Posted October 22, 200618 yr http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/20...kins/index.html at last, someone with a brain who has the balls to stand up and reveal religious doctrine for what it is.... bollox! theres no use pussyfooting around saying 'people can believe what they want to', as belief doesnt make it the truth. and just look how much evil has been committed by 'believers', as they have 'gods' blessing. its high time we rid ourselves of religion... we dont need 'god', all we need is common sense and the ability to do right over wrong.
October 22, 200618 yr Your post didnt make much sence. i fid a these debates very interesting but you need to be clearer in what you write
October 22, 200618 yr I agree Rob, there is no excuse for religion in this day and age, I would infact like to see religion outlawed be it Christianity, Islam, Catholic, even my own Jewish religion, religion has killed more people globally than anything over the centuries probably be it the spread of AIDS due to a series of ****wit popes and their contraception rules, religious crusades of christians and muslims and so on

October 23, 200618 yr I saw a documentary a couple of years back by this guy, he's got a lot of eminently sensible things to say and he as a very valid point in many things... I really dont like it when politicians start using phrases such as "I believe...", and, maybe I'm wrong but I'm starting to notice that they use this phrase a lot more than they used to... What's wrong with saying "I think..."? (it was good enough for Descartes... Could you imagine the difference in tone and meaning if he had said "I believe, therefore I am.." instead of "I think, therefore I am..."). When you say something like "I believe..." then it's pretty loaded IMO, Tony Blair in particular seems to think he's some sort of 'Messianic' figure, his recent speech at the Labour Conference was particularly toe-curling....
October 23, 200618 yr Blaming religion for all the wars and disasters of history is like blaming science for the atomic bomb and all the weapons. I don´t see a point. There are people who kill because of the football team they support (it happens often in my country), people who kill for money, oil, and even people who kill because they think people from other religion/no religion do not deserve to live... And most usually, people who kill for money or power but claim to be killing because of God, just to justify it in front of the poor and ignorant... Science develops every day, and along with cure to disieses and new forms of energy, it develops every day a new kind of weapon or a new type of substance to cause depence and destroy lives... it makes no sense. Science itself doesn´t have moral values. It´s an instrument in our hands, which we can use for the good or for the bad, and it´s stupid to think science will be a "substitute" for other things, science only develops stuff, but does not teach how to use it or why use it. I´m all against religious fundamentalism, but going against everything that is about religion, or say that there is no "excuse" to have a religion (as if this was a fault?), or call someone an "ignorant bigot" just because he believes/preaches a religion is a type of fundamentalism too. Einstein also didn´t believe in God, but he didn´t need to go all against anything that is related to religion just to prove himself as a genius. It would be stupid for such a famous and charismatic person to go on and take away the only hope of millions of people. There are millions of people in this world who never received enough education to understand evolution or the big bang, many who probably even heard about this stuff and can´t even read... These people don´t have any hope on their state, on science (which they don´t know/understand), politics, etc, and they are all marginalized. At least once in a week they can go to a place where they feel important, where they are not ignorant, uneducated and poor, but just feel like equal human beings for 1 hour... Or even rich people, who despite having much money, are in fact miserable, who take this weekly hour to center their lives on something other then achieving more money/sucess/fame.
October 23, 200618 yr JanetJacksonsNipple... don't you think that hour each week would be better doing some GOOD... maybe some charity work, helping out in a refuge, visiting the elderly maybe, rather than sitting in a church listening to how wonderful their imaginary friend is, then being asked to pay for the privelige?
October 23, 200618 yr Author richard dawkins main worry is that religion is preaching ancient doctrine as 'the truth', and its totally ignoring science. science has proved that many things religion preaches as the truth is nonsense. the main thing about science is that its evolving, re-assessing, adapting constantly as new discoveries are made. religion is stuck in dark age doctrine, we have come along way in 2k years!!! i believe that all religious doctrine is bollox, i dont think for 1 second that any type/style of religion is anywhere near the truth... the 'truth' only exists inside the heads of 'believers'who for some inexplicable reason wants to close their minds and accept this garbage as fact.

True, but then how many of these people would stop going to church or mosque and do charity work? How many of the atheist do that? Shouldn´t we stop watching movies or listening to music to have more time to do charity? In fact, many churches are envolved in social and charity work... It´s just that you don´t see that on newspapers, articles about paedophile priests seem to entertain people better.

You seem to think all religious people are just ignorant people who think the world was actually built in 6 days by some old men with white hair, and then he just picked some dust and made a white blue-eyed Adam. This is just a minority. Most people are inclined to believe today that the universe came from a big explosion... which is a theory first proposed by a Catholic priest, what an irony. We´re lead to believe in that because people more intelligent then us have said so, even tough 99,9% of the people in the universe can´t properly understand how it happened. Ain´t it funny that one of these "more inteligent" people to whom we have delegated our opinions was a Catholic priest? And he didn´t thought for a second leaving his religion?

This is just a minority. Unfortunately it seems to be this 'minority' of crackpots and nutters who have the ear of the current President of the US and want to go around teaching 'creationism' in schools instead of the hard, empirical scientific facts as well as stopping stem cell research on incredibly dubious 'moral grounds'.... The same bunch of idiots who go on about accelerating the 'end of days' and 'the rapture'.....
October 23, 200618 yr talking of stem cell research - isn't it ironic that when this reseach was in its relative infancy and desperate funding was needed in the 80s.... a very vocal and deeply opposed Ronald Reagan, ole Bible-bashing gun-totin' creationism cowboy Ronald Reagan, turned down the vital funds needed for further breakthrough research, thus setting the stem cell research back years and nipping exciting advancements in the bud. The same Ronald Reagan who, just 10 years later, would be virtually begging for this funding to be given to the steam cell researchers to aid his fight against Alzheimers..... the same Ronald Reagan whose wife Nancy became one of the most vocal supporters of this research in the 90s. Funny old world, isn't it?
October 24, 200618 yr The anti-stem cell camp is an utter JOKE. a TINY group of religious nutcases. The fact that Bush has given legitimacy to this group is LUDACROUS.

Funny old world, isn't it? Poetic justice I would say.... I dont normally wish something as dreadful as Alzheimers on someone, but if anyone deserved it, Ronnie did..... <_< Hopefully history will repeat itself with Dubya.... Not that he has much of a mind to lose anyway....
October 24, 200618 yr The anti-stem cell camp is an utter JOKE. a TINY group of religious nutcases. The fact that Bush has given legitimacy to this group is LUDACROUS. And scary Consie.... Bear in mind that these nutters actually believe in Armageddon, The Rapture, The 'end of days' etc, etc..... Also bear in mind that Dubya has his finger on the nuclear button....

Also bear in mind that Dubya has his finger on the nuclear button.... and this is the main point, where any religion stops being a 'personal' relationship with their 'god' but becomes something that effects everyone, and with it being bonkers then people with common sense and rational thinking need to make a stand against these dangerous people. as more and more people are believing their religious books as ABSOLUTE TRUTH, the world is becoming a very unstable place.... richard dawkins is very elequant in his putting down of these stupid belief systems. belief is dangerous, belief is flawed, belief just isnt the truth and belief will be the undoing of the human race.

Has to be said though, Dawkins does tend to focus mainly on Christianity, although I can partly understand that, Christianity is the tradition in which he's been brought up so that's what he knows; I'd like to see him criticise other religions a bit more though...

He wouldn´t have courage. Jews are untouchable, and Muslisms would explode him if he says a bad word about their religion.
