August 2, 20186 yr Lovely's chart run is so weird "32-34-21-13-13-13-11-5-13-15-21-20". It's time at #5 wasn't even boosted with the 13RW season either Do you think George Ezra will be Top 50 next week?
August 2, 20186 yr Author I think Billie just got really lucky that week with the margins, similar to how Anne-Marie just climbed to #4 for seemingly no reason one week. Although in saying that she was unlucky not to hit the top 10 sooner. And yeah Shotgun should definitely make it this week.
August 2, 20186 yr What are the reasons for chart exclusion anything wrong in Australia? Probably just general incompetence honestly. But hey we sort-of banned plastic bags

Indeed, margins are slipping rather rapidly but it'll be a question of who is there to take the fall. Dean Lewis is a possibility as he moves up to #2 but "eastside" is also making big moves on streaming and just needs sales to match it to become a serious threat. Elsewhere in the top 10, DJ Khaled scores his 3rd top 10 hit, Justin Bieber's 16th, Chance The Rapper's 3rd & Quavo's 3rd as "No Brainer" comes crashing in at #6. ARIA continue to cover their ears and eyes regarding Tyga but rest assured(?) we have still managed to find place for a different individual known for very disagreeable actions with minors as 6ix9ine's first ever charting entry becomes his first top 10 hit as well. It's also Nicki Minaj's 12th top 10 hit, and first since "Side To Side" about 2 years ago. Zedd gets another top 50 hit with "Happy Now" assumably thanks to a lot of good will from streaming services for "The Middle" because it is getting the majority of its action from playlist placements. George Ezra also maintains a perfect record of top 40 hits as he scores his third with "Shotgun" underneath the very cold winter that we're going through. Lower down we also have Demi Lovato's "Sober" re-entering due to unfortunate circumstances. Next week's focus will be on Travis Scott's "ASTROWORLD" and finding out exactly how many songs ARIA will let on the chart. Travis Scott is infamous (to me) because of the sheer volume of songs of his that have been left off the chart for no reason, including big hits like "goosebumps", "Love Galore" and "Sky Walker". My understanding is that "SICKO MODE", "STARGAZING" and "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" should chart but I wouldn't be surprised if that's it. There's not much happening on the album chart as the "Mamma Mia" soundtrack gets a 2nd week at the top. Celine Dion's compilation is doing quite well as it soars to #4, ahead of any of this week's new entries. The highest of which is yet another local country artist named Adam, this time Adam Harvey who scores this week's only top 10 debut, and his 5th overall. Following him is another local artist, the often quite good electronic artist Golden Features and his first album in at #11. Next week's top spot will be a battle of whether or not "Mamma Mia" can hold off a trepidatious treat of new tracks from two tremendously different troupes. Travis Scott will hope to have stroked enough cacti in the night time, but perhaps you can count on local rock act Trophy Eyes for the upset. Both artists have so far scored one top 10 album each.

It is looking like it will be the last week though, which is bad news for people who put extremely low effort in making subheadings for threads. Partially because people who still use iTunes are geniuses who are big fans of DJ Magik's oeuvre, but also because the playlists have done their usual job of sweeping Drake songs under the rug after about a month. "eastside" is actually #1 on Spotify now but that's largely due to a vertical video so it will be local bloke Dean Lewis 'mate'-ing himself to #1 after 2 weeks at #2. It's not all ominous news for Drake though, because he scores another top 10 hit this week on Travis Scott's "SICKO MODE", which is fortunate enough to land at #7 when it's #7 on streaming and nowhere in the top 40 digitally. Travis is also fortunate to score an additional top 10 hit with "STARGAZING" sneaking through at #10. "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" also debuts lower down as predicted, and has been certified platinum in the process. Everything else on the album except maybe "COFFEE BEAN" should have made the top 100, which would have rid us of Imagine Dragons, Lil Dicky, James Arthur & Calum Scott. Back on the topic of artists scoring their first top 10 hit, that may well happen next week for Panic! At The Disco, previously charting as high as #12 with "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", as "High Hopes" looks poised to do so. I would also like to note a new degree of iTunes irrelevance, as last week we had a new iTunes #1 which made top 10 in digital track sales, "We You Me" by local singer/songwriter Lee Coulter (no relation to Ricki-Lee Coulter). With no real streaming presence, the #10 digital hit fails to even reach the top 100. With monster streaming figures that have actually been included in the album chart, Travis Scott easily sails to #1 with his 3rd studio album "ASTROWORLD". He previously snuck into the top 10 2 years ago with "Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight". With Drake's former #1 album holding the #2 slot, it is very reminiscent of 9 weeks ago when we last had two hip hop albums in the top 2, with Kanye West's #1 debut and Post Malone's former #1 at #2 on its 6th week. Notably this week, Post Malone actually manages to overtake Ed Sheeran after falling behind him for a while, which pushes "Divide" to an all new low of #7, which will be a heavy blow to Ed's retirement fund projections I'm sure. Right behind him are Trophy Eyes, whose last album was released pretty late in 2016, so they nearly had the chance to debut twice behind the same Ed Sheeran album. They do however end up at #8 which is exactly the same peak they reached last time. Their bass player follows me on Twitter so I'm sure they're nice people. Next week's album is a bit of a crapshoot since there's no clear favourite. Nicki Minaj might be able to do it which will be a career first for her, but it may be difficult to overcome the usual top 5 stalwarts. Also vying for high debuts are Jason Mraz, and delightful singer/songwriter Gretta Ray.

August 16, 20186 yr Author “"BUTTERFLY EFFECT" also debuts lower down as predicted, and has been certified platinum in the process.“ I wonder if Ariana could be coming for another #1 when her album is released, either way I hope she’ll have a few new entries as a result I'm waiting until ARIA do their monthly certification update to find out if "goosebumps" is also double platinum, despite never reaching the top 100 :P Ariana should be a safe #1 as I don't think she has any competition. She might struggle to get additional entries unless there's an instant smash on there. iTunes tells me the album isn't out until Sunday, which will make it very difficult to accumulate streams in time. When her last album was released, Side To Side snuck in the top 100 for a week long before it was a single.
August 16, 20186 yr ^ I think that just means they'll be releasing it at midnight US time across the world on Friday, if they put Friday as the release date it would automatically become available at midnight local time and it'd leak! It's what I've seen when artists like The Weeknd have done it before.
August 16, 20186 yr Author Ah yeah that sounds about right. Can still be pretty costly. Australia always seems to be a bit slow on streaming new releases compared to similar markets (possibly due to timezones, possibly we're just lazy :P). No Tears Left To Cry could use the boost since it's #54 on Spotify right now. Edited August 16, 20186 yr by Dircadirca

Following his first ever top 10 hit "Fit But You Know It", The Streets has wasted no time with a follow up two months later as "Dry Your Eyes" becomes his first ever...wait something's not right about this. Has it come to this you must wonder, who knows who could come up with a better way of masking my ambivalence & frustration with Mike Skinner references, even ones from when he wasn't famous. Unlike this commentary, a grand don't come for free, though you can acquire even more than that in weekly sales with nice playlist placement, which is part of what precipitated this change on the top. Well that and people's inability to deduce that Drake recorded "In My Feelings", DJ Magik's version of "Kiki, Do You Love Me" was the 36th highest selling download of the week. My personal favourite that pops up on iTunes is "In My Feelings" by Keke, an extraordinary leap in bad judgement. But of interest this week, we see one of those long standing barriers finally broken as Panic! At The Disco finally have a top 10 hit to their name with "High Hopes" moving up to #7. George Ezra will probably have to wait another week to get his 3rd because Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode" has held on at #10, which you can surely attribute to the fact that Drake shouts out famous Australian WNBA player Liz Cambage in his verse, though next week it will probably be out of the top 10 (like a light). However Travis Scott does become a talking point as we return to the perpetual saga of "ARIA Did Something Strange"! Travis only had 3 debuts last week because the rest of the album wasn't allowed on the chart. Now they are allowed on the chart and thus have meaningless artificial peaks that don't correspond to much of anything. This same week ARIA posted about 5 Seconds Of Summer's biggest hits and their peaks on social media, including "Amnesia"'s #7 peak which came about because of pre-order sales carried onto insta-grats. But if you love the rush of excitement that comes from ARIA arbitrarily leaving songs out of the chart, then don't worry, because not only is Tyga's "Taste" still missing, his next single "SWISH" which is also in the Spotify top 50 is missing now as well. Gotta make room for "Shape Of You" in the top 50 I suppose. Billie Eilish & Bazzi both score their 2nd top 50 hits this week (maybe "ocean eyes" could have made it too if it were let on sooner ~) and Labrinth is lucky to score two debuts in the same week. There is a little less to note on the album chart. Drake's inertia returns him to the top spot for a 3rd run with "Scorpion", and 9 of last week's top 10 are still in the top 10 this week (Trophy Eyes fall completely out of the top 100). Making that replacement in the top 10 is Nicki Minaj who has the #1 digital album this week and also her highest ever charting album at #4, previously reaching #5 with "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded". Whether or not the belatedly added "FEFE" is included (or rather excluded for being the highest) in the streaming point allocation is anyone's guess, I'm not sure ARIA even know. Though to highlight how little digital sales are contributing, the lovely Gretta Ray's debut EP comes in at #46 despite being #5 on digital albums. Next week should be a bit busier as we'll likely have Ariana Grande scoring her 3rd #1 album, while Aretha Franklin should score some re-entries, and Human Nature will keep covering oldies, including "I Say A Little Prayer" oddly enough. And so Sally may have to wait a fair bit longer because I see no challengers on the horizon. Benny Blanco finally climbs to #2 which gives Khalid his outright highest charting single to date. There's not much happening at the top end though I will note that "No Brainer" has been #6 for 4 weeks in a row, which is either more or less satanic than it was last week. On the topic of me being awful at predicting things, Ariana Grande! She released her newest album last week and it did very well. So much so that it is now the 4th album ever to have the entire tracklisting hit the ARIA Chart (after "Divide", "ye" & "KIDS SEE GHOSTS"). Yes, even the 38 second intro "raindrops (an angel cried)" has charted, making it the shortest song to ever grace the ARIA Chart, by a margin of roughly 20 seconds. The record was previously held by a club song for the Brisbane Broncos from a few years back. The biggest track for Ariana this week remains as "god is a woman" but fresh debut "breathin" makes quite an impact at #8. It's making good streaming progress so it might be able to maintain this ranking. George Ezra also makes for a 3rd top 10 hit with "Shotgun" now up to #9. The second highest debut is from Calvin Harris & Sam Smith which should continue to climb next week, as should the other top 50 debut from Marshmello & Bastille. Unless I'm forgetting something, I think this is actually the first time Bastille has charted a single since "Of The Night" back in 2013, and it's also good timing for Marshmello because "Silence" and "FRIENDS" both dropped out of the top 100 this week. The last thing to note in the top 50 is that Aretha Franklin passed away, with the news hitting Australian press right at the start of the new sales week, which helps "Respect" sneak back into the top 50 for the first time in roughly 50 years. She also charts "I Say A Little Prayer" (a former top 10 hit) and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman". As a curiosity, the 'modern' version of "Think" for The Blues Brothers film makes a debut to the chart at #100. Evidently Aretha Franklin is fortunate that there aren't any Young Money associated rappers whose names sound like they belong to the panthera genus with popular singles right now. I also want to note the other debut this week from Kian, who recently won triple j's 11th annual Unearthed High competition, which looks for uncovering musicians still in high school. Though there have been many successes along the year, he's only the 3rd ever winner to reach the singles chart, following Asta's gold selling single "Dynamite" from a few years back, and also some Japanese Wallpaper tracks. Amusingly though, perhaps the biggest success from the competition has come from a finalist who didn't end up winning, one Jessica Cerro who is now better known as Montaigne. In addition to her own solo success, she also helped out on Hilltop Hoods' multi-platinum smash "1955". Album chart wise, there are no alarms and no surprises as Ariana Grande picks up her 3rd consecutive #1 album with "Sweetener". In doing so she overcomes the plague of re-packaged local boomer nostalgia, as the vocal group Human Nature return with yet another covers album and reach #2. They have previously had 3 #1 albums, one of which actually wasn't covers and was from back when they were marketed more as a boy band. Right behind them we've got more nostalgia courtesy of the artist who I believe has hit #1 on the album chart more than anyone else...the yelling cowboy from the Big Enough video himself, Jimmy Barnes. "Working Class Boy" is a biopic about his early life and assumably is giving everyone a chance to buy the same songs all over again. With the lack of an obvious pick, Aretha Franklin enters the chart with 8 different albums between #13 & #25, preventing Death Cab For Cutie from reaching the top 50, and also kicking Imagine Dragons' 3rd album out of the top 50 for the first time ever. Next week, as it is an even numbered year, we're due the 4th Amity Affliction #1 album. Edited August 28, 20186 yr by Dircadirca
August 28, 20186 yr Interesting that 'Raindrops' breaks that record, and at 38 seconds long I suppose it would break the record for any place it charts in, except for, of course, the UK, where we had a chart (in the top 40 too), but our chart rules meant 'Raindrops' didn't chart here anyway. I'm surprised Drake never did a 30 second intro/interlude just to forever claim that US chart record though (as anything less than 30 seconds long won't get counted for streaming). Also, Dean Lewis says that one of the most defining moments in her life was when she watched Oasis perform at Brixton Academy in London. She states: "It was the (What's the Story) Morning Glory record, so I was about 13 or 14. I had never heard, being in the room, someone sing like that live […] I remember sort of feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hitting me. It was incredible."
