There is some notable action in that regard though, as the last week burst outstrips any sort of Christmas chaos in recent years, so Mariah Carey gets all the way to #6, the first time she's been back in the top 10 since the song's original 1994 chart run. Wham! are also on a big boost up at #11, and most of the other Christmas songs that might have charted (Buble, Lennon, Band Aid etc) haven't been let on the chart. The one exception is Australia's only major Christmas canon addition (though really it's more of a December 21st song), Paul Kelly's "How To Make Gravy", originally released 20 years ago and now charting for the first time, no doubt buoyed by what has been a very successful year for Australia's premier songwriter. The most noteworthy thing on the album chart is the anti-Christmas affair, or that should be anti-"Christmas", as Michael Buble's album is stuck at #4, having gone no higher than #3 which is its worst performance on record. Even "Havana" is still #2 which means that if not for its few lucky weeks at #1, it would be tying the record for most weeks at #2. It should slide next week as Post Malone has been in the country and "I Fall Apart" is getting big digital & streaming boosts which should send it to a new peak of #2. Otherwise most of this week's chart is just resetting to just before Christmas set in. The only news to the top 50 is the influx of "The Greatest Show" and also Camelphat & Elderbrook's "Cola" getting a belated top 50 entry. The big new tracks from Bruno Mars, Liam Payne, Justin Timberlake & Kendrick Lamar aren't really lighting up the chart yet either, so the top of the chart doesn't look to be changing soon. That is however not true on the album chart, where The Greatest Showman soundtrack takes the top spot with a huge boost. Pitch Perfect 3's soundtrack also does quite well this week. All else to mention is that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released their 5th album for the year right on December 31st, and unlike the previous one which was released unconventionally and didn't chart, this new one has no problem giving them yet another top 10 entry, which is a very welcome brand of interest alongside a pretty dull top 10. Even though this week's chart takes sales from December 29th to January 4th, for some reason enough people bought Michael Buble's album to keep it as high as #12. It also won't next week because Australia is always so slow to jump aboard the hype on new streaming hits, which is to say that Drake will likely debut in or around the top 10, but won't contend for the top spot until the week after. In what was a very close battle from #9-#11, we have two new entrants in the top 10 this week, with Bruno Mars helping Cardi B to her first ever top 10 hit, and "This Is Me" making a surprising landing next to it. Troye Sivan comes close to instantly scoring the highest charting Australian song in ages with "My My My!" debuting at #14, while months of Spotify playlist feeding has finally pushed Angus & Julia Stone's "Chateau" into the top 50, a week ahead of triple j's Hottest 100 where it looks a strong chance at a top 10 finish.

Reasonably busy week for top 50 entries here, with Rudimental powering ahead with their kind of bland "These Days". "Sun Comes Up" was a huge airplay hit that never caught on in streaming so this is their first top 50 single since "Lay It All On Me" in 2015. Dua Lipa scores her 5th top 50 hit with "IDGAF" which looks likely to keep up her run of all of those going top 20. We also keep up the Australian quota with 4 of the 46-50 tracks being Australian, including new entries from Kylie Minogue & Keith Urban which probably will not last very long. Things could pick up next week in reaction to triple j's Hottest 100, which may propel Gang Of Youths & Hayden James into the top 50, while the #1 track "HUMBLE." should be back in the top 20. Most noteworthy for albums this week is Fall Out Boy scoring their 5th top 10 album, still yet to reach the top spot. Their closest was 2013's "Save Rock And Roll" which reached #2, blocked by a new Michael Buble album.

Drake gets his 2nd #1 with "God's Plan" thanks to massive streams as he's only #10 on digital tracks. There are also 4 new tracks to the top 10. All from artists that have been there before, excluding featured artists Cardi B & Dan Caplen. Notably Pnau's "Go Bang" is the first Australian song to go top 10 since...Pnau's "Chameleon" which exited the top 10 nearly a year ago. Just like last year, it reached such heights thanks to a high placing on triple j's Hottest 100 countdown from last week. Said countdown's #1 track "HUMBLE." returns to the top 20, while the runner up track "Let Me Down Easy" enters the chart for the first time ever at #49. Gang Of Youths also see a huge gain on the album chart charging all the way up to #4, while Machine Head amazingly get their 3rd consecutive #10 album, although this is potentially misleading, because for no reason, Migos haven't had their streams counted for "Culture II", so who knows how much higher they should be.

February 7, 20187 yr Author Australia tends to be a bit slow on streaming hits compared to the UK, partly because we're just lethargic like that, and partly because the top 50 playlist doesn't get updated until the end of the next day (because of timezones), so it can sometimes take 2-3 days for the top 50 effect to show up.
February 8, 20187 yr I imagine These Days will be #1 in a week or two then, it’s growing on Spotify still and is way ahead of Drake on iTunes (God’s Plan down to #14, These Days at #1). Drake is doing just under double These Days’ streams, but like I said it is catching up :P What a wonderful time for Australia’s strange adoration of Macklemore :lol: (That said, Jess Glynne is fairly big too although not like in the UK, and Rudimental have picked up steam after opening for Ed Sheeran in 2015 despite Sun Comes Up flopping)

Drake gets a 2nd week at #1 with no signs of slowing down. Rudimental look to score their highest charting single ever with "These Days" for some reason, which is now up to #4, and may move to #2 next week but lacks the streaming power to get further. Black Panther opened in Australia this week and the full soundtrack is also now out, so we should see "All The Stars" shoot into the top 10 with "Pray For Me" not far behind. Meanwhile Justin Timberlake gets his highest peak from his new album with "Say Something" up to #24, which segues to me saying that he's missed the #1 spot that he has hit twice in the past. In the world of making improvements on chart positions, local band DZ Deathrays get their first top 10 album at #4. Even the original Australian Idol runner up Shannon Noll improves slightly on the debut of his last album (7.5 years ago) and gets his 6th top 10 album. Next week outside of the further soundtrack explosion, The Wombats & Hockey Dad will be looking for strong debuts for their latest albums.

February 16, 20187 yr Author From what I remember, the result was quite close, so that's partly to do with it, but it also ebbed and flowed. Growing up in the mid '00s it seemed pretty clear that Shannon was doing much better than Guy (and it tended to become the case that the runner up did better) until Guy scored a #1 hit in 2009 (followed by several more) and Shannon went on to never have a top 40 hit after that. There's probably also the unfortunate implications where Shannon is seen as a true blue Aussie bloke, while Guy is the dorky former church singer that constantly sings unconvincing love/club jams. I am not saying that I endorse it if any of his Google alert using fans come across this, but the psyche is probably there. Bogan Australian social media is a terrible thing that no one should have to see.
