December 19, 20177 yr Classic xmas chart, although without The Pogues it would be just normal!! Hugely appreciate the airplay chart tho - did not old xmas songs make the top 40?
December 19, 20177 yr Author Hugely appreciate the airplay chart tho - did not old xmas songs make the top 40? At the time, the airplay chart was based on playlist reports from radio stations. So songs like "Merry Xmas Everybody" or "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" couldn't chart on the airplay chart unless it was playlisted on one of the big stations (Radio 1, 2, or Capital at the time).
December 19, 20177 yr Ah I see and i assume the audiences at each station wouldn't have been taken into account either?
December 19, 20177 yr Author Ah I see and i assume the audiences at each station wouldn't have been taken into account either? Pretty much. Music Week didn't switch to audience based airplay charts until 1993 if I recall correctly.
December 19, 20177 yr I can't find this chart, but the chart from the week before is available to listen to here: Part One / Part Two
December 19, 20177 yr Two versions of the same song (When I Fall In Love) in the top ten, won't happen again until Wonderwall in December 1995 Edited December 19, 20177 yr by fiesta

December 19, 20177 yr Two versions of the same song (When I Fall In Love) in the top ten, won't happen again until Wonderwall in December 1995 Yeh also happened in 2008 with the Hallelujahs!!
December 20, 20177 yr Always On My Mind was such a great #1, one of the few christmas #1s that was actually better than the Pogues would have been... 'We were beaten by two queens and a drum machine'. Yes Pet Shop Boys' Always On My Mind is one of my favorite covers and is excellently produced and makes good use of dramatic orchestral synths (these were used in a lot of HI-NRG synthpop). Anyway the fantastic imo House Arrest by Krush lower down the chart was to become a big hit in the New Year, and elsewhere in the world of dance, sadly 'Never Can Say Goodbye' was the last big hit for The Communards', although I suppose by this stage Hi-NRG had had its day and was passing out of style in favour of house. Edited December 20, 20177 yr by ❄The Snow.
December 20, 20177 yr What's the actual difference between Hi NRG and house? The former was breaking through in late 1983/84!!
December 20, 20177 yr What's the actual difference between Hi NRG and house? The former was breaking through in late 1983/84!! The main difference in styles between Never Can Say Goodbye by The Communards (a Hi-NRG track) and The Only Way is Up by Yazz and The Plastic Population (a house track) is the repetitive bassline in the background in 'The Only Way Is Up' which makes it acid house. Likewise on the sampling end of the spectrum the difference in style between Paul Hardcastle - Just For Money and Krush-House arrest (which do sound a similar sort style at first) is the faster hi-hat (or cymbal- like) beat in the background to 'House Arrest' which gives it a bit more pace and beat. House basically has to contain the pacey beat that Hi-NRG had plus a repetitive bassline or other played rhythm to be called house. Edited December 20, 20177 yr by ❄The Snow.
December 21, 20177 yr I would still call Hi-NRG a type of dance music though ratehr than pop as some may see it, even some of Depeche Mode's industrial genre stuff like 'Master and Servant' I would say was dance! I have made a whole Spotify playlist of songs that I would consider (at least partly) 80s electronic dance btw: https://open.spotify.com/user/21hzkeo3eklmu...cX6Nm6MDnjsklJg Btw, Steve201, where did you copy and paste your chart from? I was going to try and do a few Christmas chart analyses' for dan's thread now he has abandoned it mostly? But the OCC archives don't paste well. Edited December 21, 20177 yr by ❄The Snow.
December 21, 20177 yr What would you call stuff like Human League then? It was electro-pop/new romantic - would you call it dance too? I haven't done an xmas chart on here in 5 years as Dasher took over the countdowns. I mainly got them from Everyhit.com (which isn't totally accurate) or I suppose from OCC!
December 22, 20177 yr What would you call stuff like Human League then? It was electro-pop/new romantic - would you call it dance too? The danciest Human League song is 'Being Boiled' I think, especially when the beat properly gets going, it does remind me a bit of the style of the instrumental of 1988 acid house song 'Beat Dis' by Bomb the Bass but not quite as much of a beat as that. 'Don't You Want Me' is the least dancey of the Don't You Want Me/Tainted Love/Don't Go/Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These group of upbeat early 80s synthpop songs for me. A lot of the 80s upbeat synthpop songs do sound at least if not more dancey to me than modern future bass songs like 'Silence' by marshmello and Khalid or Martin Garrix ft Bebe Rexha - In the Name Of Love which are deemed dance now! :o
