We have legend Bruno Brookes returning to the studio tonight joined by the lovely Jackie Brambles on only her second outing.

We start with the wonderful Danny Wilson performing live in the studio. Danny is best known for big hit Marys Prayer from last year. Some lovely use of white gloves in this performance. This was the first single from the bands (yes Danny Wilson is a band not a person) second album 'Bebop Moptop'.

Next up we have the video for the first Bette Midler song to chart and it was rising up the hit parade due to its feature in the movie 'Beeches'. Another video now at 22 by De La Soul, great band and great to see them having a number of hits in 1989.

The 40-31 had notable new entries for The Cult, The Blow Monkeys and Simply Red. Following this we get our third video in a row with the world exclusive of the new Michael Jackson video for Liberian Girl. I've lost count how many singles we have had off the 'Bad' album now but the campaign began in the summer of 1987 so its two years old by this stage. there's so many famous names in this short video from Dan Ackroyd to Whoopie Goldberg. Ah Jackie clears it up its the SEVENTH single off the album, we will be nearly at the first single off 'Black Or White' soon if he doesn't watch himself.

Next up finally we have a studio performance by a band called 'Waterfront' at 25 with 'Cry'. Its a fairly low tempo affair but a nice change in direction for 1989. They also loved a sax solo back in the 80s. Waterfront were a Welsh pop duo comprising of Phil Cilian and Chris Duffy who left the Cardiff band 'The Official Secrets'. The single peaked in the top 10 of the US Billboard chart, higher than it did in the UK top 40 where it peaked at 17.

We are back to the videos again with the new entry for the new Gloria Estefan single without the Miami Sound Machine at the moment.'Dont Wanna Lose You' is the first single from Glorias debut solo album 'Cuts Both Ways'.

Next up we see a glimpse of Fatboy Slim for the first time as ex-Housemartin Norman Cook makes the top 40 with dance/rap single 'Blame It On The Baseline. He would return to the chart in 1990 with another big dancefloor hit laying the foundations for some genius hits in the next 15 years competing t=with the very different genre from ex-bandmates Beautiful South.

Next up is Kirsty MacColl with her first appearance in the chart since the Christmas classic 'Fairytale of New York' two Christmases ago. She has released her version of The Kinks classic 'Days'. And sounds very good on it to. Ill always have a soft spot for Kirsty though, RIP. I really like the video for this song the way its part cartoon, part real and done in the vintage way. But please can we have more performances in the studio??

My wish didn't come true as we have another video of LA Mix which sounds like nearly every other dance/rap track of this era, roll on when the dance beat of the early 90s takes precedence with Black Box soon enough.

Next up another new video of the new Simply Red single, the classic 'A New Flame'. This should definitely climb into the top 20 soon enough, its a classic. It wouldn't be until the new decade when he would benefit from these great songs by hitting the top spot with plenty of MOR hits which a pretty decent, always had a soft spot for Mick.

Next up its the top 10 selling singles in the country that week. And again Soul to Soul are there for a 4th week at the top spot, great track. That Sonia song looks like the biggest gainer though to take their crown or maybe Bobby Brown or Pet Shop Boys will move up the chart?

To finish the show you've guessed it we get a look at this weeks highest new entry by Bobby Brown straight in at number 8 and gaining due to being used on the new Ghostbusters 2 movie, great film and always loved this track from it even if it is typically 80s. I actually thought the sequel to Ghostbusters was better than the original, maybe that's just me.

But what a strange show 3 studio performances and 10 video showings, is it just harder to get performers in July or is this what its like in the 90s episodes going forward? The studio audience cant have enjoyed it much and I am not a fan.

  • So many songs I like from from 1985 just from looking at the top 10 singles of the year. Tarzan Boy is probably my favourite of the top 10 hits from the year!

Not that I've seen. It's also on at 9am too but it's the same episodes each day. 1999 is due to start imminently

Back To Life, Librarian Girl, Second Summer Of Love, Say No Go, Dont Wanna Lose You, Days, On Our Own, A New Flame all great. Caron Wheeler fresh from Afrodiziak with her co-member the late fab Miss Claudia (Fontaine) who backed every big UK pop star in the 80's and 90's, and was on Top Of The Pops here there and everywhere, both of them backing Beat Surrender (The Jam), Everyday I Write The Book (Costello), and crucially Nelson Mandela (Specials). Pause for breath, tracks by Howard Jones, sam Brown, Aswad, maxi Priest, Japan, Gillan, Aztrec Camera. breathe again, and Miss Claudia went on to EMF, Hothouse Flowers, Neneh Cherry, Beatmasters, Pink Floyd, Robbie Williams, and Madness, Heaven 17, Claudia Brucken, Tim Finn, Squeeze, Texas, Joe Cocker, Paul Weller and Marilyn. Marilyn is hoping to get one of her final performances released, on the ballad, a great track called Breathe.

Gary is by himself in the studio tonight so he gets the help of some studio audience members to present the London Boys performing their top 3 hit 'London Nights' for the second time this month. Especially like the chorus to this, it's quite infectious!

Next up the first video of the night for Eartha Kitt and a welcome return to the top 40 for Bronski Beat for the first time since 'Cmon Cmon' charted at number 20 in March 1986. Its Kitts first top 40 hit since December 1983 and her third in all which I was shocked to hear. Does any Buzzjacker know anything about this release? There's nothing much online about it even though it was a top 40 hit.

Next up we get a second studio performance from Monie Love which gets the dance floor jumping! Loving the more audience views we are gettin these days!

The 40-31 countdown with new entries from Doug Lazy, Bronski Beat & unfortunately we have that Jive Bunny making his first impression on the uk chart of the year, we would have enough of that wee cute bunny by the end of the year, for me it symbolised how the charts had come to a standstill with the acid house/SAW fodder and needed a change. It did sell bucketload though tbf!

Next up in the studio we have a climber by the Blow Monkeys and the gorgeous Sylvia Tella. This was a single taken off the bands upcoming Singles Collection of the same name. They would also have a second single later in the year with Tella and her introduction as singer showed how the band had went from 'new wave' to dance act by the late 80s.

After the 30-11 countdown we get another viewing of the cool video for Bobby Browns Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack 'On My Own'. I kind of thought they would have cut this as we get a glimpse of the future US president 30 years earlier. Not nice viewing Trump Tower knowing what was to come. We have no such luck though!

Next up another video of the new entry at 36 for Dance Dj Doug Lazy. Love the video for this with all the old film dance scenes.

Yet another video next with the 1989 remix of Rufus and Chaka Khans classic 'Ain't Nobody'. Wonder why they didn't just show the studio performance of jus from a few weeks back. At any rate it's the third showing in one way or another. I'm really starting to notice the lack of studio performance now, think it's just they are trying to fit so many songs in. I guess videos were t seen that much so it was no big deal back then but it's really noticeable now watching.

We have a new number one now after 4 weeks for 'Back To Life' it drops 2 and Sonia reaches the top spot with her first ever single release. Thankfully we get a studio performance but not sure why she has a male singer in white trousers dancing beside her? Looks like the SAW way of doing things just keeps going from strength to strength, think this may be their last number one though after 5 long years of dominance going back to the first number one for Dead Or Alive in 1985.

As Gary introduces Sonia's two sister in the crowd he does a clever link to the final video of the evening from The Cult. Probably one of my favourite discoveries of the repeats, decent metal music!! Edie (Caio Baby) is the second single from the bands fourth album 'Sonic Temple'

Edited by Steve201

I didn't realise he was in it either but of course it's happened before 3 years later when he was in the Home Alone 2 movie this time!

Simon and Mark presenting tonight and we start with The Primitives and pop/punk band lead by a female singer, the lovely Tracy Tracy believe it or not, a bit like Transvision Vamp. I like this band though and this sort of music which seemed to be very big at this point. This was the first single from second album 'Pure' and although wouldn't reach the heights of the wonderful Crash from debut album 'Lovely' it was still a great pp song. The indie scene in the late 1980s was a strange one but would come into its own in a few years.

As Mark says next up is the wonderful Gloria Estefan the Cuban American starlet just got bigger as the 1980s went on, this song well inside the top 10 at number 6.

The charts from 40-31 have new entries by Wendy and Lucy, Paul McCartney, the Stone Roses, Gun, Alice Cooper and The Primitives. Yes you heard right the first chart entry for the Stone Roses but more from them later in the year....

Next up we have the video for the new Inner City single which is thw 4th from the debut album 'Paradise'. This Detroit based techno band were one of the first techno groups to have an album cross into the main stream. This is no 'Good Life' but its not half bad for the 4th single.

Next up we return to the studio for the wonderful single 'Days' by the one and only Kirsty of Fairytale fame, lovely version of this with her lovely Irish tones. This is one of my favourite singles by Ms MacColl.

The breakers make a welcome return this week featuring some of the aforementioned new entries between 31-40 by Paul McCartney with the second single of his new album 'Flowers In The Dirt', Scottish indie band Gun and the first ever mention and chart hit for legendary Madchester band The Stone Roses with the cracking first single from debut album aptly named after the band themselves. This was actually the 3rd single release following releases of 'Elephant Stone in October 1988 and 'Made Of Stone in February 1989.

What's better after 3 videos of breakers to get another video performance, ah well. This time that's made better by the fact its the new Simple Minds single 'Kick It In'. Its the fourth single from thei bands eigth album 'Street Fighting Years'.

We return to the studio finally next for the highest new entry by Bros returning with the first single of their short awaited second album 'The Time'. This high entries in the chart was becoming the norm for hyped big returning pop acts by this stage. This second album only contained the Goss twins as the band lost bassist Craig Logan from the debut album. Unbelievably this would be the brothers last top 5 single in the UK.

Following the second part of the chart countdown we have another showing of the new Simply Red single 'A New Flame', surely this will climb higher than 17, great track my Mick and the guys.

And finally the number 1 for week number 2 is the delightful Liverpudlian Sonia being propelled by the power of the SAW production team, nice pop track. Have to say is that Stock dancing beside her twice her height, looks ridiculous whoever it is.

After that 28 place highest climb by Jive Bunny I think I may skip the next few weeks as I know whats coming for the top spot for the rest of the summer of 89.

We finish with the metal classic and new entry by Alice Cooper with 'Poison', late 80s metal at its best!!

Tonight's show sees Steve returning for the first time in quite a few months alongside relative newbie Jenny Powell. Think there's only a few Wright TOTPs left as he left by 1990, in fact didn't realise he went on this long. He is definitely one of the oldies from the generation with Read/Powell/Bates from the late 70s intake.

We start the show with Jenny introducing Scottish rockers Gun and their new single. There's fireworks going off on the main stage but the sound isn't exactly amazing, its quite hard to hear the lead singer. This single was from the bands debut album 'Taking On The World'.

Next up its a big hit in the US by Martika which enters the UK top 40 this week in 1989. Hold on a minute I've heard this before somewhere? Oh yes it was a UK number 1 for Eminem in 2005 16 years later. Well Marshall sampled it on the track 'Like Toy Soldiers, good to hear the original here, its a fantastic up-tempo ballad.

The 40-31 countdown bring newbies from Aswad, Redhead Kingpin and for the first time in the charts The Lightening Seeds. The 90s were really coming quickly with the Stone Roses first hit last week as well.

Next up we have an actual studio performance from former Beatle Paul McCartney, his first appearance on the tops since 1987 I think. His wife of the time Linda was also in the background playing the keyboard. Quite nice to see a legend like him still happy to appear, I'm sure it was quite the coup though maybe went against the producers trying to make the show young and hip. This is the second single from his eighth studio album 'Flowers In The Dirt'.

Next up more young and hip performers with as Steve calls it a surprise hit for Alice Cooper as we get another viewing of the 'Poison' video. This is an absolute classic, glad it was a surprise hit for him. This was the opening single from his eleventh album 'Trash', one thing it certainly wasn't.

Next we have the new entry at 19 for Transvision Vamp who have been on the show a lot in the last year promoting their singles and getting their breakthrough but for whatever reason they would throw it all away by the end of 1990. Another really good single from them from the album 'Velveteen'.

Following the 30-11 countdown which incidentally includes a first top 40 hit for one Shakespheres Sister (more about them in 1992) we have a live performance for Wendy and Lisa. Quite a funky pop number this. They were originally called 'Girl Bros' due to their similarity to boy 'Bros'. They actually worked with Prince and were part of his Revolution band in the early 80s.

We get the video next for the first top 40 hit by the Lightening Seeds. Jenny thinks they are unknown and deserve a hit, we will get quite a few in the next decade Jen some absolute culturally defining. 'Pure' their first hit single is another lovely piece of indie and one of the bands signature songs. Love this track!

Next up we get the highest new entry which was becoming a regular occurrence for Kyle by this points. Not one of her best known tracks for me but she has some lovely moves on the stage, kind of like the Kylie in the future videos we know. You got to love the TOTP special effects in the performance.

And we get a new number 1 with Jive Bunny jumping up to the top spot. You can see Steve Wrights face as this is introduced, he is not impressed. How on earth does this become such a big thing for like 3-4 single releases in 1989-90? I don't get it at all....Jive Bunny was Doncaster DJ Les Hemstock and his mixes were for Music Factory owned Mastermix DJ service. It was developed as a single by John and Andrew Pickles.

We end with a startling view of Steve Wrights very short shorts and the video for the debut release by Shakespheres Sister so looks like we wont have to wait until 1992 for some coverage of them including the former Bananarama star Siobhan Fahy. She left as she couldn't stand the SAW production. She is joined here by co-singer Marcella Detriot. This was the debut single of the debut album 'Sacred Heart'.

Edited by Steve201

Toy Soldiers and Pure are both great songs. Lightning Seeds were like Texas in that they had one big hit in 1989 and then had to wait a few more years for their next top 40 single and yes,it was good to see Paul McCartney turning up in the studio.

Some great stuff in that episode.

Jive Bunny? Same way Little Jimmy Osmond, Bob The Builder, Mr Blobby all topped the charts - the power of nagging kids on parents to buy them it :D

That doesn't happen anymore because kids all have free access to Youtube, Alexa etc and novelty songs dont get put on streaming playlists by companies petrified passive listeners will turn it off

Last time it happened was Peter Kays All Star Band I think in 2009!

The Christmas one gets to number one in 89 as well I think, made Slade and Wizzard even bigger than they were by this stage. Set them up to dominate 90s Xmas too until East 17, Spice Girls & Mariah entered the fray!

We start the show with Big Fun performing the Jackson 5 classic 'Blame It On the Boogie'. Cant say I'm a huge fan of this version, very of its time. Three guys dancing on the stage with a cheesy SAW style dance beat, bit too Europop for me, it was August though so maybe that's why it caught on. Having checked out the band it turns out it wasn't SAW sounding they were part of the producers roster. They consisted of Phil Creswick, Mark Gillespie and Jason Herbert. They only really lasted one album 'A Pocketful Of Dreams' when the hits began to dry up but they did manage 2 top 10 singles and a top 10 album.

Next we have the video of the new single by Lisa Stansfield. This is her first solo release and although its a song I have heard before its not the hugeness of the follow up in a few months. It would comfortably be a top 20 hit for her though.

Following the 40-31 countdown and new entries for Neneh Cherry and Fuzzbox we have a performance by Dogs D'Amour and 'Satellite Kid'. The lead singer seems to have a vocal problem when singing. Seems its a slow metal track, not actually that bad. Turns out they are an English Glam Rock band. This single was from a EP the band released called 'A Graveyard of Empty Bottles and was their highest charting release along with this single which eventually hit the top 30. They seemed to have released 10 singles which charted in the top 100 between 1988-1993 only one other one hit the top 40 'Victims Of Sucess' in 1990.

Next up another video for the current dance/hip hop song on the rise from Readhead Kingpin. They are a American hip hop/new jack swing group. This would be their highest charting single and best known track, cant say Ive ever heard it. This would be a top 20 single from the album 'A Shade Of Red'. The song featured on the soundtrack of Wes Cravens horror film 'The People under The Stairs.

Following its climb into the top 20 we have a studio performance of the great new single from newly formed Shakespheres Sister. Siobhan Fahy looks particularly lovely back in the studio. Was she the most talented Rama? That's for everyone to have their say!

Following the 30-11 countdown we have Aswad in the studio performaing their new single 'On and On'. This song was a cover of the Stephen Bishop 1977 hit of the same name. Love how last years huge number one has extended the chart career of this band, well deserved success for the Raggae band who had been going since the early 70s.

Next up the video of the new Beatmasters single with Betty Boo, vaguely remember watching this video as a young chuld watching TOTP. Another fairly typical late 80s house/hip hop track or hip house as they call it. The Betty Boo feature isn't the cartoon character of the same name its actually Alison Clarkson. She would also go onto have a decent solo chart career in the ealry 1990s.

So the big performer this week is left for Liza Minnelli with her new single. Liza is as famous as they come - shes an American actress and singer best known for her academy award winning performance in the 1972 movie 'Cabaret'. In 1989 she was returning to music with this single and collaborating with the Pet SHop Boys on their album 'Results'. And I did niot know she was Judy Garlands daughter, you learn something new every day doing these TOTP write ups.

The top 10 countdown to the number one next and its a second week for Jive Bunny and his mixmaster friends. There are bug upward moves for Martika and Alice Cooper! As everyone knows Im not a fan and we pretty much have terrible number ones from now until 'Nothing Compares To You' in 1990 interrupted by Black Box and Lisa Stansfield.

We finish with the video for the number 3 hit Lil Louis 'French Kiss', was waiting for this to be played as knew it was a good one and was surprised TOTP hadn't touched it yet as it climbed to the top 3. Lil Louis was also known as Marvin Burns who was a Chicago born house DJ and producer. This dance classic was originally an instrumental. This song should really be the number one here, its a song that's still looked at as a classic now, for once the uk charts didn't get the right results but this may be because the chart was increasingly becoming about promo and being a high new entry more than ever before.

Edited by Steve201

The singer in Dogs d'Amour looks a bit like Noel Fielding in that picture. They are not a group I remember.

If you go five minutes into the clip of 'French Kiss' you will find out why TOTP haven't shown it up to now. With it now being in the top 3,they had to show the bit at the start at least.

'Losing My Mind' by Liza Minnelli was the highlight from that edition.

Yes was thinking who he looked like, spitting image of Fielding!

We start the show with what will become the biggest single of 1989 Italian DJ Black Box and 'Ride On Time'. As is well known is that this version used a vocal sample from the 1980 single 'Love Sensation' by Loleatta Holloway which had not been cleared and after the copywriters took legal action the single had to be reissued with vocal by Heather Small who was to be the lead singer of the Band M People in the mid-90s. The single was written and produced by Italian team Groove Groove Melody comprising Daniele Davoli, Mirko Limoni and Valerio Semplici. Apparently Davoli believed Holloway had passed away and had erroneously read that sampling less than two seconds of a track without permission was legal. Davoli believed the lyric to be 'Ride On Time'in the Halloway track due to his poor English when in fact it was originally 'Right on Time'. So this performance on TOTP is not the original singer and is also mimed of course. Great track though and it sounds a lot like we have reached the time when dance music was entering the modern era where the big tracks sound just like the songs we hear still today, indeed this track fits in well on the weekend dance warm ups still even if it is 30 years old.

Up next as Nicky said its Jodie Watley who even though the first Batman was only out in the summer of 89 and Prince had a big single in the charts for it apparently Jodie is set to play Catwoman in the second instalment, it didn't happen of course as Catwoman didn't come into the fray until the mid 90s sequel and was portrayed by Michelle Pffeiffer. Nice to hear Eirk B & Rakim back in the chart for the first time in 2 years as their style of rap is now mainstream. Even the rap videos are becoming more what we are familiar with these days and in the 90s.

The countdown from 40-31 sees NEs for Then Jerico, Adeva & the Manic MCs. We will surely get a breakers segment this week with the amount of NEs?

Next up in the studio fantastic to see a performance of the wonderful 'Toy Soldiers', now into the top 5, looking like it could go to number 1 in future weeks not quite in hindsight but good to see it eventually topping the chart 16 years later with the Eminem sample. Shes a lovely looking girl Martika as well with her dark features although in this performance she throws her microphone stand behind her, maybe not so nice.

Next another video play of the class new Alice Cooper single 'Poison'. Pity they couldn't get him in the studio, would have been class live.

As I predicted above the many new entries has meant the breakers return with three videos of lower top 40 future hits including a mid tempo Rnb number from Alyson Williams, mid tempo pop/rock from Then Jerico and some house from Starlight.

Next up in the studio is the new single from Fuzzbox and their third hit in a row to be on TOTPs. This is another pop/rock number and they seem to be moving away from the dancey nature of their songs for a more guitar driven style.

Next we have 30-11 countdown with a lot of fallers and the highest new entry from Queen and highest climber from Lisa Stansfield. Next up we have another studio performance with the new single from Neneh Cherry following up Manchild & Buffalo Stance. This is a more upbeat typical pop/dance combo with RnB elements. Not as unique as the previous two aforementioned singles but this will help sell the album 'Raw Like Sushi'.

Next up its the highest new entry from Queen with the third single from the current album 'The Miracle' . Its a pity the band cant or wont come into the studio by this stage but this is another fantastic single from them.

Next up the top 10 selling singles of the week with top 10 entries for Big Fun & Liza Minelli but number 1 for a third week its Jive Bunny and his Mixmasters. For the first time since 1986 we get some scenes of the studio dancing alongside the number 1 viseo, I like that! I think they got rid of that when the professional dancers of Zoo stopped being part of the set.

We are back to the usual finish though as we get the video for the NE by Adeva giving us a warning to end the show.

Tonight we are joined by veteran Mark and newbie Jacki and we start with The Beatmaster live in the studio this time with Betty Boo. This is another upbeat house rap track and sounding more commercial and modern than the previous single, hopefully this performance can push them into the top 10 next week.

Next up and amazingly we have two studio performances in a row, this time from Lisa Stansfield, the rising lady of British pop this year after her feature on the previous Coldcut release. As I said previously its not the mega hit that would come later in the year but this is nice upbeat pop to give her a chance of the top 10 next week, hence the performance. I love her wonderful singing voice.

We have the 40-31 countdown next if Mark and Jakki can find the camera and there's new entries by the Eurythmics, Debbie Gibson & the Fine Young Cannibals. We have an unprecedented third studio performance in a row without a video up 21 places to 19 for Alyson Williams with her second top 40 hit of the year.

And the highest new entry of the week is the sound of the summer called 'Italian House' and its by Starlight. the first video performance too Ill have you know. Flashy video like! Starlight is actually an alias used by Black Box who are set to have a huge number 1 in a few weeks. Cheeky of them to get a second hit under a different name.

Next up we are back in the studio for a performance of the new single 'Sugar Box' by Then Jerico. They aren't a band I remember much so they must have faded in the early 90s before the Brit Pop surge but this is quite nice to listen to. This is the third single from the album 'The Big Area'.

We have the 30-11 countdown before a viewing of the video for second highest new entry by Bon Jovi, not as huge as the previous releases but a metal head banger at any rate. 'Lay Your Hands On Me' is the fourth single from the bands fourth album 'New Jersey' named after the place they are from.

A second video in a row but its another good one by Adeva and 'Warning' climbing into the top 20 and it becomes her third top 40 entry of 1989. This is the third single from her debut album 'Adeva!' which was only released this month in 1989. It was strange inn that she is an American act who did a lot better in the UK mainly due to her house music sound and her album would sell over 300,000 copies here.

After such a promising start we get our third video viewing in a row and its the highest new entry by soon to be Sir Cliff one of the few in 1989 who could enter in the top 10 in week one, bit like the Drake of this chart era. But also very different indeed. This is an upbeat number by Cliff and the video has one of his live performances in front of the thousands of fans in his white trousers. It wouldn't be his final top 10 single of the year either.

There's little movement in the top 10 apart from Cliff new entry and the biggest gainer in there is Black Box who enter the top 3. Also great to see 'Poison' by Alice Cooper up to number 2 to become his highest charting single.Which means for a whole month we have Jive Bunny and those Mastermixers dominating the top seller spot.

We finish proceedings with the fifth video in a row this time the lovely new Donna Summer single, she seemed to have a huge resurgence in the last few years of the 80s. This is the third single from Summers fourteenth studio album 'Another Time Another Place' and by the sound of this single its obviously produced by SAW but maybe that's why she's had a revival in her fortunes because its the most popular sound of the time - fair play I say.

Oh really, didn't know that!

No wonder he was getting high new entries that year. I thought it was following the success of 'Mistletoe & Wine' the previous Christmas. Wonder if Radio 1 and the likes still played him?

Edited by Steve201

It was only this one song that SAW were involved in. The one before it that got to number 2 was his 100th single so that one did really well just because his fans wanted it to get to number 1. I can't remember if he was still being played on Radio 1 at the time. Probably not as much as before.
We all know the chart played him I guess. I can imagine some of the tracks were still cool and melodic enough!

Gary is on presenting duties tonight and he tries to build up how special the final show of the summer is but then goes onto present this god awful group Big Fun with their cheesy SAWesque version of the Jackson 5 classic. This version adds absolutely nothing to the original though it being at number 6 they must have felt they had a chance of number one so came onto give it one last push.

Next up Gary presents the video for the new Debbie Gibson single. They have to sort out the way the camera zooms round the crowd to the presenter when they're on the ground floor level of the studio, just looks ridiculous. 'We Could Be Together' is the fourth and final single from Gibsons second album 'Electric Youth'.

Next Gary decides walking and talking is the best option as he introduces the next video and after last weeks new entry for Bon Jovi of course they had to be followed this week by a new entry for Guns & Roses, it was 1989 after all. I like this heavier sound by Bon Jovi though, more upbeat. Its the third song on the bands debut studio album 'Appetite For Destruction'. The song is a tribute to an infamous brand of cheap Californian wine 'Night Train Express' which was popular with the band during their early days touring.

We have the 40-31 countdown with new entries for Janet Jackson, Tina Turner with arguably her most enduring hit and current radio 2 mainstay Richard Marx.

Next up in the studio we have a second performance of future number 1 Black Box. We all know the story with this one and I'm sure we will see it played quite a few more times over the coming months as it became the biggest selling single of 1989 and rightly so, I love it and still do!

Next up we have the video for the new Tina Turner anthem, The Best. I used to love this anthem but since its been taken over by Rangers fans as their anthem and in course loyalism in general I funnily cant warm to it anyway. Still a fantastic pop song.

Now for the best performance of the night as the Eurythmics return to the TOTP studios for the first time in 3 or 4 years (someone can give me the exact date if possible) with their great new track 'Revival'. They need a revival as this was one of their last hits as a group. I love Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart though absolute legends. They've even got the full backing singers. 'Revival' is the first single from the groups 7th album of the decade 'We Too Are One'. This seen a return to the rock sound.

Next up after the 30-11 countdown is the nice SAW hit by Donna Summer and as Gary states its her 33rd hit from her 14th studio album.

What was I saying about Eurythmics being my favourite performance of the night, next Gary walks along and presents the new single from Tears For Fears. Though some marks lost for not turning up in the studio, maybe next week. Its the highest new entry though at number 9. This is the first single from the bands third album of the same name and their final album as a duo until 2000. This classy video was directed by Jim Blashfield who made the videos 'Good Friends' for Joni Mitchel, 'Leave Me Alone' for Michael Jackson and 'The Boy In The Bubble' for Paul Simon.

We get another studio performance next by Damian and we have to do 'The Time Warp'. This seems like a bit of a novelty record and no surprise its the highest climber. Bound to be top 10 in a few weeks. They have even put some of the unexpecting audience members in the background for the first time in ages to do the moves to this. Its a cover version of the original from the 'Rocky horror Show'.

The top 10 is next with climbers from The Beatmasters, Big Fun and Cliff Richard and for a 5th week its Jive Bunny at the top spot. Don't worry the British public will show next week they have some taste as we get a new chart topper. We finish with the video for Malcolm McLarens current hit 'Somethings Jumpin' as Gary leaves us as the studio audience is about to explode.
