Twisted handyman Freddy Kruger is burned to death by the neighbours after his brutal child torturing is uncovered but now he's back, stalking the local teenagers in their dreams. Sporting his trademark striped jumper, hat and gloves of daggers his crosses the boundaries between nightmare and reality as he slays the kids in their sleep. It's up to one girl, Nancy to try and stop him...but how do you kill a figment of the imagination? Robert Englund typecasts himself forever in a brilliant lead performance as the child murdering anti-hero and B-movie staple John Saxon puts in a good turn as a cop. The film has lost a little power due to the glut of dreamlike, surreal horror that followed in it's wake and stole a lot of the moves. For people who were kids when this came out, Freddy is still an effective bogeyman despite the wise cracking goofing off of later sequels and for younger audiences, this is a cool cheesy 80s spook show with plenty of laughs. Watch out for Johnny Depp, still in his 21 Jump Street teen idol trousers before Tim Burton saved him from a life of empty pouting. Highly recommended.
