October 22, 200618 yr ARIA Chartifacts from ARIA.com For the second time this year, a No.1 song has stayed on top of the charts for eight weeks. Sandi Thom retains the No.1 single in Australia for an eighth consecutive week, equalling Rihanna's "SOS" for an eight week run. If it stays for another week, it will then equal Shakira's "Hip's Don't Lie", which is the second longest running chart-topper for this decade. The last year that saw two eight week runs at the top of the charts was back in 2001 when there was "Angel" by Shaggy and "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm. The No.1 downloaded track this week (and last week) is the Scissor Sisters' "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", which Nationally moves up to No.2, making Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" fall to No.3 after sitting at No.2 for seven weeks. "Sexyback" also falls off the U.S. Charts this week after seven weeks at No.1 The highest of two new entries this week comes in at No.8. The second single off Evermore's former No.5 album "Real Life" (No.20 this week) is "Light Surrounding You", and this gives them their second Top 10 single, following on from the No.5 single "Running" which is still in the charts at No.39 this week. P.Diddy has the biggest climber on the charts this week as his "Come to Me" single jumps from 23 to 12, due in part to heavy downloads this week. The second new entry is the No.1 single in the UK this week. New Jersey's My Chemical Romance took their name from the cult description of Irvine Welsh's novels. "Welcome to the Black Parade" is their first Top 50 appearance in Australia, although they have made the Top 100 in 2005 with the tracks "I'm Not Okay (I Promise) and "Helena". This epic new track is taken from their forthcoming album 'The Black Parade' which is out in Australia on October 28th. The 537th No.1 album in Australia debuts at the top of the Album Charts this week, and it's from a group who have already hit No.1 twice in the past 11 months. Human Nature's album "Reach Out: The Motown Record" first hit the No.1 spot back on December 19th, 2005, and did so again during the Mother's Day period of May 2006. Now their second collection of Motown covers debuts at the top of the Album Charts. The last artist to hit the No.1 spot twice in the same year was Delta Goodrem back in 2004, when in January of the year she spent her last two weeks at No.1 with her debut album "Innocent Eyes", and then later that year in November she made it to the top of the charts with her sophmore release "Mistaken Identity". But they are the first Australian group to do so this decade, and only the fourth Australian act in the 46 years of Oz Charts. The first to do so was Skyhooks in 1975 when their albums "Living in the 70's" was later followed by "Ego is Not a Dirty Word". And then Jimmy Barnes did it in 1988, when his album "Freight Train Hearts" was No.1 for the first three weeks of the year, and then in late November he was at No.1 again with the "Barnestorming" album for another 3 weeks. "Dancing in the Streets-The Songs of Motown 2" achieves Platinum status in it's first week, the original recently hitting five times Platinum and currently at No.43 on the charts. It becomes their third No.1 album, their first being the 1999 album "Counting Down", (which was not a covers album of Countdown hits!!). The last album to hit No.1 with 'Dancing' in it's title was back in 1988, the Soundtrack to "Dirty Dancing" which stayed at No.1 for 8 weeks. There have been no other 'Streets', but there have been 'Street' albums, including Dire Straits "On Every Street" (Sept 1991), "52nd Street" by Billy Joel (Dec, 1978) and the last street was "Vulture Street" by Powderfinger back in July 2003. "Dancing in the Streets-The Songs of Motown 2" is the 120th Australian album to reach the No.1 spot in the past 46 years, and the 255th by a Group, whilst it's the 25th album of 2006, whereas the same time last year we were achieving our 18th album of the year when Shannon Noll's "Shine" was debuting at No.1. The second highest new entry comes in at No.9 this week. Two years and two weeks ago Perth's Little Birdy debuted with the debut album "BigBigLove" at No.5, and now this week they take their second album "Hollywood" into the charts at No.9. This new album contains the recent No.18 single "Come On, Come On". Ronan Keating was in the country this week on a promotional tour, and this has helped bring his July 2006 album "Bring You Home" back into the charts at No.13. It originally debuted and peaked at No.6. Third new entry to the album charts comes in at No.17. It Rod Stewart's "Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time" which is the fifth in his series of covers albums. This album is actually early compared to the previous four, as they ALL debuted on the charts during the first week of November. Previously there was... 2002 - It Had to Be You...The Great American Songbook 2003 - As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook II 2004 - Stardust...The Great American Songbook III 2005 - Thanks for the Memory...The Great American Songbook IV Also in early 2005, the first three albums were released as a boxset, and the first three albums all reached the Top 10, whilst the fourth and the boxset reached the Top 20. The sixth album for Australia's Frenzel Rhomb comes in at No.34, "Forever Malcolm Young", and right behind them at No.35 is "Thornography" by Cradle of Filth.
