 record (I think??)

Paul Holt at 50 (down from 35) accepting the challenge from Simon Cowell, when on the first series of The X Factor Simon said he would pay Paul £50,000 if he got a #1 single.. it's not too late to remedy that..

The Numb/Encore chart run was epic - remember it well.

Human League got the Christmas No1 remember - electropop at its best!

Christmas 1992

Chart published 20 December 1992 - listen to it here: https://www.mixcloud.com/1869300/uk-top-40-...kes-20-12-1992/

Whitney Houston scores an easy 4th week at #1 but Take That (who were turned down by Simon Cowell) score their first Top 5 hit and Simon Cowell's most successful project to-date (having reached #14 the previous Christmas with The UK Mixmasters) 'WWF Superstars' falls from 4-6. Also worthy of note is Darlene Love at 34 who Michael always 'bangs on about' and my favourite tracks here from Stereo MCs and The Prodigy (albeit not very festive!)

Here's the chart commentary from James Masterton at the time:

Preamble:

--------

And so here we are, the Christmas chart 1992. As expected all is fairly

quiet with few great surprises. 5 new entries, 13 go up, 5 non-movers

Analysis:

--------

No. 40: NEW ENTRY. Brand New Heavies - Stay This Way. The Brand New

Heavies have been making subtle impressions upon the chart during the

year, and this track to round of the year is a typical example of their

recreation of the best aspects of Philadelhia Soul. In the current chart

climate they tend to lose out sales wise, but for what they do there are

few that do it better than this.

No. 39: NEW ENTRY. Uncanny Alliance - I Got My Education. Hey, a rap

record with a social conscience for Christmas. Radio One have loved this

record and have been playing it to death. As a result it way well be a

substantial new year hit.

No. 38: NEW ENTRY. Louie Louie - The Thought Of It. A Rockwell for the

nineties I suppose, the American smash finally makes an impression on

the UK 40 helped in part I suppose by his guest appearance on the

televised 'Smash Hits Awards' a few weeks ago.

No. 34: NEW ENTRY. Darlene Love - All Alone On Christmas. 'Ere, lads. I

got a great idea. As it's Christmas lets release a Phil Spector

Christmas record again', 'Yeah great idea Harry, why not Sleigh Ride?'.

'Nah, everyone knows that, pick a really obscure one that nobody has

ever heard of before - who knows? It might just stand a chance of being

the only record in the Christmas chart that is actually ABOUT Christmas.'

No. 28: FALLER. East Side Beat - Alive And Kicking. Suffering perhaps

from being a) not a patch on the original and b) being released so soon

after the reissue of the original it is not a patch on.

No. 23: CLIMBER. Boyz II Men - Motownphilly. The highest climber this

week, but watch next week for a slight surge again for the evergreen

'End Of The Road' which is still hanging around, down this week at 27.

No. 19: NEW ENTRY. Michael Bolton - Drift Away. The only people I have

ever heard admitting to liking the American soulsters music are the two

assistants in my local off-licence. Elsewhere in Britain his music is

regarded (perhaps a little unfairly) as MOR tripe. Here then is the

second single off the 'Timeless' album which follows the first into the

Top 20. Incredibly, although the song is a standard, Dobie Gray's

original never made the UK charts....

No. 11: CLIMBER. Lisa Stansfield - Someday I'm Coming Back. I would have

expected this to make the 10 this week given all the promotion she has

been doing. It is still selling well though, top 3 in the new year is a possiblity.

No. 10: FALLER. Madonna - Deeper and Deeper. Down from 6, this means

that there is a strong possibility this will become the first Madonna

single for 5 years to miss the Top 5. Not quite the tragedy it seems

though - of all the singles Madonna has ever released in Britain, only

'Lucky Star' has never made the Top 10 and even this is made up for by

the fact that 'Holiday' has been there 3 times with 'Crazy For You'

coming in twice.

Top 3: Well, in actualy fact it is exactly the same as last week.

Charles and Eddie at 3, Michael Jackson at 2.

No. 1: 4th WEEK. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You. The single

that apparantly will not stop selling. Last Saturday it became only the

second single in the last 6 years to sell over 1 million copies. So far

it has sold 4.5 million around the world, is No.1 in 9 countries and in

the US is the second biggest selling single ever. Ironically when first

released bookmakers only gave it a 33-1 outside chance of being No.1 for

Christmas. Latest offer now is odds of 10-1 on that it will beat Bryan

Adams' record of 16 consecutive weeks at the top. With sales on an

upward spiral at the moment it would be folly to rule that out at present.

Who said the 7" single was dead?

**************************************************************************

And that is that for Christmas. Thankyou to all those who have mailed me

over the past few months for the encouragement and thanks for these

articles. I may not have the chance to post one on next weeks chart but

I will make some reference to it in the analysis of the first chart of 1993.

James Masterton - 21/12/92

1992, the year I was born! :cheer:

I have been checking out the 90s chart archives a lot recently in connection with finally reading the 90s dance number 1s thread on here so I finally know more about 90s chart music, particularly dance music now. :cheer:

Shamen - Phorever People is my fave in that top 10. It kind of continued the eurodance trend started by Snap! - Rhythm Is A Dancer with the techno synths and the male rapped verses and soulful female sung chorus, and of course that trend would last into early 1995.

I don't know why Shamen didn't continue with that sort of sound tbh, they could have got more hits especially in 1993 when that sound became more of a trend. Their next single was much less commercial sounding though so maybe they didn't want to go down the eurodance path too much.

Out Of Space and Rage's version of Run To You are fab dance tunes also.

Outside dance music, Would I Lie To You is an excellent song too I think. I have liked that song pretty much from when I first heard it which was years ago on the radio.

'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston is much better than the Dolly Parton original and I like the use of the gap before the huge final chorus with Whitney's huge vocal.

Good to see you continue this Dr Blind, I would have but I couldn't find a site to copy and paste the archive chart easily. Can you maybe do 1994 next?

I've got a link to the broadcast chart of Xmas 1994 (the first broadcast on Christmas Day) so yeah I'll put it up tomorrow.

Yay! :cheer:

The Christmas 1994 chart is good not just for the battle at the top between 2 songs that still get played a lot at Christmas but some of the excellent dance tunes in the chart at the time too.

I looked up the 1993 Christmas chart just out of interest and definitely the brilliant song at number 4 that week would have made the best Christmas number 1 that year imo.

Christmas 1994

Chart published 25 December 1994 - listen to it here: https://www.mixcloud.com/lottielonglegs/rad...ookes-25121994/

This was the first ever Top 40 broadcast on Christmas Day itself.. the #1 was revealed a little earlier on Top of the Pops on BBC1 so listeners already knew the #1. Of course it was the big Christmas battle between East 17 and Mariah Carey. East 17 had spent 3 weeks already at number 1 and Mariah was on her 2nd at #2 however there was a last minute challenge from Oasis, self-touted as an 'instant #1' in typical arrogant Gallagher style, it kept the race going and ended up crashing in at a very respectable #3 (by miles their biggest hit to-date) - and a little below them were two future #1s from Rednex and Celine Dion which would be huge in the first few months of 1995.
